Dynasty or Rebuild ?

We will need to rebuild when Cotch & Jack pull the plug & no sign of that yet.

we are not in rebuild mode. we are in a period of sustained success and I expect to be fighting for top 4 and contesting premierships for another 3-4 years at least. we are doing an excellent job of rejuvenating our list at the same time with some good youth coming through.

Thanks Taz. Earlier I put a comment up seemingly totally misconstrued although Mr B saw what point I was trying to make. The problem as I see it is this list from TT. Until the AFL release list sizes including rookie numbers as I see it nothing can happen.. I further suspect the 2 Cat B rookies may well be "safe". On this list Baker WILL be upgrade TOO THE MAIN LIST. Choi is clearlyIMO a problem, if he had not been extended he may well have been delisted Stack is in the same position as Choi although possibly "safer". The club may well be comfortable if Pickett goes home leaving a problem with Aarts. I have heard there are very favourable comments about Millerand he may well be retained as a rookie mainly because of his size.

The next problem facing the recruiters is they have a number of lightly played or untried mids in Turner RCD Martyn Cumberland Ralphsmith Dow etc. List management up to now has been taking a long term view and I suspect Hartley et al are aware the main short term concern is a back up ruck, replacement for JR8 and another tall KP draftee

My point was numbers given the above and the actual list size becomes crucial meaning the Broad, Houli, Caddy Garth and Astbury may sadly become expendable not withstanding the fabulous service they have given. Given this point recruiting say a Crouch as an example won't happen.

For me it's a Dimmasty and a re-tweak

I'd like to see some positional changes over the the summer into next year.

We are a system and structured side and have shown that any player can play a role quite effectively

but we need to improve our efficiency and and become less predictable with our ball use

like to see us mix things up this offseason

we have quality players that can't make the team (Broad, Markov, Ross, Caddy) because there is too much competition in the position they play

try markov on a wing, or baker in the middle or short on a wing / fwd line.

we can make some effective changes with the players we have on our list.

hope we don't lose broad and getting saad would allow for more of these changes

we need to upgrade castagna, potentially rioli also. kmacs and picketts disposals are questionable

baker and crouch in the middle with ross & prestia can alleviate the decline in cotch and edwards

we need to find a jack replacement asap

a fill in ruck on the cheap to help nank for 12 -18 months.

balta is the replacement for dtld

we need broad to help out grimes

short and markov's delivery will make it easier for Lynch and Jack

aarts remains and perhaps we need to find another crumber with pace and finishing skills

some reprogramming during the offseason and 1 or 2 new recruits will see us in contention for the next 1-3 years imo.

While we still have a fit Dustin Martin I think we should be trying to surround him with the best players possible. If that means trading picks for existing players to compliment our once in a generation talent, thenI'm all for it.

Our key position stocks (outside of ruck) are looking fairly strong, perhaps another 2nd forward to help out Lynch is required, but we have a strong backline, solid midfield and decent forward line. I wouldn't be looking at rebuilding for at least the next 2 seasons, we have talent to work with.

We still have an A-Grade defence in its prime, even if Houli were to go. Midfield, A- or B+ if Cotch retires. Dusty will spend more time up forward but he still has another year or two as an A grade mid. Prestia still elite. Bolton, Graham are stepping up. Lambert still good, as is Shed. RCD and Dow may yet make it.

Forward line - Lynch is still good for a few years. Jack may go but I'd hope he's got one more year to be a very effective second banana. Small forwards are OK, Rioli, Aarts, Canstandya although I hope they can show better form in more normal season.

Ruck an issue with no Soldo.

We're still in a premiership window for a couple more years, maybe more if the kids continue to develop. I'm fine with sticking with dynasty mode. Maybe trade some fringe players (Broad, Markov) to get in role players we need - a capable second ruck, another inside mid to cover Cotchin.

Meanwhile draft for KP forwards, mids, and then KP backs to replace Astbury and Grimes over the next few years. Balta is a keeper obviously.

We are going to need at least one of Ross, Dow, RCD or one of the unseen youngsters to become an A grader. Ultimately i thought Dow was a little disappointing. Was only marginally behind Serong as a junior but looked light years behind him when he played.

Gonna need to steal some A grade mids and a ruck this year or next. Have to mix the stealing and drafting though. Make no mistake we are behind Brisbane and Port with emerging talent.

I’m hoping the sort of dynasty that O’Neil, Gale and Balmy are working on is a bit different to the one’s we’ve seen recently. I’m hoping we never become a Hawthorn where we build for one big payoff period then slip into oblivion once it’s over (I’m predicting merger talks at Hawthorn / NM within 18 months ).

