General Trade Discussion 2022

If you think that player managers just swallow blindly what footy departments say, I have a bridge to sell you.

You think 1) a player agent has the intel to make up on his own mind, whether a club can get his player in or not and 2) a club is going to make a player quit their current club, and deal with all the angst etc of doing that without thinking they realistically can ? Ridiculous. It’s when they get too smart or too cute with 2) that problems arise. And that’s what we have here -especially with Geelong. Otherwise it’s got nothing to do with the agent as to why they cant strike a deal right now. Nothing at all.

If 1) the player agent doesn't have a decent insight from either (a) the club telling them (b) their own enquiries then they are negligent in their duty. Pickering clearly failed (b). 2) players can demand trades all the time and they fall through and don't happen all the time. It's part and parcel of the absurd system we have where you need to trade for someone who doesn't have a contract.

Did Hartley say anything about Aarts? If we ditch RCD and/or Stack and keep Aarts, we are wasting our time
No, he was only asked about RCD and Stack from an uncontracted perspective, but comment would relate to other out of contract players as well.

Nah.

The player mgr doesn't have to rely on what the club says in good faith.

i.e. If Didoro said to Mgr A - We have the collateral (picks, cap) to get this done, would you take the club at its word that he will put your player first, won't try and sell other clubs short and get the deal done? He would rightly question what he's been told and take that into account when weighing that club up against another.

Sounds like Dom Ambrogio is also building a similar rep at the Lions. Combine that with very highly rated academy kids that need a lot of picks being the clubs priority. Not Dunkley.

Red flags everywhere getting Dunkley there despite what the club might have said. It was even spelled out on here why that it would be difficult to achieve. And that has come to fruition and should have been weighed up by Pickering and Dunkley before selecting Brisbane.
Ok, on that basis very few trade requests would occur because according to you, clubs - the ones with the knowledge - can’t be trusted.

I’ll ask you again: where does the intel and heart and soul basis and explanation for making a recommendation to the player come from ? It comes from the CLUB. How would an agent know about all the levers the club can pull to get the player ? He gets it from the CLUB. Not some arbitrary finger in the wind type process like you’re suggesting.

And the problem here is that the club has got too cute. Well Geelong have. The Brisbane one will get done with an F1, proving that its THEM that has been the problem.

Now you’re just guessing that the agent didn’t receive decent insight. Why on earth would an experienced agent like Pickering who’s done deals like this more times than he’s had Sunday dinners not have “decent insight” ?

The clubs have failed to meet their promise of capability - so far. And that’s the problem.

Pickering should have known that it was going to be very difficult to Brisbane to meet any promise they may or may not have given. Which given all the facts available was obvious, particularly with points needed for father / sons, one who is likely to be a top 3 pick.

And how would he know if it was going to be difficult or not Kevin ? FROM THE CLUB.

And If it was so obvious, he wouldn’t have been talking to the club in the first place !

Dunno about that. It's only my reading of events, but I think Brisbane's priorities shifted, and the result is dunkley could get shafted. I reckon a couple of months ago priorities were 1, ashcroft, 2 dunkley, 3 gunston, 4 fletcher. That's changed, partly due to pragmatism, they could get gunston deal done so they did, and partly buying into the JF hype. They, and I, thought they could get him for pocket change, he's a third or fourth rounder, but he's been hyped into late first/ early second. (I don't think he'll be that high FWIW)

No clear vision, reactive execution, dunkley the casualty, and highlights how good we have been over recent years.

They can actually get it done if they want to and stop all the bs they're carrying on with and thus, prove out that it's THEM that's been the problem.

They just need to include their F1 which they won't - but will. Just watch.

Geelong are different. They have much narrower capital to play with when trying to get Jhye Clark at the same time. They look like they might have miscalculated and now need to strong arm Cwood as a result.

Whilst that's true - The player mgr (in Dunkley's case) should have been able to read the tea leaves (despite what Brisbane might have said) and known it was always going to be difficult to get to Brisbane and might not get done (compared to other clubs).

He might well have done that. Dunno. End of the day the player makes the choice after meeting clubs and advice from his mgr.

Absolutely with 2 early F/S bids to match it was always going to be difficult to get Dunkley to Brissy.

Brissy must have given them some assurance it could be done though. Either way his manager has to be feeling pretty nervous at this point.

So this was in the making from the back end of 2021. Hence why we went all in the draft last year.
Stuff like this where the player firmly wants to go somewhere is hard to envisage coming to fruition without a long term plan. We probably thought lambert and Edwards would have been better in 2022. Their fall off was rapid and probably unexpected to most of us. Maybe with lambert there may have been a view.

Was same with lynch. That was done way out. Also explains previous moves to have the collateral to make these ones come off.

Just really excellent planning and vision on what our needs are and probably which other clubs have upcoming challenges making them in a weaker negotiating position.

Hilarious and also poor form that GWS couldn’t fit soldo in salary cap. That is a lot of posturing and putting a player through severe stress to consider their future as a bluff.

I agree they gave an assurance, but when they gave it they only had 1 early F/S to match. As Redford said, they can still do it, they just have to pay more overall than they initially thought.

Yep, stupid crap from GWS
Why did they have him fly into Sydney for a medico?
