Hot weather

I hate to complain because generally speaking I love hot weather but without airconditioning the nights are pretty brutal lately. So many hot nights in a row is unMelbourne like.

One would think the general across the board reduction in sleep would have to be effecting productivity.

Maybe Ted saw the writing on the wall.

IMO melbourne summer weather has changed dramatically in the past 10-15 years. when i was growing up, summer weather worked on a cycle (like RfC77 was saying). it would start off in low-mid 20's, then would work it's way up to the 30's over 5-7 days. if the cycle went any longer than a week the temp would rise to the high 30's and occasionally into the 40's. at the end of the cycle we would have a storm and a cool change and the cycle would start over again. this just doesn't happen anymore.

This continuous band of high pressure systems slowly passing over Victoria is totally insane. It's happened all through the last 3-4 months with hardly any cooler days around.

I follow the weather a lot during summers, however, I don't remember many continuous warm nights (20deg+) during summers when I was a kid through the 70s and 80s, but I could be wrong. Even the winters used to be colder than usual as I remember 'shaking' in my bedroom on cold nights with the heater on in the lounge room (I had to run back there to stand next to it all the time).

Nowadays, I can feel more northerly than southerly winds during winter, but who knows.....maybe it's the person's body that changes/ages through time. I'm still a bit ignorant on that 'ozone layer' over Australia story 20+ years ago which probably lead to the regular climate change/global warming debates now.

Bumping this thread in light of what we have ahead of us this week.

MELB: 35-41-39-41-40 with hot nights to boot. Not looking forward to Thursday night when the overnight low is 28 and that will be at 5-6am Friday morning.

ADE: 40-41-43-43-40 all with hot nights.

This is disgusting weather I can say I am not looking forward too, especially the overnight temps.

Good luck to everyone and try and keep cool and drink lots of water and for those who say they love hot weather, enjoy it because I wont be.

i don't have AC in my place as it is naturally cool and i can't justify it for a handful of hot days per year. ceiling fans comfortably do the trick when we have a couple of hot days in a row... but i'm expecting it to be a lot less comfortable after 5 days in a row over 100F. luckily its during the week and i'll be kept cool via the office AC.

Love the hit weather, nurses what sumner is all about. Swimming, barbecues, drinking, relax, sunning...fantastic. Happy to come home to it.

How's everyone handled the heat this week, had the A/C running pretty much non stop, turn it off for even half an hour and the house goes to boiling point, so imagine my joy after keeping the house ok today then to get hit with a blackout for nearly 2 hours, packed up the kids and headed to the shopping centre only to find out that was blacked out as well, just drove around in the air conditioned car too stay cool, cool change Friday night, will be grabbing a chair and a few bevvies and sitting outside enjoying the coolness.

Been down at Lorne Tommo - beautiful beach weather down there ;D

Got back home this arvo and the house was 34 inside! Air con going so nice now, laying low til the cool change tomorrow.

I normally enjoy the warm weather, but last week was just horrendous. Rarely gladder to see a cool change come through.

I've stated my hatred of heatwaves earlier in this thread, and unfortunately, another one arrives next week. :p

Give me that polar vortex anyday........

I'm with you TF, hate the heat, can put up with it every now and then but not day after day and the hot nights are the real killers, last Tuesday night it was still mid 30's at about 3am, I should know because I was still up as I could not sleep.

Looks like this one's gonna last until next Sunday (7 days) with a slight relief on Wed Jan 29.

It's becoming desperately dry with the grass turning yellow again. Hasn't rained consistently since July IIRC.

adds new meaning to "outside 50" . This was last Friday in Melbourne

I've had enough of summer already and we still have February to go, just sick of this heat and we have a run of 6 days of 30+ from Thursday ( 33-31-36-41-36-31 ) even worse for the country folk, and this cool change we have just had has done nothing, swept through in an instant and now there is barely any breeze at all.

Out of the four seasons, this is how I rate them from favourite to least favourite,

1. Winter, because I love the cold.
2. Autumn, because winter is coming.
3. Spring, because the smell of summer is in the air.
4. Summer, the heat, enough said.

And if I hear another Sydneysider say that 35 is a beautiful sunny day I will go up there and drag them down here or to SA to live it.

Rant over for now until sunday when were struggling through 40+ heat again.

Good post Tommo...

I've got a thing for Autumn in Melbs as it's usually clear and fine, stable weather pattern, sunny days but not too hot and cool nights. And some autumn coloured leaf action as well. Winter is OK but drags on too long, Spring is pretty pissweak in Melbs and Summer is good if you are near the beach or a pool, but otherwise meh.

Much the same for me Tommo. Next Monday's gone from 26 to 36 all of a sudden.....WTF is going on here??

The strange thing I've noticed since April last year is that 95% of all nights have been completely idle air (i.e. light wind) which makes it harder for Melburnians to sleep after days like today....especially for the northern suburbs.

I just don't get why, as a city in the south, we continue getting extreme heat in Jan, Feb and March but never extreme cold in June, July and Aug??

I don't like the 18deg+ minimums in Sydney because of humidity, but at least their maximums during summer are consistently near average mid-20s, and not all over the place like ours are.
