Deledio ?

He plays in the midfield as well. He isnt confined to half back.

Not when they have Dal Santo, Montagna and Hayes.

Exactly. We need Deledio to stand up and become an elite midfielder - because that is where the majority of games are won. Unfortunately we dont have the luxury of having 3 or 4 other gun midfielders to take the hit so Lids can play back like Goddard is now and Hodge did in 2008.

dont get me wrong - i reckon deledio is a gun. Just personally believe he hasnt lived up to expectations.

I've seen Brett get 22 contested possessions (38 total?) kick goals and lay multiple tackles.

This week he got 6 contested possessions and 1 tackle.

He is currently a very handy player, but he could and should be an absolute superstar who dominates games by winning heaps of contested ball in the middle.

Why?

Because he can.

What worries me is that he is still not the clubs No.1 midfielder. Was drafted to become that player, his first year we all thought that this kid was the answer to our midfield. However, it seems he is unable to shake a tag and the fact he is now playing as a defender makes me think the coaches dont have faith in him as a midfielder either. Sure he racked them up on Sunday at HB, but geez a player of his ilk should playing that role. I feel after 5yrs in the system, he has been a let down purely because of his inability to play in the midfield. Hopefuly with the development of Cotchin and Martin - he will get back in there.

Also my 2cents - if he isnt in the midfield, i believe he should be a makeshift CHF
He was always a utility at junior level and not a pure midfielder, so if he was drafted with that in mind then the recruiters were wrong. He struggled with a hard tag at U18 level also, so not much has changed there.

He won't be played as a CHF either, from memory Wallace wanting to play him there almost caused him to leave at the end of last year and he wanted to see the new coach's intentions for him before he resigned.

Deledio,s efforts when he or the team havn,t got the ball is something to be seen.

Why do you put commas in place of apostrophes? Not having a go at you but it's just very odd.

For such a "skilled" player, he sure lacks effort. Effort seems to be his only downside though, has all the tools but just doesnt want the ball enough when the game is on the line.

On the line? is that before the first bounce or are you using it as a metaphor?

Oh I see. ;)

On Deledio, don't mind him on half-back for now to experiment and such but when Connors is back from his suspension I'd like to see him go back into the guts with Cotchin, Martin and Foley.

Stick to the subject Mr Pinickity.

Sometimes you get the feeling that Lids is not playing his natural game, that is, he's supressing his flair for the good of the team's 'mechanics'.
Just an observation..

History would likely show that, for teams on top of the ladder or on the way up the ladder, their best player was also their most inspirational player. Unfortunately for us, Deledio is our most gifted player but he doesn't bring other players into the game on the back of his determination or commitment ( especially at the moment in the role he playing ) like a Jonathon Brown, Judd etc. Young blokes coming into a club need to see that their best player is also hard and tough and stands up for the rest of the team. We don't get this from Deledio, we don't get that from anybody at present. Opposition teams presently have the psychological advantage over us because they've all got the physical advantage over us. We don't need run and carry from the backline from Deledio, we've got blokes who can do that, we need some leadership and getting the ball out of the middle from Deledio. Stand up and stop taking sh!t from blokes with nowhere near your ability Brett.

I can understand why they are playing Lids in defence but I think we need him on the ball delivering more into forward 50 and with stints even up forward to take advantage of his marking (which doesn't get utilised when he has to spoil all the time). He is one of only a couple who can kick goals from beyond 50 as well and I can't recall too many of his speedy runs through the middle this year.

We simply don't have enough quality on ballers to have the luxury of playing Lids off half back.

For Lids to play in the middle he needs to learn that when you don't have the ball you DO actually have to chase and man up your opponent. The more i see Lids play the more dissapointed i get. Soft, unnacountable, zero leadership, zero mental strength. Trade while we can.

Was disappointed with his disposal tonight both from kickouts and in general play.
He seemed to kick to contests rather than put the ball in front of a leading Tiger player.
Though his running off the backline was good tonight .

wow that describes the club for the last twenty years are you really surprised?

Whats wrong is they are mostly half back cheapies. He should be in the guts getting the clearances like Martin and Foley. I think he is a super player too, just not one that tries hard enough when it counts. I mean he has Ben Cousins of all players to look up to, the king of gut running and physical exertion. Somehow I dont think Deledio will change untill he is in a better team.

My thoughts exactly about Lids from a couple of weeks ago.

Sorry but IMO he seems to be turning into a cheap possession getter specialist.

Very, very dissappointed in both Lids and Richie today.
