Well that was quite a game, certainly a Grand Final for the ages. Truly a great game.
Where do you start?
You start with the first half. Geelong were bloody good. There were good reasons why we couldn't get our game going, Geelong's set up and, even more, their pressure, was elite. They were killing us for good reason, they were playing so well. But one of the signs of a truly great team is the ability to tough it out when the opposition are winning and limit the damage, we did that. A lot of the kicks into our forward 50 went straight to the opposition, but, while frustrating, it was at least in part a result of Geelong pressure. The way to beat Richmond is to stop us playing our own game, but geez is it ever hard to pull that off, even more so for 4 quarters.
Dusty's goal at the end of the second was crucial, just brought the margin back to something more manageable.
At the start of the 3rd you could see our pressure and intensity had lifted. It certainly gave me hope that we could cut back that deficit. Still worried with Vlastuin missing but we were pegging it back. One we got our noses in front and smelt the kill we became unstoppable. That big goal from Menengola in the last was magnificent, big kick from a long way out under a lot of pressure. But we kept kicking more until the result was sealed. I had my daughter on zoom and commented that I preferred 3/4 time last year to this year as we just had our noses in front and it was very much still up for grabs.
Great game, win for the ages.
So many contributors. Thought Houli was quiet then I read here that he did his calf in the first quarter. What a guy, you are a hero Bachar.
Now, a few things about the game.
The incident where Dangerfield knocked out Vlastuin was a dog act pure and simple. Momentum, unavoidable, just one of those things? I call bulls***. He ran into the pack with his elbow cocked and ready to hit. Was he spoiling the ball? I haven't seen a replay but did it not come off his forearm, is that how you spoil a ball? I don't think so. He was leading with his elbow and that was as deliberate as you will see these days. Should be rubbed out but won't even get cited.
Umpiring was a mess. Dangerfield got a free for in the back in the first quarter as he was tackled, I saw at least half a dozen similar incidents in the game where the adjudication was different - inconsistent. Deliberate out of bounds was unrecognisable from the way it was adjudicated 8 days ago. Holding the ball: grossly inconsistent. I know Ablett has been a great player, but that doesn't give his whole team the right to hold on to the ball for ages and not get pinged. Passing the ball to a team mate has been illegal disposal forever. Absolute joke as per usual.
What an era we are building. I really couldn't care less whether the media call this a dynasty, we know the truth, the supporters of all the other clubs know the truth. This is a truly great football team and now let's make sure this is a truly great football club through thick and thin and for decades to come.
Thanks to Benny, Peggy, Dimma, the players, the whole club. We are back, we are the biggest damned AFL club ever, and when Richmond are back we nail multiple flags.
Go Tiges.
