Foxtel question

I can record it with my dvd recorder also. But you can't get the foxsports channels in HD unless you sign up for the Mystar HD box. This will only let you record to the drive in the Mystar box. The output from the Mystar box is encoded with some sort of code blockers (macrovision?) that won't let you copy off that disk. This blocking doesn't apply with Mystar SD or the original Austar box.

Edit Sp.

Just bringing this back to life in lieu of our first win.

This is still an issue for me and my mate. Haven't yet figured out a way around it.

(Just quickly, I am referring to dubbing Foxtel IQ2 content from hard drive to Disc as per my initial post in this thread for those coming in late)

Anyway, was googling before and found this possible answer. Almost seems to good to be true.
I thought I'd post here and maybe some of you Foxtel subscribers could try it out.

I'm going to mention to my mate but he has a young child and can't devote much time to this sort of stuff like he once could.

Anyway here's the link to anyone that might be interested:

If anyone tries it they might like to post here if it was successful.

Regards.

Is there such a thing as a DVD recorder with a HDMI input?

Worth noting that the newer Foxtel box (model 851) only supports standard definition (760x568) via its component outputs, whereas the older 850 outputs in high def.

Hopefully they do something in future with the (currently deactivated) eSATA and USB connectors re allowing duplication to an external hard drive.

My Foxel IQ box has an HDMI out component but my DVD recorder (which is a few years old) doesn't so I can't try what they are suggesting which is to simply record the show you are watching on to a DVD hard drive.

Only way you'll be able to do it is with a PC.

Even better, just download them. There's a website available which has all the games, and a wide selection of historic games available for download (free).

I have every game from 2010/2011 saved on my HDD and will continue to download and save them for future reference.

I'm relatively new to this stuff and don't have a DVD recorder. Have Foxtel IQHD coming on Thursday.

AFAIK all Foxtel units have HDMI out, intended to go straight to the TV. The only way to get the picture to a DVD recorder is through composite video (SD), S-Video (better quality SD), or component video (can be SD or HD). From what I've read, the hardware in the newer 851 units only allows SD output through component video.

Jinx, what do you think of this thing?

That doesn't look too bad LTRTR. For that sort of price you could get something like this:

http://www.videoguys.com.au/Shop/p/24118/colossus-hd-pvr-pcie-h-264-encoder-windows-colossus.html

But either way, you're only going to get whatever quality the Foxtel/Austar box allows you to output. And even still, even with S-Video out you may get encryption that will block the signal.

For example, with MystarHD (IQ2 equivalent), you need this product in between the Mystar and your recording device (PC or whatever) to be able to record via S-Video:

Thanks for that. Was looking at the other one because it has a HDMI input which is obviously the highest quality signal, with a view to copying stuff recorded on the Foxtel IQ. The possibility of encryption is a worry, but how would the signal get to a TV through HDMI if it was encrypted? Will have to research some more...

What is the web address?

Just hangin it out there, but why not just download the 4 quarters from the RFC site onto your PC, use Nero or simlar and create a DVD.

Might be a dumb question but how do you download the vision from the Richmond website?

That'd be more trouble than it's worth, and the quality would be pretty average.

MalenyTiger - I'll send you PM.

Funnily enough I work for Telstra :)

Foxtel on T-Box is due out next month. If you live in an Austar region, if you setup your Tbox with a metro postcode, you should be able to access Foxtel content (as per Foxtel on Xbox 360).

Movie channels yes, some live sports no.

No-one knows for sure what will be available, but it'll most likely be identical or very close to what is available via Xbox 360:

does that mean that someone now that has foxtel on xbox cant watch the live afl games on fox sports?

lm happy with the quality from the afl or richmond site and sooner or later l hope they go to 720p and then l will be really happy.l download what l want and then watch it through a media player on my plasma

theres no dvd recorders with a hdmi input. hdmi is a *smile* because it requires a handshake by all devices before an image will display and this is obviously an anti piracy feature of hdmi which is why the big CE manufacturers backed it. without this handshake there is nothing stopping you from plugging ur Blu-Ray player into a BR recording device and recording then burning pristine 1080p movies. yeah good luck.

your best option is to find a recorder/burner with component inputs which can support HD quality images or you are stuck with 576i resolution with composite cables.

to give you an idea of how much control the CE guys have now, bluray players can now only output HD resolution through HDMI. they have restricted the resolution through component cables to max 480p because of this exact reason. the studios want this and in sonys case they own the studios so can basically do whatever they want.
