That was a good game of footy, exciting to the end and, although I am very p!ssed off at the way the umpires treat us differently, I am hopeful as we just lost a game by less than a kick against a very good team without our best midfielder.
The first quarter and a half we were fumbly, dropped marks and some real missed opportunities. Geelong took advantage of this as we were poor in the first quarter and a half. The only saving grace was that we did restrict Geelong's scoring so they weren't as far ahead as they could have been.
Throughout the whole game there were too many passes which went straight to the opposition. We have to fix this. I don't mean things like a dump kick out of defence under pressure, there's little any player or team can do about those. It's the passes which are short or long and end up right in the lap of the opposition. Every team does this but we do it too often. This is a clear area for improvement.
But what a comeback. Richmond showed that we can play at the level required to win finals and go deep into September. Plenty of good signs there, we wrested control back and managed to get a good lead. Just wasn't enough in the end.
A few bad losses earlier in the year are going to cost us as we should be higher up on the ladder. The *smile* decision not to grant the 50m against Sydney will also likely cost us. But, the loss against Adelaide was probably the worst. In the StKilda game, StKilda took control and we couldn't stop them. The Carlton game they so comprehensively dominated the centre clearances we had no answer. Those 2 were winnable but it was our lack of competitiveness at crucial times which lost us those games. The Adelaide one we just should have won.
The umpiring was simply putrid. That free against Lynch when Riewoldt took the mark, well, if that is a free kick then Lynch is owed about a dozen frees, and that's just tonight. In the first quarter Lynch took a good mark after forcing himself out of the clutches of his opponent . . . oh, wait a minute, forcing his way out of the clutches of his opponent, while the ball is travelling towards him? Surely not, if he was being held would he not get a free kick? Laughable, happens every week, Lynch gets held so often in marking contests, even held away from the marking contests so he can't compete for the mark, it is truly a farce, although I will say it happens to a lot of players these days, open season on holding players so they can't contest the mark. Then they randomly pay one against Lynch at a critical moment in the game? Go figure, complete joke. The adjudication of this game is an absolute joke.
The Prestia incident. Hmm, nasty dog act by Stewart, his so-called contrition means nothing because he chose to iron Prestia out. They should have stopped the game. A player is in the ground, knocked out by an opponent, where is the duty of care AFL? Where is the 50m penalty? Farce. The media seem to think Stewart will be rubbed out for this, I reckon they will likely only give him 2 weeks. I'm sure some will defend Stewart's actions, TBR is no doubt defending Stewart's actions as I type, just as he defended Dangerfield knocking out Vlastuin which was apparently all fine despite what the rules say. No problem, some think knocking out opponents is fine, most of us understand that getting rid of those sorts of acts of thuggery was a good thing. Those who defend such dog acts are just gutless apologists for the woeful way the game is run these days.
