Game Day: Last game of 2023 vs. Port

UK were U watching the same game. Who did Bauer show up. Did he SHOW UP this afternoon? Was he playing at all?
Come on now. We lost by a few points and some bad umpiring to make it look a lot worse. Bauer and the other young fellas were the least of our problems - that includes Dow who had a much improved game.

Do we have a goal kicking coach? 8.12 from the VFL and 8.15 from the AFL team is 16.27 (37%). Terrible, and that's not including the out on the fulls..

Yes plenty to like. A good way to finish a mediocre season to be honest.

I enjoy seeing a young team with a high ceiling more than watching has-beens

It was a funny kind of game. We took a team to Adelaide that included the likes of Banks, Brown, Bauer, Tresize, Young, MoJu(!!?), Dow, along with a bunch of senior players who were never going to get excited about a dead rubber, and played against the 3rd placed team. By rights, we should have been smashed.

Rather, we stuck with them for most of the afternoon and could have been a few goals up at 3 quarter time had we nailed the sitters. The fourth quarter was always going to happen, and if you want a silver lining, we've got ourselves a bottom-six draw next year.

Tresize and Brown will play plenty of senior footy next season. Banks is starting to win me over. Dow isn't the complete package, but he had more impact on the game than plenty of his teammates. Bauer was never going to get near it today with Port's defence and our forward line delivery. Balta once again demonstrated that there's a significant difference between being able to take a mark and, you know, actually being a forward. MoJu once again demonstrated that he has a long way to go before he should expect any sort of recall into the 1sts.

It's a shame Sonsie clocked that Nth Melbourne guy in the 2's. Would have been a good opportunity for him today.

Anyway, not overly worried about the result, and enjoyed watching some of our emerging players stake an early claim on 2024. It's definitely not all doom and gloom!

Desperate need of a key forward.

We had big blokes in our forward line today but none have any forward craft.

How many times did Brereton call that nakas has been infringed in the ruck?
Where were the free kicks??
Port players were gutting slung 360 and all were called play on. Horn Francis went around twice.

I wish Nakas held more marks.
And Hopper didn't treat today's game like a wet game.
angry dirty harry GIF
Dermie needs to be sorted.

Bauer worked hard but a day when things didn't work and his teammates took another option than using him. Working with a new key forward like the unpredictable Balta doesn't help. Still think he has a future with us

I am relatively satisfied with the game. Not the result of course or the diabolical umpiring but the enthusiasm and some skill the new cubs brought to the match. Not the easiest place to play your first match away at Adelaide but they all acquitted themselves quite well and showed us that the cupboard is not as bare as we thought. With Gibcus and Lynch back next season we have a nucleus that should take us forward. Certainly better than this season just gone.

Where does one find the average ages and games played for the respective teams today?

We stayed with them (and played better at times) until the 11th minute mark of the last quarter. Port then got 5 dubious free kicks from which they scored 4 goals.

Our youngun's played well - a couple of our older players need to lift.

If Port play like that in the finals they are no hope IMO.
Spot on. With better targets forward & better ball use (huge priority for pre-season under the new coach), we were well in a game with a so called top four team.

Some disgraceful decisions (including a joke against Grimes that was basically cheating) inflated the margin.

As per all season, our issues are forward of the ball. Balta isn’t the answer, but Lynch (fingers crossed), Martin, Cumberland, Bauer and players to be found/identified within the list have to be. Bolton has to fix his finishing as part of the puzzle.

Maurice junior has one off season to improve but can’t be gifted anymore games - was rubbish before getting injured again today. Transition is already occurring elsewhere with Banks, Tresize and Brown replacing McIntosh, Pickett etc.

Grimes either gets fully fit or retires (I’d favour the latter - looks gone to me). Huge pre-season ahead to hit 2024 running and hopefully that means new strength & conditioning staff as well as coaching group. Lynch & Gibcus fitness is vital.

Been a tough year & with Llynch down early Gibcus Tarrant out of action so the end result understandable. The young guys who came in late also show great talent to make 2024 a better season. Dusty do we trade or keep him on for two more years. No doubt Suns most probably will dangle a carrot.
