Demon tests positive to cocaine after home and away game

What I don't get is that this was supposedly Round 23, he played 2 finals after this and I heard on the radio earlier that is B sample hasn't been tested yet!! Seriously? The alleged breach was on August 20th, thats almost 2 months ago!! What sort of tinpot organisation is the AFL????

To be fair that is pretty standard for WADA/ASADA positive tests.

Even Bol took about that to have it confirmed.

If you kick walls/damage property and bend windscreen wipers of cars not belonging to you, then you're a f'n idiot, no matter how old you are

Regarding Hollands, some people on here being pretty hard on the kid.

What do we want, for him to be shot at dawn? Not sure what the substance is, and not sure about the off-field issues, but c'mon, he is 21 years old.

I think the media are up to their usual tricks in intimating that the Blues were unaware of this. They knew, every club would have to some extent at least.

The Blues have taken a punt here and it hasn't cost them very much. Good luck to them and good luck to Hollands. I don't begrudge him a chance and I genuinely hope he becomes the AFL player he could become.

In Hollands case, I think this might be the best thing to have happened to him. Instead of having his issues hidden behind the AFLs three strike policy and the club trying to keep things all hushed up, the fact he has been caught by the Police means he has to come out in the open. It depends on what the driver is for his possession of drugs, but I'll bet the Blues are across it and they clearly think the situation can be salvaged.

As Tigers fans, it seems to me that it is hypocritical to be deriding this, when we have given the likes of Pickett and Stack a go. Where they have come from and where they are now shows just how tough it can be for these guys.

We all reveled in the early days of Stack, and of Marlion's exploits debuting in as Grandfinal. I can clearly remember Dusty saying he was proud of the club for giving Marlion a shot. Dusty said that everyone deserves a second chance, and I reckon he'd know.
Nuh. Like I said. They are VERY well educated to stay away from this. He is 21yo. Whoopee do. I was 21 yo once. There was no decision for me to choose to get into drugs. Everyone has had opportunities if you wish to. I also stop at a red light rather than cause an accident if the other cars have a green light. Neither Marlion or Sydney have gone for drugs while on our list. And if they did. Then they should be treated the same. It should be clear in the players contract. Or do we continually not set boundaries for people? Oh, it’s ok, he’s young, he had too much time on his hands, the pressure, it’s not fair, it‘s ok for professional sportsmen/women to use drugs. It’s their right.

Smith’s penalty is a very wet lettuce leaf. He is available for round 1. The FIRST defence for all of these guys is mental health. Because of this, it doesn’t even count as a strike under the AFL policy. A nonsensical suspension but no strike. They (AFL) were also sitting on this, waiting for the right time to quietly release it and were pushed by the H/S.

Hollands still has a chance. His career is not over by a long shot. Carlton were aware and still traded him in. Neither is Smith’s career over. But what is the point of rules if they are not enforced? Where is the disincentive?? I’ll run the gauntlant……what will they do to me?…. First I will claim mental health issues and then worry about it from there.

Mental health is a big topic and plenty of people suffer from this to varying extremes and sometimes in absolutely debilitating ways. It is the current out clause of choice. Is there anyone who has gone for illicit drugs and not claimed mental illness so far???

Write in the contract of the player as to what happens if you do drugs. Give someone else a shot.

Staggering that no-one has come out and stated that they actually like taking drugs after they get caught lol. Seems to allways be a mistake or a mental health issue as the reason.

Yup. Plus….where do you get your prescription filled??? Go to the chemist and say i am feeling a bit mentally off…”have i got something fo you! A nice little bag of nose candy”…..

No. You buy from a dealer or through your “mates”.

I do not condone drug use. I also do not know the circumstances of this, other than what is in the media. He hasn't even been judged before a court yet, but the hounds on here are baying for blood.

And I do not understand the point you are making.

Also, I did not mention Smith in my post. His case is quite different to Hollands.

Whether we talk Smith. Ginnivan. Hollands, Williams from the dogs. Doesn’t matter. None of these guys acquired illicit substances from their local Woolworths. They have had to go outside the normal channels to acquire and/or use.

They are lectured to at TAC cup level. Do NOT.

Being young. In my mind. Is not an excuse to be playing around with this stuff. Having excess money and/or time is not an excuse.

Did you or anyone you know have illicit substances forced on you? It is a choice. And it should be in their contract not to dabble. When these guys are on $300k, $400k, $800k or more a year to play the greatest game of all, it comes with certain responsibilities.

No different to us turning up to work on time. Doing the job we are paid to do. Etc.etc.. Hell’s bells, I will come out of retirement if you give me another $100k to sign a contract not to take illicit substances.

Try working on a mining site with drugs in your system. Or turning up to start your shift over .05 for that matter.

This is a sport that our kids start to worship from a young age. So. At what point do we ensure there are significant consequences for getting involved. What message does it send to them? And what repercussions are there for those that decide to imbibe?

Both Smith and Hollands careers have not been killed. They still have careers. Smiths penalty is soft as butter. Hollands will play out in the fullness of time.

At what point do people get the message?

If there are no real enforceable boundaries, then the perceived boundary will get pushed and pushed and pushed.

Clayton Oliver's bizarre behaviour with the car windscreen wipers is really disturbing.

Kicking holes in the wall when you are with your mates is just d#ckhead behaviour, whether you are under the influence of something or not.

Wouldn’t be surprised if more stories dribble out over time. Been a fair bit of smoke over Clarrie for a while. No question about being a talented footballer. But………. And by what I have heard he is not just having a joint or two. Might have started there. Who knows. But he has progressed.

Hope he gets his act together. If not. Move on. His choice.
