Coronavirus

Construction workers, tradies, General people as well - no masks. Everywhere this morning.

This is going to get a lot worse.

Melbourne have put the cue back in the rack. It was a good fight for a long time, but it couldn't be done alone.

You would think every workplace will need to make vaccination mandatory or they will be deemed negligent when the inevitable workers compensation claim comes.

Another one for @lamb22 's Ivermectin collection. The anti-vax pro-Ivermectin tropes are literally killing people in the US.

Social media engines are literally evil algorithms as they feed what stimulates the brain. Unfortunately conspiracy theories release the right (pun intended) brain chemicals and if you haven’t had an educational background (IMO) that makes you appreciate science then as these things have an element of truth in them, then they are quite appealing.

Bit harsh to use the possessive pronoun. I think it’s good to challenge the norms - but I think to your point if we share rubbish it can literally kill in this day and age.

You mean the apostrophe of possession? Yes, arguably harsh, but as long as Lamby wants to call me an ignorant, arrogant dumbarse for challenging his evidence, he can suck it up. He promotes Ivermectin and flip flops between that as a therapeutic supplement to vaccination, or that "natural immunity is better", or that Ivermectin can miraculously solve the developing world's covid problems. By circulating this stuff on social media he is should be held to account along with the other purveyors of misinformation.

I'm for freedom of speech and expression of opinion, as long as people are accountable for what they say. "My ignorant opinion is as valid as science" is not an argument and I've got no problem telling people that, while agreeing with their right to say it.

Social media does mean this stuff gets amplified though and people die. What's the solution to that? I dunno.

Effectively social media has created a monopoly of thought. Governments need to break apart and regulate monopolies. But they do it very slowly. The Facebook whistleblower is a one of many steps needed.

The root cause is the algorithim that is looking to maximise ad revenue, which is maximised by maximising the time people spend reading / watching, which is maximised by spreading conspiracy / disaster etc.

IMO you may need to go anti capital here and make it illegal for these companies to be private institutions and they become an arm of the government - more like a library. When you do that they can have a core algorithm designed to promote science, improved health outcomes, happiness, collaboration etc.

As long as profit is the motive I don’t see how you get an answer that works in this case as I’m not sure regulation keeps up with the tech. And at my core I’m a capitalist.

My B I L & nephew have finally got their 1st jab, they were told by their respective employers "No jab No job".

This is how it will be from now on. Employers/business owners etc cannot allow themselves to be the situation where they'll possibly be sued for "negligence" if someone catches Covid from one of their unvaxxed employees. They also won't want to run the risk of their employees catching it from their customers/clients.
I dare say at some stage in the not too distant future Worksafe will get involved & declare that an unvaxxed employee constitutes an unacceptable risk to the workplace & orders them to be vaccinated or it will be shut down.

To share my story, highlights your point.

Just over 3 weeks ago my 2yo daughter was exposed at her childcare by a covid positive staff member.

The childcare told us we were tier 1 and had to quarantine for 2 weeks. I wasn't sure whether that included me as I didn't attend the site on the day, so I called dhhs, was on hold for two and half hours, then eventually got told yes, I also have to quarantine.

We were officially contacted for contact tracing a week later. If the childcare hadnt notified us, we'd have not known at all.

Here's the kicker. They didn't let me out at two weeks. We all tested negative on day 13, my wife and baby were released, but I didn't get a message until the two and a half week point.

And here's the kicker's kicker. In the one day I was released, by daughter was exposed AGAIN and we were all put back into two week quarantine.

I've now been quarantining for three and half weeks, minus one day in the middle, and I still have a week to go. And I never even attended the tier 1 site. I'm a household contact of a primary contact.

It'll be over a month without being able to go for a walk or go shopping soon.

With how rampant this is in the population, they're going to have to remove tier 1 isolation all together.

You quarantine if you're positive and that's it.
Yeah, that's a bummer. I'm guessing the fear of mirroring scenes from New York and Italy shaped those protocols.
Regarding 'communication' had similar poor experience which cost us 10 days pay because texts advising to isolate for 14 days didn't state the actual isolation period (beginning date/ending date) in writing. Upshot was lost about 10 days pay and time spent on mobile probably accelerated global warming enough to flood another low-lying island.

Not complaining because these are 'trying times' for most. Perhaps Hollywood has conditioned us to think in times if crisis we're up to the task. Hopefully next pandemic we'll be better prepared. Mind you it could be a lot worse...

If you've got a garden , a guitar or a book to write, Coburg- give it a nudge!

Scotty was campaigning against anonymous social media accounts in the leadup to the 2019 election as well. Did nothing about it then and will do nothing about it now. Its just posturing for the upcoming election.

Walked from the car to the presser without a mask. It's petty but rightly left himself vulnerable to criticism.
He's since apologised. Likely will cop a fine.

a mate sent this to me yesterday ,,, ,and my response to him mirrored yours "wasn't expecting the last line"! (he came back with ... you have better hearing than me, I missed it)
I wish I could unhear it.

So all ALP MPs check their religion in at the door of the caucus room?

Germanys Christian Democratic Union v atheist China Communist Party. Up to you.
I'd hope none of them let religious belief inform their behaviour/decisions. Not the bad bits anyway.

Maybe I should just hope when they ask god for advice god bases this advice on a rational/scientific/practical/pragmatic approach.
