Goal Kicking Probabilities

I know you cannot shoot a basketball accurately (consistently) without follow through and even that "limp wrist" finish is a critical factor. The mechanics of sport might be hard for us to explain on this leanred fourm but the laws of physics apply to hands, feet, clubs and the projection of balls just as much as they do to sending a rocket to the moon.

Follow through is merely a continuation of physical motion after the event, hence the term FOLLOW. It's somewhat different to the amount of work, force, spin etc that is put on the ball while the hand, foot, club is in contact with the ball.
Your rocket travelling to the moon has constant force, thrust applied while the engine is blasting, after that it's just trajectory of established motion.

The best free thrower of all time Ted St Martin with a record 5221 baskets in a row defies that logic. No limp wrist, and certainly not a traditional style of shooting.

Currently the best Ten pin bowler in the world bowls "Two Handed." So whose way is the best? Leave someone to do things their natural way or coach it out of them? That's the dilemma of coaching.

The argument here is one of cause and effect.
The effect of an efficient kicking/throwing/hitting style is good follow through. Follow through is not the cause of an efficient style.

It's literally impossible for the motion of your leg AFTER the ball is no longer contacting it to have any effect on the ball.
But it is fairly improbable that you're contacting the ball well without ending up with a smooth follow through.

Because of the weirdness of human biomechanics, you can sometimes mess with the effect to get the cause though. By picturing and planning for the follow through, you tend to get the initial swing/contact right. You don't need that follow through, but aiming for it shapes you up.

Yup. It is easier to diagnose the problem by looking at the follow through for some reason. And easier for the player to see it. Griff (and sometimes Lids) needs to use a "complete" action when kicking for a set shot. (Did Tony Lockett ever not put a set shot into the third tier?) Lids sometimes kicks of two steps instead of his full wind up. Tends to spray 'em when he does.

Nice one, well explained. I think everyone is on the same page.
