Coronavirus

Where do you want me to start? Singaporeans do comment and criticise their government.

Current wave is a result of two hotspots. Jurong Fishery Port, the largest and most likely brought in by Indonesian fishermen, and a local KTV lounge. Theres no disguising what the KTV lounge is, it's legal in Singapore. Was wildly reported and officialdom even commented that it might be harder to contact trace because husbands don't want to reveal where they have been.

Not sure what locked up low income people or Towers you are talking about.

I think he's talking about the migrant workers who are in dormitory accommodation and were locked up in phase 1.

It's where they lived. We were all locked down and forced to stay indoors during that period.

That had it a bit tougher as it was rampant in the dorms but as they were all relatively young and fit, the death toll was nearly non existent.

Any severe cases were taken to hospital. Food and essentials were delivered daily. Medical staff and supplies were established in the dorms.

It wasn't fun for anyone during that period of ~700+ new cases a day.

Yep, fair points Baloo.

The Singapore government doesn't muck around, and they are good at executing on policy as well.

To those that really care (not many) i wouldnt. haha.
Heres my "human watch" today.
I live near Warrnambool (Country Vic) and apart from work (school) and supermarkets i havent been out the last 2 months.
Today, we went to market x 2 and pub for lunch.

i was on mask watch and general attitude watch (normally i wouldnt give a crap about anyone else but today i did)

Markets only had around 50 to 70 at each, 90% wearing masks and everyone looked pretty happy.

At pub, it was the same.
Everyone happy, wearing masks and socialising.

I was expecting more negativity.

Pleasently surprised.

Now i sit here having more beers, listening to Freo v Rich (sounds terrible)

Good to hear bunnerz

I do hope you are right though and NSW gets out of it quickly, but I don't think their focus right now is on suppressing the virus, but on pushing more and more to get vaccinated. I think they know this will go on for months, but will enable them to continue to push the Feds to give them more vaccines and therefore come out of this in a stronger position than other states as vaccines will be prioritised to NSW. I think this seems to be their focus now and makes sense why they seem to surrender to the virus so meekly (remember Hazzard almost throwing his arms up after 2 weeks indicating that maybe they are better just letting it rip).

I think they are trying to twist this to their long term advantage even if it kills some people. They are collateral damage I suspect. Ruthless leadership if thats what they are doing.
Hazzard is a dead set nincompoop.

If they try to vaccinate their way out of it, it will continue for months and very possibly bring the other states down.

There's a campaign underway to give AZ's image a makeover, but people won't un-hear what they've already heard.

Was told by someone who worked there that there are cameras absolutely everywhere and if someone gets caught shoplifting, it makes the news.
Yeah nah.

There are cameras everywhere, but apparently less per sq km than London

Only shoplifter videos you see if they were caught on camera but haven't been caught. Those caught won't make the news.

Can you show me where?

Do you mean in a conversation or the written word? Certainly conversationally.

When I lived there (albeit briefly) the newspaper made me laugh at how biased it was.

Show you what where?

Mainstream media is government owned and the government mouthpiece, they won't criticise directly. But you might be surprised what you can find in their online forums.

Now there are a few online/electronic media sources that are independent and they certainly aren't government mouthpieces.

Now, criticising the government is a subject of degrees. Stick to facts, don't go in hysterics, don't make unfounded accusations and you'll be fine.

Start exaggerating or making stuff up and you may well find yourself in court fighting libel charges pretty quickly.

Not sure what the image makeover for AZ will be - it can lead to a largely treatable and very rare side effect of blood clots, at a lower rate than the contraceptive pill. It is very effective in reducing severe illness and death from COVID.

Seems a reasonable image to me.

Of course, when some anti-vaxxers and incompetent politicians make stupid statements it doesn't help. Then, of course, the RWNJs and RWNJ News spout lies and froth at the mouth so that scares some people, and convinces some morons.

For most of us though AZ looks like an effective vaccine with very low risk.

As Roar said a while back most people don't have a good ability to judge absolute risk, so it's hard to see AZ making a comeback in Oz, but hey, you never know.

NSW applying a longterm vaccination strategy to the immediate problem is mindboggling. Gladys seems totally unable to enforce a real lockdown. Dan showed her how but she can't do it.

The sh!t canning of AZ in Aust (and elsewhere) has been disgraceful. Sold at cost and works a treat.

Meanwhile, in Israel, where Pfizer was used, they are now doing third doses.

This is massive news. Basically puts to rest that you still carry the virus if you're vaccinated. Game changing data.
Get vaccinated & not only protect yourself but others too.

I think this percentage would significantly overstate the percent that don’t get effected. Lots of vaccinated people would be asymptomatic and not get tested and never know they had it.

But there is other evidence says you are less likely to even get it if you are vaccinated and also less likely to transmit.

For me this data shows the Darwin Award winners that will come from being anti vax. Also the number is so small you would wonder if that is the failure rate of vaccine manufacture and delivery . Ie the vaccine wasn’t stored correctly or delivered correctly in the tiny fraction of cases where people get it.

Do you really think they are focused on suppressing it? Their rhetoric has been clear, lets vaccinate out of this, and Gladys's presser yesterday gave it away, they are using the outbreak to get themselves ahead of all of the other states by pressuring the government to send them more vaccines so they never have to lockdown again. That was as clear as it comes.

Totally agree and mentioned the same on this thread a number of times.

I believe they need to hire a marketing firm to sell AZ to the people. I mean on a Current Affair last week they were interviewing people outside a pop up vaccination hub in Sydney. An 85 year old woman said she was there hoping to get the Pfizer, didn't want the AZ because of the risk of blood clotting. 6 deaths out of 6.3m vaccinations is a miniscule risk. We know from our outbreak last year (which wasn't Delta) that if you were over 80 and you caught Covid, you had a 1 in 3 chance of dying. 1 in 3 vs 1 in a million. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm something's not right when those risks aren't being weighed up closely.

The AZ is a no brainer for those over 60. The risk of blood clotting is tiny for that age group. How we are not above 80% 1st dose for the ages groups over 60 is awful and due to the spread of misinformation.

BTW did anyone see the article that said that Sky News Australia have been banned from Youtube for a week (a yellow card if you like) for spreading misinformation around Covid on there (I suspect it was an Alan Jones thing). These guys are a danger to society.
