yep. I can't describe how *smile* swans were. and we were only slightly less *smile*.
after 10 minutes, I thought if we don't win by 60pts, its a disgrace
Pies, Hawks and Swans employed similar tactics after quarter time to shut us down. Interesting to note that we won the inside 50 count in all three of those games.
The shortened games have taken away arguably our best response to these tactics which is to simply grind the opposition down. Other options are to pick our way through the flood with precision kicking but let’s be honest, we aren’t capable of that. Another way is to have players take shots from outside 50 but by my count we’d only have three players (Balta, Martin and Short) consistently capable of making the distance let alone being accurate. Plus it’s easily countered by denying those players the space to execute.
I guess we should take it as a compliment that three teams so far have seen fit to turn the game into an absolute abomination just to beat us. However, it’s largely proved effective and yesterday won’t be the last time we see those tactics used against us. Hardwick and co have their work cut out finding a solution to this.
In the last qtr Grimes stopped Sydney from snatching a disgraceful win.
Also hard to do precision kicking when ...
1. the opposition give you no space to lead into, and
2. the drizzling rain makes the ball wet.
Possibly explains why we persisted with long kicks to Jack and Tom and hoped that our small fwds would kick some crumbing goals. When they did get their hands on it they were swamped by too many hard-tackling defenders.
Certainly need to find a solution 'cause North will try the same tactics this week.
Time and time again we went wide into our forward 50. I think Jack lost his *smile* (and rightly so) when Short went for a shot from the boundary that sailed 10 rows deep out on the full. That one kick from our forward line is killing us. We are either electing to go that extra handball causing our forwards leads to be out of whack or we are bombing it blindly forward, allowing their 'keeper' to mop it up.
I dunno man. Defence and pressure is sound at the moment. We are hard to beat when we’re up and running and other teams know that.
As soon as Horse saw how sharp we were he parked it. They literally crossed to him lifting the phone after the third goal.
Lynch kicks that soda and we pull away. In 2017 we were masters of creating goals from forward turnovers in congested play.
We will get that back once we hit some drier weather and gradually improve base fitness levels.
I think we look pretty good to be honest.

Longmire needs to dig his head out of his ass if thinks he had only 7 sitting back behind the ball.
One stage in the 3rd qtr it was 4 Richmond players vs 9 swans players.
It was our fault too, if there was sooo many swans players behind the ball, we weren't working hard enough to combat this coming inside 50.
How many times did we kick it on the full or drive passes into the pocket.
Our smalls didn't help the situation either, when the ball did hit the ground we allow easy ball to come back out.
This is the worse we have played in over 3 years and we are sitting still in the 8.

But it's within the rules, so we need to be able to deal with it.
I'd like to think Richmond supporters can come up with some sort of chant to humiliate the next oppo to try it.
Yeah the amount of times that Bartel said that our kicks into F50 could have gone to the top of the square rather than into the pockets, you'd have to have moved from your fingers to your toes. We were obsessed with kicking to the pockets for some reason, which also doesn't help out smalls, as its easier for the swans defence to spoil over the boundary and force a stoppage rather than our talls bringing the ball to ground at the top of the square which would bring the smalls into the game more.
Horse's tactics were clear. Play a team of running midfielders to run back and clog up the space and try to get us going the other way. Our defence held firm particularly in the last half when the Swans 20 midfielders had got a bit tired and couldn't run back as quickly. I for one think we are doing pretty well. It felt like a 5 goal win given our dominance and the conditions. Under dry conditions and 20 min quarters we are still going to bury teams. Remember this season of 17 rounds and 16 minute qtrs is just over 60% playing time of a real season.
This is what's hurting us more than anything. Teams can do this running to clog up space for only so long. In full length quarters they wear out. Most of our wins over the last few years have us getting goals in red time in each quarter and burying them in the last quarter and a half of the match. Shorter quarters are giving opposition players more rest.
What’s all this talk about the Swans having a plus one in defence? The game I watched showed the Swans having a plus *smile* 12 in defence!!
Longmire is almost as bad as Salty Scott. Both one a flag very early days and have not been able repeat in 10 years or so. Both have a very good winning percentage predominantly due to a massive home ground advantage. But ultimately both have fallen short in finals since they last won it 8-9 years ago.
At least Horse has made the GF a couple of times since. That said I reckon he’s had his day. He’s way too defensive.

Longmore played 6-6-6... 6 deep, 6 real deep and 6 on the goal line.
