Footy media , love’m or hate’ m ?

I know Stewart gets bagged plenty, but he has become a very good footballer. He isnt the best one-on-one defender in the league, but his reading of the play, and his ability to get loose and intercept allows a Geelong backline that has Henderson and Henry as their talls to be one of the best in the league.
Of course a truly good club, like say Richmond, would be able to cover the loss of a good backman, or even the best of all time, like say Rance, and still win premierships, but it is hard enough for the cats to win big games when they have a full list to choose from. Expecting them to win a final missing a good player just isnt fair.

Yeah, damn straight. Stewart is a top player who towelled us up this year as well.

He’s a ripper I reckon Brodders , my point of it was just the way the footy world likes to kick us in the guts and kiss the nuts of the Cats

The narrative about Geelong in the footy media continues to make me sick, here's what Michael Gleeson wrote in this morning's paper:

Geelong play a beautiful game, when it works. The pretty, training-drill movement of the ball from end to end – kick, mark and possession – is an attractive way to play. But they have often struggled against the high-intensity teams in September.

Geelong play a beautiful game? Go and watch soccer if you want the beautiful game Michael. Kick-Mark-Stand ad nauseum, beautiful? No, just boring, and not what we expect from Australian Rules Football.

This is what is wrong in the media, the bullsh1t about how we all want this clean uncontested possession game. I don't know about anyone else but I want a contested game with teams breaking down the ground with run and dash towards goal, not the kick, mark, thread the needle bullsh1t.

How badly did we get bagged between 2013-15 for not winning a final ? And preceding that, the media just loved the tragic Richmond stories as well. They sunk the boots into us for decades - even when we were making finals.

But Arsendon haven’t won a final since 2004 and have had limited participation in them, yet they’re treated with kid gloves. Oh they really are coming… oh they’ll be better next year….oh they’ve recruited so well. So exciting. On and on. Excuses. The future. Blah blah blah. Year on year.

There is no other club that gets treated so softly as them. Not even close. Then, at the complete other end of the spectrum is Richmond. We get bagged for the slightest thing that doesn’t raise a whisper at other clubs.

The AFL and media hate us. They love Arsendon.

A close family member worked in the sports department of a great (?) Metropolitan newspaper right here in this very city a couple of years ago. The editorial opinion of that rag is that there are three types of footy stories that make a difference to the circulation (now known as click bait) and are therefore important to write. Only three. Writing about anything else just leaves sales steady.

The first two are negative stories about either Collingwood or Richmond. Everybody loves a good pile on when those stories hit the back page and sales go through the roof. The more negative the better. End of the world, doom and gloom, no way back type stories are best. It is not unusual for editorial staff to point out to the journos that Collingwood or Richmond have just lost three in a row but if you look forward at the fixture, they will probably win their next few games so drop what you are working on. Instead we will run a week of doom and gloom stories about this or we will miss the opportunity.

The third type of story has the opposite effect. If an edition includes a negative story about Essendon, for some reason, sales will fall. Every time. Understanding this is the "a-ha" moment. Stories about Essendon are always spun positively. They were brave, they lost because of free kicks, the drug saga was unfair, they will improve next year, they are laying the foundation for success. Yada, yada, yada.

Please don't cry, Essendon fans. Will you click on our website if we tell you how good your team will be next year? Pretty please. How bad are Collingwood going, by the way?

Absolutely spot-on, DS. Can someone get this through to Whately and the rest of the AFL media sycophants?

Nah. Impossible. It's a conspiracy of nuff-nuffs. All on AFL message as decreed by SHocking; his legacy continues. (Gil confirmed Stand rule to continue into '22 because it's worked so well!)

The HS just adore Arsendon. Despite a 50 point thumping and no finals wins since 2004 its:

"After bowing out of the finals Essendon’s attention will turn to the trade period. See who the Bombers have in their sights and get all your trade questions answered."

Imagine if that was Richmond. It'd be "Miserable Tigers fail again" and other negative headlines about the coach, players....doom ...doom...doom...

Btw, the count now moves not to 6203 days plus one but to 6203 days plus minimum 365 days. That is only fair. will it get to 10,000? That would be something.

Let's not forget how many of them are/would be Bummer fans including some bandwagoners.

I have watched footy since I was a kid, I go back to Royce Hart and Billy Barrot.

To me the beautiful game, the way I like to see it played, is the way we played it for 4 years. Footy skill punctuated with intense pressure, tackling of the highest level, footy with muscle. Aussie rules is a game of intensity, power and skill it is not a game of basketball.

The stand rule, the tackle that is a bit rough, the lack of reward for the person playing the contested ball, those things aren’t my footy.

It is why I have turned off the game so much

What Geelong plays is pretty footy, not beautiful footy
