The rule doesn't mention the player having to be "over the ball on his feet". The sliding rule is an attempt to protect all players in a contest

Hmmm, so if 2 players both slide in from opposite directions and break each others legs, who's at fault ?

I'm pretty sure the rule was invoked after Gary Rowan was taken out (while on his feet) by a sliding opponent who took his legs from under him and broke his leg badly......... NO ?