The dynasty I’m hoping for is one built on keeping top round picks and attracting the best free agents when they become available (yeh I’m looking at you Lukosius, Green and Serong). A dynasty built on superior talent recognition and development. A dynasty where we’re always there abouts (never slipping out of the 8) and will be winning premierships consistently every 3 – 4 years. In the process becoming the ultimate destination club. A dynasty that will be around for as long as the Pharaohs.

This is how good clubs find themselves in a world of pain. In the last two decades we’ve seen the likes of Brisbane, St Kilda, Adelaide, North and now Hawthorn trade away their futures in pursuit of short term success. What’s generally followed is a decade of pain and mediocrity.

We should continue on the same strategy we’ve followed for the last 4 years. Invest heavily in the draft (maybe not so much this year for obvious reasons). Develop that youth under the guidance of our current senior players. Use free agency to supplement our list where possible and only trade picks for players if they are young enough to be part of our next flag tilt.

They all develop at different rates and missing a year of VFL isn't helpful. 2021 awaits for all of them. You're certainly right that need at least one of them to be a star AFL player though. Still have belief in Ross - was in Adelaide for the debut against Port and pretty sure he can make it. It's RCD that we most need to be the player (and I haven't seen it at VFL level in 2019 to be honest and I went a fair bit) - big bodied midfielder with speed and skill are gold. Have to be patient to a degree but next season is massive for these players and us as supporters as it'll dictate what's in the next wave.

On this list Baker WILL be upgrade TOO THE MAIN LIST.

Sorry Gaz, I jumped the gun and thought it was a suggestion to upgrade Baker! Still getting over being beaten by a team with Zorko as Capt.

I would at this particular time as
  1. Look at our rookie list. They all need to be upgraded onto the senior list
  2. list sizes to be reduced.
  3. who do we delist this year. Rance, Gartwaite, and broad to be traded. opens up 3 spots
  4. Rcd naish Ross stack dow all need opportunity As they have talent. Is pick 18 and 36 in the next two years moving ahead of any these guys
  5. we have shown we can find and develop players from late in the draft.
Trade these mid tier 18 to 40 picks for one elite pick We need the next Martin, Cotchin or Jack Elite talent We have the Back up cast sorted for the next 10 years

Alternatively what about. Higgins, rcd, naish Houli to the bombers for their first pick. 3 very good talents that cannot get a game and the experienced veteran to help their rebuild.
And you must make 5 list changes each season, up grading the rookies covers this season, then next season the clubs first pick is around pick 55 - 60, even worse when FS and academy picks are added in. Glade your not the list manager.

I feel this year is the last opportunity to win a Premiership before we start a slow decline and a subsequent rebuild.
We are probably just about to cross the line beyond our peak, but I still believe we are the top team.
It’s 3 more wins folks and we bring #13 to Punt Road.

The decline for the Tigers could come a little bit swifter than I first though.

My main reason for saying this is due to the loss of our VFL side, the major factor in our depth and system plug and play development of the juniors, and the impending / possible departure of Jack, Cotch and Bash at least in the next 12 months and the possible loss of others from the list that are regular or reliable fringe senior fixtures.

The continuation of the club culture and environs as opposed to filtering in with a suburban club which was an abject failure for the RFC in its alignment with Coburg.

We may lose another senior player or two, and we have no junior KP depth of note apart from Noah who is already in the side and no Junior specialist KP Forwards or Backs of the requisite quality.

The fall from grace off field for CCJ and the poor form on field and off field lack of professionalism from Stack has also put a dented my confidence going forward post end of era now because this time last year these boys were 2 of the 5 most critical kids on our list with Noah, Bolton and Baker.

Now they are both no certainties to be at the club in 2021.

Hopefully they remain and find their form and bring to the side next year what we were hoping to get from them this year ...Stacky especially.

Things are not quite as shiny without the VFL program for mine.

We will get Jnr which is exciting for all Tiger fans no doubt.

2021 is probably our last live bullet in the chamber IMO with the current stars and list progression.
Here's hoping we didn't just shoot ourselves in the foot with our second last bullet last Friday Night.

Gotta go all out as nothing is a given and we might not get another shot at it.

We did win a flag only a couple of years after the Pitura deal though
Pitura came to us in 75, last played in the 77 final series when we lost to Norf in the semi final. Teasdale Brownlow medalist, the Whale came sixth in the Brownlow and Jackson played 100 games for South. Pitura was certainly silky but our fever desire to snare him, left a bitter taste in a lot of peoples mouths.

Yes, agree craigo.

Stack is the really disappointing one - sure there are reasons he was a shadow of the player last year but he could be a gun and play for ten years if he got his act together. I'm hoping he gets one more chance just for the upside.
