Best thing you can do is watch the preseason form of the draftees and other guys at the very low end of the pricing range to try to suss out who's going to get a regular game.

Also you need to decide on some lower priced guys (200-350k mark) that you think are under valued, perhaps because they had an injury interrupted year last year, or weren't given a go and have moved to a new club. Monitor the preseason form of a few of these guys, if you haven't been on it, fan footy's a great site for dreamteam and supercoach scores http://www.fanfooty.com.au/.

Obviously you want to have a few stars, and particularly a couple of blokes you can rely on to post consistently high scores, the double points you get from your captain can be the difference between a good score and a great score. From your team I'd rate Daniel Cross your best captain material, I had him from the start of last year until he got injured and he consistently scored between 100-150 (scored 141 against the roos on the weekend too).

On the stars, the way they work out the rise and fall of player values throughout the season means it's extremely hard for a bloke who has a very high start value (eg. Bartel) to maintain their value; blokes like that are almost guaranteed to have a drop in value. I always think it's better to have a mid range player (say Nathan Jones) you're certain will improve (and thus whose value will increase) who you can trade up to a star after say 8 rounds, and if you've chosen your rookies well you'll be able to down grade one of them for another and pocket the cash. That way you'll have a good spread of players and be in a position to make your team stronger as the season progresses.

I have a rule of not picking up 2nd year players, they tend to be overvalued and the 2nd year blues syndrome is too much of a reality for me to consider them. Teams also tend to be more likely to man up on a 2nd year player if he had a good 1st year and that can also lessen his ability to post good scores.

Hope some of this helps.

I've always found that picking one group (mids, backs or forwards) to fill with speculative types while loading the rest of your team with proven guns is a good strategy. You fill your reserves with players who are base price and look like getting plenty of early games (wait til the teams are anounced before round 1 before you pick these) and let them go up in value over 4 or 5 weeks before trading them off to upgrade some of your speculators who will also (hopefully) have gone up in value.

What's making it tough this year is that there doesn't seem to be (from the quick look I've had) any real 'must have' types like Lappin and Adcock last year and Francou and Fraser the year before who were all around base price for one reason or another and basically guaranteed to be amongst the higher scoring players.

That's where you need to look at definitte "cash cows" like our own Simmonds and Coughlan who you know, if fit, will play every game and score well above the average expected by their value. It's doubtful there'll be quite the value provided by Lappin last year, but consistent 70-75 from Cogs will see him being good trade bait by round 6-10.

There are still a number of very good value players this year, it's just not quite as obvious as it has been the last couple of years. Things might have to be a little more speculative this year than last, but closely monitoring the preseason will make things a little clearer than they would otherwise be.

I personally prefer to have an even team, I think it's easier to pick one relatively speculative player per group to play on your ground than an entire group of them. The one player can always be subbed for a rookie if they're not playing well and your rookies are going ok. It's all a matter of personal preference, I don't think there's any real right and wrong in this game, just what you feel comfortable with.

Yeah absolutely. As long as you reach the goal of having basically a team full of guns by about round 14 it doesn't really matter how you get there.

I'm in gents. I invited Terry to join however he declined stating he wont be signing up until 2011. Something about a 'window of opportunity'?

I'm just hoping my punts pay off, they did last year and I finished 370odd overall which I was really pleased with. My aim for this season is to crack the top 100, but my main concern is making sure I've still got some trades left come the last couple of rounds, used my last at about round 20 last season which cost me a spot in the top 100, was in there until round 19 or 20, was shattered to fall out so late.

Was never a realistic chance of winning the whole thing, but you love to think your a chance to compete to the end. Cut my throat with some of my trades last year, problem is you can't be too cautious or you're no chance anyway, gotta take risks to get ahead, just gotta cut out unnecessary early trades (eg dropping Hodge for Kerr which wasn't too bad, but Hodge came good and scored around the same as Kerr anyway).

I think braddles said this already but www.fanfooty.com.au is the go mate. Lappin was huge value last year because of his injuries the year before (they work the prices out on the scores from the year before) and for some reason Adcock's price was unexplainable ridiculously low.

As braddles also said, as long as you think they can play most games and get back to something like their best Simmonds and Cogs are both pretty good value.

No prob. Unlimited trades until the season starts hpt. Think there'll be some full list overhauls before then.
