Dustin Martin

So consistent in the JDM over the years. I posted before the season started that I was really hoping he won one because it is a great reward.

The count reflected our year in the end. Dusty and Rance were the standouts, Cotchin and Jack were OK, Lids polled well but didn't play enough, our young players disappointed and then there was the rest.

Well done Dusty. A pleasure to watch. Greatest don't argue on Goddard my highlight of the year.

Martin had a very good year for himself. B&F winner and All Australian.

But how much value was he to our team? He is not as good a kick as some may think and some of his kicks rebounding out of Defensive 50 were awful. You could put the blame on a lack of forward stucture but I don't think he makes the right decisions all the time.

Forward of centre however he is DEADLY. A nightmare match up for any defender and can kick a goal from anywhere inside 60 metres. We didn't use him enough this season up forward and it hurt us. We need to find some quality inside midfielders so we can push Martin up forward again to help us win games again like he used to.

Sorry if this sounds like a negative post but I go for the RFC, not the individual.

Although I thought Rance was clearly our best player this season congrats to Martin on a very good year.

congrats to Martin and Rance, both excellent years.

it also shows our top three players (Martin, Rance, Trent), can include Jack as fourth (may not have the goals on the board however did plenty around the ground when he was teamed 2 against one) with Brett D (if fit as no 5)

we need another 5 five players to play well above their current year efforts to be a better team. Remember the six (still have a picture frame of them) Knights, Campbell, Brodrick, Daffy, Richo & Menrenda

Agree that some of his kicking later in the season was a bit off and resulted in a few turn-overs, but compared to his teammates he was a standout along with Rancey. Although you have to also counter those turn-overs with just as many risky kicks that payed off and resulted in goals, opening up the play in front of him. Cotchy was a bit of a turn-over king this year as well, even though you couldn't question his effort and other 1 percenters that don't get noticed.

You can't play Dusty permanent forward as we'd never get it too him. Check his clearance stats.

I know that, which is why I said we need quality inside mids.

What do you think Dangerfields kicking efficiency was to half time last night?

Yeah we need to add to our quality inside mids (hello Prestia) but i don't think you fully appriciate the year he had. Not sure who would have been winning the clearances for us this year if it wasn't for Dusty?

His kicking is frankly outstanding. He has a blot on his ledger, when he is kicking from a position deep in defence he is questionable. He should be instructed to handball and then block if he is near or inside the d50. I agree that he seems individualistic at times but given the state of the game plan he is having to be.

Full props to the young man with neck tatoos. Well done lad.

Have you seen Dangerfields kicking? just bombs it into forward 50 with no inteded target.

he is still the best player..

He's second in Brownlow betting. $4 with Dangerfield out, $2.35 to place.

Racked up the stats but only kicked about 9 goals and was number one in the league for clangers.

So will he quinella it? Third? Top 5?

(FWIW the $1.25 for Dangerfield seems like a much better offer than bank interest.)

Yeah, I don't think we won enough games for Dusty to win it. Happy to lay off my 40-1 early bet.

Interestlingly Dussty has him covered on most of the key stats at the same age.

Unforunately, i think even if we won more games and finished top 4 Danger would still win it, he seemed a whole level above every midfielder this year.

Dustin Martin and Clangerfield.

If they played face to face for an hour, changing possession, Martin would have 100 broken tackles and Dangerfield would miss few. Dangerfield is stronger. Much stronger. Face to face. (Dangerfield is, from my obs, possibly the strongest mid I've ever seen. He rips it.)

Martin is more agile. Step. Stall. New direction. Dusty wants angles and then he can just shake Clangerfield off. He can shake anybody off. Unless they're behind him.

That's the core of why Dangerfield is more an inside player. And Dusty is outside. For now. Clanger is 26 and our man is 25.

Dusty and Clangerfield are most comparable in their wayward kicking when clear. Clangerfield has been trained for ten years to bomb the sh!t out of the thing because Tex or Jerker or Tomahawk.

Marto has to think about it. You can't bomb to Statch. Or Griifenussion. And Jack is working wide. And here is where Dusty has some work to do.

Only fourteen(?) months apart but Dusty has to play modern football while Dangerfield can bomb like Nick Daffy.

As a Martin fan, a devoted fan, I think it's a bit harsh to throw him against Clangerfield.

In some ways Dusty has emulated Deledio's career over seven years. Every year he is in career best form.

But it's up to Martin to take the step to League best form. And next year he can work smarter.
