If the ump gave it out, it would have been overturned by DRS.

Great bowling by Pakistan

Impact was umpires call so would have been out.

Not really sure why snake is so incenced by this, the rules were correctly applied by the umpire and he's annoyed about it. I get that it was hitting the stumps (as have many deliveries over the years) but the impact was outside of the line, so where the ball goes after that is irrelevant and why Erasmus gave it not out on field.

If Afridi is out, could be a big loss. Both he and Rauf have been excellent and will definitely be needed. Looked like he pulled his hammy but who knows.

I think snake is advocating to change a rule that has been in forever.

Although in a way he has a point. That rule would have been brought when it was impossible for the umps to track the ball but we now have cameras that can do it.

now I'm really confused, you're agreeing with me that it would have been out if given out by the on-field ump? Are we talking about the same one, wasn't erasmus the one I'm on about.

He said the umpire was blind for not giving it out.

I'd be for getting rid of the rule but calling the umpire blind for getting the decision right is a strange approach.

Its a classic final. Both sides deserve the win, both side will consider themselves a bit lucky if they get the win.

Yes its the same one. The impact was umpires call, if the umpire gave it out, he would be out. The umpire didn't give it out, so it isn't out. I thought it was Erasmus but not certain.

I get what you are saying. but you can't be angry with the umpire (he was blind is what you said) because he gave the right decision. The ball was less than 50% in line with the stumps (ie. more out of the line, than in line).

The groundman deserves a lot of credit. This wicket is a brilliant wicket for a final. Perfect challenge between bat and ball.

Yes it would, beause the impact was umpires call.

Umpires call shows when a small margin of the ball is in line, the same way with when it hits the stumps, the technology needs to say more than 50% of the ball is hitting the stumps, same argument for hitting in line.

So less than half of the ball was in line with the stumps. The umpires call gives the margin for error, as in its super close.

As you said initially, the DRS was brought in to call out the howler. if anything is umpires call then its not a howler and the decision stays with the onfield umpire.

My aunt with partial sight in one eye could see where that was tracking

So it would have stayed out if given out, we agree, but you're saying the ump was breaking the rules to give it out? Can you see my confusion?

I'm not saying he's breaking the rules. He made a decision that it impacted outside the line (which more than 50% of the ball was proven to have done) so he made the right decision.

As you asked initially, isn't DRS designed to take the howler out of it, and yes it is, therefore those line ball ones (where its umpires call) aren't overturned.

I assume Rauf is too injured to bowl. Wasim IMO has looked the least dangerous of the quicks, so Rauf needed to come in when you know you need wickets. Pakistan probably need to take another 4 wickets to stand any chance of winning.

but if he'd given it out, DRS would have said umps call, because it was hitting the stumps, so that was also the right decision right?

England too good, even if Pakistan had got a bit of luck and maybe a couple more wickets when they were on I still don't think it would have been enough, would have been a more interesting finish though.

Not all decisions can be conclusive as a lot of what happens is an assumption. I go back to what you said in the 1st post, you said isn't DRS designed to avoid a howler, well the one you called out wasn't a howler based on the current rules.

Also, if you take out impact in line with the stumps, you may as well do away with hitting the ball on an LBW. There are numerous times, when a batsman gets the finest touch on the ball, ball still going to hit the stumps but not out as batsman hit it. If it doesn't hit the pads, he's out chopping on right.

There are numerous issues like this in cricket but these are borderline decisions.

I was hoping the Pakistanis won for some reward, but well batted by the Pommies.

That'll make up for that loss to Samoa.... :))
