Coronavirus

I was reading a tweet thread by an epidemiologist a couple of days back, and they thought early to mid Dec would be the time that showed if it was okay or all going to *smile*.

They thought it would end up in a bad state after people go all nutty with the opening of everything. They were also very worried about those people at higher risk - disabled and first nations - due to the increased movement of people around the state.

Was pretty sobering reading...
Looking at the success of vaccination in NSW re covid cases, I don't think things will get anything like was predicted.
Yes there will be plenty of cases, but mostly young unvaccinated who generally will not require hospital care.
Most old and frail are done and some will still die.
Some younger will get very sick.
Kids should be ok.
I am now optimistic that vaccination combined with some covid safe restrictions and exclusion of unvaccinated will lead to a modest problem and some happy life things can return.
Can't wait. Wish it was now but waiting is clearly necessary until enough are covered.

Yeah we all hope vaccination will protect us, the vaccines are very good.

But the way the USA opened up and there were lots more cases and lots more deaths is a worry. The USA does have more issues with anti-vaxxers but the case numbers of over 3 million infections and over 50,000 deaths over the last 28 days are a worry.

Just hope our vaccination coverage is enough to avoid what happened there.

The US vaccination uptake by comparison to Australia is pretty pathetic. A reflection of the way covid was politicised in that country.
Even if the Feds were a bit slow & hesitant, thank heavens both major political parties are predominantly on the side of science in Australia & have pushed hard on the importance of getting vaccinated. Our numbers will end up far higher & it will save many lives & relieve pressure on our health system.

OECD chart of jabs per capita. Australia has just pushed ahead of the US and has one of the few healthy trajectories (with New Zealand, South Korea and Japan; Israel and Chile still going OK at the top).

Yep, the reality is that we will all eventually get exposed to this virus, the key is that those of us who are vaccinated are far far less likely to get sick, end up in hospital or die. That is the only way around the virus. The USA has real issues with vaccine uptake and they are going to suffer as a result, too many pollies playing games they think will help them politically and to hell with the health consequences.

On vaccinations we have:
51.42% of the total population vaccinated.
64.08% of 16+ vaccinated
Ranked 31 of 38 OECD countries, so we are catching up.

If we can get to 90% over 12s vaccinated I reckon we are in a position to largely open up with restrictions which are mainly aimed at slowing the spread to reduce the load on the health system.

Looking at the ABC numbers, Victoria is still catching up, our increases in first vaccination percentages are better than NSW and the gap is closing on the second vaccination rate of increase, we should see the rate of increase in Victoria exceed that in NSW soon as they hit the limits. NSW is now at 90.77% of 16+ with the first jab and Victoria with 86.22%. With more AZ in Vic the longer wait between first and second doses would have an impact but that impact will be disappearing as the AZ second doses would be coming due. I am expecting to see the Victorian rate of second doses increase quickly in the next few weeks as people who got AZ 12 weeks ago get their second dose at the same time as more recent Pfizer vaccinated people.

In VIC briefing today they had a Mother and her 17 year old daughter who had been on ventilator in ICU speak, unbelievable story.
8 members of family got Covid.
Elderly parents double dosed and came through relatively unscathed.
Mother and father 1 dose, mother quite ill, father very unwell, was hospitalized but not ICU.
Son unvaccinated very unwell.
17 year old Daughter unvaccinated was in ICU on ventilator nearly died, still suffering side effects long recovery ahead to hopefully get back to normal.
The 17 year old caught it off her baby sister who caught it in day care.

*Note: I have posted press conference in a post below

It's a nasty virus, 17yo daughter probably unvaccinated because she was waiting to get the vaccines when available.

This is why we need to continue to limit the spread until we can get just about everyone vaccinated.

Yes vaccine wasn't available for daughter at the time but her and her family's story motivated many of their friends, family, community and school to go get the jab.

Hopefully others can learn from it and their story has even a wider reach.

Also pretty brave to come out, especially the 17 year old, a bit sad when the mum feels the need to qualify "that we are not actors, this is not a script, this is our story" and goes on to say “Maybe there will be anonymous people online who will try and make her feel bad for speaking out. But they should know that nothing will ever make her feel worse than what COVID did.”

So I have a 12 year old and an 11 year old. 12 year old gets his second soon. 11 has nothing.

I feel the risk of school return to 11 year old is low based on my ‘research’ (aka google)

Should we be pushing school return for this cohort back until 5-11 gets approval and jabbed? I’ve argued no as negatives don’t outweigh the positives. Millions suffering education outcomes etc vs a small number getting sick. Am I off base here?

I wonder if the 17 year old had similar symptoms to this girl who died in the UK.

Would suggest that the immune response from childrens bodies may differ to adults and in some children this can lead to inflammation of the heart which ultimately resulted in the death of the 15 year old.

Wow. Those 2 Melbourne dheads have paid a massive price - 10 months jail. Minimum 3 months. They’ll have criminal records now which means one of them won’t be able to work in the finance industry anymore either.

What a pair of fwts.

Stack will be feeling a bit better tonight. Well done WA legal system. Melbourne should cancel their memberships for putting everything at risk too.

I wonder what penalties will be handed out to people falsifying vax certificates or entering premises or events requiring a vax certification illegally. Or premises not enforcing it properly. Betting a wet lettuce slap here in Victoria.
