Injury Report - Season 2023

@caesar and others have attested to the hard running in particular that we've been doing over summer. When you train that hard soft tissue injuries can happen. But we'll be fit (when we're fit, if ya folla).

Also when you look at our soft tissue injuries there is a common thread:

Short 27, Broad 29, Castagna 26. Guys who are getting on and have played a lot of footy over the past few years and are at an ever increasing risk of injury.

Pickett is a bit of a different injury type but also older, and without the training years under his belt.

It's not fair to expect our conditioning guys to be able to bend time.

With the hard overlap running with footy in hand we did in the pre-season I expected our ball movement to be like Melbourne, i couldn't believe what i was seeing at Casey so it sapped me a little bit that maybe some clubs are just going to be better at it. Only a practice match but.

In regards to fitness some players have missed extended time and therefore mileage in their legs and absences have left us bereft of ideal match ups in match sim:

Back-line in particular has been disrupted in a place where we need to get some cohesion back.

Graham
Short
Sonzie
Lynch
Marlion
Brown
Bauer
Prestia, (4 weeks), yes he is fit but was unavailable for most of our intra clubs.
Campbell
Colina
Smith
Soldo, (Managed to a fair degree).
Hopper, (managed for a fair bit of pre-season)
Junior, (have noticed he has been managed a bit of late too)
Cumberland started pre-season, pre christmas, with a bang but has had quite a few niggles along the way and has spent some time in re-hab.
Gibcus
Tarrant
Grimes, (out at times).
Broad, (out in late season sessions).

***smile* when I put it down on paper it has given me a reality check o_O yes GPS numbers would be up for those that completed the majority of sessions but many haven't:confused:.

Prestia escapes serious injury

Michael Gleeson
The Age
9 March 2023

Richmond’s talismanic midfielder Dion Prestia has escaped serious injury to his pectoral muscle and is now set to play against Carlton in the blockbuster season-opener, with the Tigers also looking to play a debutant key defender against the Blues.

Sources added that scans revealed barely any damage to the muscle, that Prestia was pain free and is now almost certain to play against the Blues in what is already a sellout match at the MCG.

Grade 1 muscle injuries can expect a full return to function within a week, once symptoms have subsided."

Source Pivotal motion physiotherapy.

If his injury is a grade one then a two week turnaround may be possible but I hope they take a conservative view with his injury if there are any doubts.

From all the hoopla of doom on the injury front. Looks like only Tarrant, Short, and Gibcus will be missing.

Prestia, Graham, Ross, and Pickett are more likely than unlikely to be available.

They have done a ton of work over the preseason and have enough mileage in their legs that won't hinder them from being a few weeks out.

Only Gibcus will take time.
Unfortunately no replacement for match fitness.
They’ll have to build into that

* Albeit all under done

Exactly and that is the key issue we are facing.

There's a great line in Gladiator where Russell Crowe says to his troops 'What we do in life echoes in eternity'. I used to modify it when guys were really hurting in preseason, to what we do now echoes in the season.

That preparation and conditioning is the key, it makes all the difference in your injury resilience and ability to sustain high performance loads week in and week out for a long season.

It's not about being fit enough to play a game, you can give me any healthy body of the right age and they will be fit enough to play an AFL game within a few weeks, that's why kids can be drafted in October and ready to play in the preseason and round 1.

What reciting from a movie. 'll give you real life, not sure if you are into MMA, but Jon Jones hadn't fought for 3 years and just won the heavyweight title UFC at 35
5X5 min rounds gotta be superfit.

Most of our players have played at least 1 game in the preseason., bar Pickett, Gibbo, Taz & Graham.

There's only been one official and 1 unofficial practice game so everyone is in the same boat. As I mentioned to TBR only a few players haven't played being Pickett, Gibbo, Taz & Graham. With the exception of Gibbo and to a lesser extent Taz, Short-term injuries won't hinder them. I've had short-term injuries playing footy and other sports and I was straight back into it. I didn't need games under my belt to get match fitness. Now my wife that's another story plays basketball and she did her Achille's and that took time to heal and get back into it to build her fitness etc

Im hoping that Pickett & Graham are the 2 players coming into the side

B: Grimes - Balta - Broad
HB: Rioli - Miller - Vlastuin
C : Ross - Hopper - McIntosh
HF: Martin - Riewoldt - Bolton
F : M. Rioli - Lynch - Cumberland
R: Nankervis - Taranto - Prestia
Int: Graham - Baker - Cotchin - Ryan
Sub : Sonsie

This is the side i would like to see run out next thursday night
I know most will say we cant play Miller & Ryan but these to provide both cover for Ruck , Defence , Foward lines and we can sub 1 of them out for sonsie after half time to get the extra run if needed
