Global Warming

Yeah this is always funny. We are all hypocrites to a certain degree I guess. My sister and her partner (whom I live with currently) make big noises about being green and always buy "Earthsafe" dishwashing liquid and the like run heaters and AC all day, even when they are not in the room and leave lights and appliances on all over the house. Drives me blinking mad.

Old cars are an interesting climate change dilemna.
The average age of cars on our roads is 11 years.
My old banger is 32 years old, and I have no doubt it spews more fumes than a modern car.
But, I've "saved" the raw materials needed to build 2 new cars by continuing to drive the old one.
Hybrids are another issue. Their huge batteries are going to last about 10 years then they will be land fill. They'll also need to be replaced.
Like I said, it's a bit of a dilemna.

Yes Poppa. Newer tech means fewer emissions but also have their own carbon footprint in terms of manufacture and lifecycle. Mades it very hard to be an informed green consumer.

With my old banger that I had til last year, I just made sure it got tuned and serviced fairly regularly which has big impact on emissions as well. I got a nearly new car last year which is much cleaner but is a V6 so it's swings and roundabouts.

Me 2.
I changed my banger (see my signature) from carbies to an aftermarket fuel injection system which is cleaner and cold starts are way easier. Cost me $1700 however :( :(

Can't beleive the oxygen Bolt gets, here I am writing about him. The man has a personality disorder, either that or is a complete *smile*. Like Alan Jones. Time and again he's exposed on media Watch talking half-baked, misleading drivel, never responds to any of it, just ploughs on regardless doing the same thing. His readership are none the wiser, they don't watch media watch or read decent analysis and Bolt knows it.

You're assuming that Media Watch is unbiased.

He's entertaining.
Do you need media watch to reaffirm you thoughts??
Agree Poppa, media in general is biased.

I'm fuming when I hear suggestion on TV that motorists may be forced to buy super petrol only to help with emissions. My huge gripe for ages has been "what about the car races with those monstrous V8s and other high powered race vehicles flashing around courses, spewing smoke and flames" when the know-alls never mention that factor? There's absolutely no balance.

What the hell are you talking about Merville? These 'breaths of fresh air' that is, those who agree with you and ignore the evidence, or simply don't understand the evidence and the scientific research process behind it, are everywhere. All over the joint, as evidenced by this thread. Nothing 'occassional' about it.

Its another old strategy that conservatives love to use, the old 'downtrodden minority' straw man, when in fact the opposite is true. The voice of the sceptics is disproportionately large.

Again, on 1 side gun scientists, other side, internet bloggers and shock journos. You've made up your mind based on that fact Merv and that is your right.

Poppa, we must be there by now. What are we doing with the old batteries from the Toyota Pious?
Cant be land fill, batteries are a big no no.

My other car turns 34 this year

BTW Merv, I posted this question to you a little while after you logged off for a couple of weeks. You seemed to have missed it when you were catching up with the discussion which is fair enough, but I still wouldn't mind an answer. :)

Merv and Freezer - what do you guys make of the fact that 97%+ of scientists with relevant knowledge concur that global warming is happening and is at least influenced my mankind's activities?

My right? Gee thanks, that's a relief, I was beginning to waver.
I hereby say it is your right to have an opinion as well. Bet you are relieved now.

Gun scientists, are the Climategate scientists included in that bunch?

'disproportionateley large' - in proportion to what? What should be the proportion? It is what it is, and that would be very difficult to measure.

Further to previous reply, as a sceptic i certainly feel dis-proportionately out-numbered on here. As a matter of fact, i know i am.

How to dispose of the batteries in the Hybrid is one of the great "let's keep it a secret" conspiracies.
It's convenient to ignore the reality of disposal and focus on it's other green credentials.
Which aren't as green as you may think http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKTOyiKLARk&feature=related

About 4 months ago I went in an "Economy Run" with 50 other cars.
The winner was a Fiat Punto Diesel which got 2 lires per 100km compared to a Prius which got over 3 litres per 100km. Go Figure.
My old banger got 5 litres per 100km.
