tigersnake said:This is a major shift in thinking. Our astromonical consumption is polluting the earth (i'm not gunna bother arguing about it again here). The only way to address it is to start charging people to pollute, simple. The sky won't fall. People will just think before they consume, ie, waste less. New industries will blossom, a capitalist dream, old lazy dirty ones will fade away. Australia doing it early will just put us ahead of the game.
What this is is another major shift in thinking. Just like ending slavery, equality for women, acknowleging that smoking kills you. etc. If Punt Road End End were 200 years old, we would have had on this board people saying 'I don't accept that blacks are human, my slaves like working for me'. 'Women aren't smart enough to vote, my wife doesn't even want to'. 'Smoking is good for you, it puts a spring in my step' etc, etc.
Its a no brainer. If its free to pollute, Pollution will stuff-up the planet.

Taking the *smile* surely. If it was the will of the people than why do we see such rubbish poll results for the ALP?lamb22 said:They had their say in 2010 and they voted for the ALP who advocated a carbon price, independants who want a carbon price and the liberals who also have a carbon price (half of which less 1 want an ETS). Tony himself preferred a carbon tax in 2009.
If this gets through parliament the will of the people would have been expressed.
You can always vote for Abbott's rollback.

mld said:Does that mean that if one can convince themselves that the people are not well-informed , one is justified in not trusting the people and then looking to anti-democratic solutions?

Any particular reason why?lamb22 said:The essential poll is actually more interesting as it runs weekly polls and displays them on a two week rolling average. Running 53/47 coalition's way ATM. I'd be expecting status quo or slight improvement for ALP over coming weeks and running in ALP's favour after its implemented.

like deception just prior to an election, for example .mld said:Does that mean that if one can convince themselves that the people are not well-informed , one is justified in not trusting the people and then looking to anti-democratic solutions?
