Footy media , love’m or hate’ m ?

I have watched footy since I was a kid, I go back to Royce Hart and Billy Barrot.

To me the beautiful game, the way I like to see it played, is the way we played it for 4 years. Footy skill punctuated with intense pressure, tackling of the highest level, footy with muscle. Aussie rules is a game of intensity, power and skill it is not a game of basketball.

The stand rule, the tackle that is a bit rough, the lack of reward for the person playing the contested ball, those things aren’t my footy.

It is why I have turned off the game so much

What Geelong plays is pretty footy, not beautiful footy
Yep. Tall, long-kicking wingmen, hard-running, desperate defenders, combative midfielders, high-marking forwards, all with mullets and comb-overs flapping in the wind on a blustery sunny day in September is the stuff of legends. By comparison, the possession game is caca.

How badly did we get bagged between 2013-15 for not winning a final ? And preceding that, the media just loved the tragic Richmond stories as well. They sunk the boots into us for decades - even when we were making finals.

But Arsendon haven’t won a final since 2004 and have had limited participation in them, yet they’re treated with kid gloves. Oh they really are coming… oh they’ll be better next year….oh they’ve recruited so well. So exciting. On and on. Excuses. The future. Blah blah blah. Year on year.

There is no other club that gets treated so softly as them. Not even close. Then, at the complete other end of the spectrum is Richmond. We get bagged for the slightest thing that doesn’t raise a whisper at other clubs.

The AFL and media hate us. They love Arsendon.
The Pussies are up there with them Redders.

Yes they are dayspa1 but at least they've had some success over the last 17 years. Arsendon have had none. They beat a 14th placed team during the year and the media go into raptures for 2 weeks about how exciting they are and how good they're gonna be. Then they fall away (often badly), miss finals or on the odd occasion that they do get in ....they're punted out in the first week ....and nobody bats an eyelid with any of it.

Again, if it was Richmond or Collingwood with a 17 year record like theirs, we'd be pounded week in week out year after year. Not Arsendon.

Bit of a grub then
To be fair to Toby, don’t think he had seen him for about 20 years

Interesting thing about him is that he seems to have a case of white line fever. From what I have heard ( listening to Craig lambert talk about him for one) he is a terrific young fella.

I remember years ago meeting David Rhys-Jones. Could not have met a nicer guy. Put him on a footy field and he was a different person.

Yep. Been charged a few times over his life. Mostly stealing and fighting.
There was a story he got caught stealing stuff out of an ambulance by a paramedic which broke into a fight.
He's an low life.

The narrative about Geelong in the footy media continues to make me sick, here's what Michael Gleeson wrote in this morning's paper:

Geelong play a beautiful game? Go and watch soccer if you want the beautiful game Michael. Kick-Mark-Stand ad nauseum, beautiful? No, just boring, and not what we expect from Australian Rules Football.

This is what is wrong in the media, the bullsh1t about how we all want this clean uncontested possession game. I don't know about anyone else but I want a contested game with teams breaking down the ground with run and dash towards goal, not the kick, mark, thread the needle bullsh1t.

DS
I don't know whether they actually believe this crap or not. Beautiful? lol.

Thing with the media is I reckon you almost never learn anything, occasionally on TV they will show vision that gives a but of insight into how a team or player plays, or is trying to play, vision that doesn't come up during the game, very occasionally there is an article that gives info an average fan wouldnt know. but most of the time it is just people giving an opinion that is a relevant or irrelevant as any opinion you will find on here, or any other fan site.

Toby and I have mutual friends. Good bloke. His old man is a lost cause, wouldn't be holding that against Greene.

The hysteria around all of this is a bit amusing. He did something wrong, and he'll pay the price. Not sure there's much more analysis required yet the media seems to think they've stumbled on the modern day equivalent of the Zapruder film.

Everyone’s a good bloke. Until they aren’t.
That's very true. The point is that we can't judge because all we know is the football/public persona of someone. Many judgements are made about individuals on not much information and only in one context i.e. footy

Years ago when players used to work outside footy I worked with two vfl players, as they were then. Both were workmanlike and not very flamboyant footballers but one was a big mouthed tosser at work and the other quiet and almost shy and didn't want to make a fuss.

You just never know

On OTC, Nick Riewoldt says Melbourne remind him of us (Gawwy denies it a bit) and then Healey says Port remind him of us.

Say no more. Copycats. We're still the best.

I actually thought he bristled that his beloved Dees are copycats. ... something along the lines of "this is all on Goodwin and yada yada" .
We've always known his hatred for Richmond. .... to have the most recently retired player OTC say, "They look like Richmond" ..... will be doing his *smile* head in!

Why would you bristle at being similar to the premiers of 3 of the last 4 years, sounds like a compliment to me.

What Nick said is true. Finals are won on the back of pressure and speed.
Compare us of 2013-14-15 to now.
You can't expect to win a funal playing chip chip then sideways.
Pressure wins you finals.
That 2017 finals series, most of 2018, and that 2019 second half of the season we were the best pressure side in the comp.
Goodwin has got Melbourne SUPER fit almost identical to us.
He gets his kids to run and pressure while Oliver and Vinnie Barbarino do the finishing work.
Its not a hard system but its an all in by in system.
I still reckon Lever actually believes he is the reason Melbourne have improved. Walks around like a rooster.
Take May and Oliver out bottom 2.
Best team in it. Port have still have issues Marshal and the other tall dud that kicks goals only against us, BurnJones, Amon, McKenzie etc.
Melb win GF 23 pts

Check out Titus' page this week.

Love this comment about the standard of commentators -
"As for the Giants, they got lucky in this one, but they unearthed some new talent in the form of Tim Toronto (that’s what BT called him so I assume it’s a new player).

Remember when getting players names right was a basic requirement of commentating?

Aren’t we fortunate that correct names have been replaced by annoying theatrics, blokey mateship and talking over Daisy Pearce because she’s making too much sense and making everyone else look bad?"

a question: the journo who came out recently and criticised other journo's for posting lies and untruths... isn’t he the same journo that said Balme was going to Adelaide?
