Coronavirus

I’ll try one more time MDJ because you just seem to want to ignore the facts in some sort of vendetta.
The information stated at that meeting was then given to those who are actually in charge of delivery and that is not CHO.
You should also note that the deputy secretary who is Prof Sutton’s boss has since been stood down. She was in charge of his office as well as many other things, including providing health services to the hotel quarantine program.

I'm not saying he was putting a uniform on and checking rooms. But he's the guy I see on TV every day giving me updates on Covid-19 in Vic. He is telling me what I am allowed and not allowed to do. He is the state CHO. He is a public health expert. This is the largest public health crisis ever faced in Vic. I assume like in most heirarchy's the bloke at the top is ultimately responsible for the handling of such a crisis? If he is not overseeing or having some input into the overseeing of the largest source of infections then what is he doing? Is he just a tv presenter?

Was he responsible for the execution of the program? Of course not, and security firms (why were they chosen) have royally *smile* it up but it appears they had little instruction or monitoring. And it appears this latest effort on the housing commission apartments will follow a similar path.

Do I have a vendetta? WTF? I could care less who he is or which side of politics he is from. I just see it as a continuation of politicians and public figures not taking responsibility for their *smile* ups.

This recent thread just reinforces how blinded most are by party loyalty. Just as the red neck right can't see Trumps faults the left are silent or make excuses when their side (for want of a better term) stuffs up.

On the nine housing commission towers... the government says they'll be in lockdown for at least five days, depending on testing uptake and results. Maybe the plan is to have residents pressure the recalcitrants to get tested, and hope for a flow-on effect to the public at large.

Key quote: " The Age is not suggesting Professor Sutton did not act on the concerns, only that he was told. "

Dunno why you are so hot to pin blame on Sutton as has been stated before he is an advisor he doesn't actually make decisions, those are made by the politicians.

Cool. And agree he's done a great job. Other states are jealous. SA's can't wait to be allowed back here once we re-open our borders.

That's a weak cop out IMO.
People need to take responsibility for their own actions and hide behind a protest if they choose to ignore the current recommendations.
And the current evidence is that the virus has been spread by people working at the hotels, then spreading it thru their families and close contacts.
Agree. Ignoring gov't advice and recommendations is the reason for the spread. Those blaming the gov't should look at their own behaviour.

He is a public servant it has nothing to do with politics. Nor has it anything to do with left versus right. It is all about attacking the right people.
He has said he is not responsible for delivery, the person who actually is has been stood down but you continue to attack the same person for what reason ? He is the person you see on TV
Given that the person who is responsible in the public service has been stood down I am not sure what you want except for a public servant owning up to something that he is not responsible for.

Interesting theory.

Coronavirus: Japan's mysteriously low virus death rate

As he announced the lifting of the state of emergency late last month, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spoke proudly of the "Japan Model", intimating that other countries should learn from Japan.

If you were to listen to Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso, it is down to the "superior quality" of Japanese people. In a now notorious comment, Mr Aso said he had been asked by leaders of other countries to explain Japan's success.

"I told these people: 'Between your country and our country, mindo (the level of people) is different.' And that made them speechless and quiet."

Literally translated, mindo means "people's level", although some have translated it as meaning "cultural level".

It is a concept dating back to Japan's imperial era and denotes a sense of racial superiority and cultural chauvinism. Mr Aso has been roundly condemned for using it.

But there is no doubt that many Japanese, and some scientists, think there is something about Japan that is different - a so called "Factor X" that is protecting the population from Covid-19.

OK. Seems crazy he has no input into it but I'll accept you are correct. Cheers.

Victorian government losing the fight to contain coronavirus (paywalled)
John Ferguson
The Australian
July 5, 2020

The Melbourne public housing shutdown is a clear sign of a government running out of time to contain the virus.

Forget all the cliches about Daniel Andrews and his cabinet.

The government does not want to be doing this on several key levels, some of them political.

The global pandemic lesson is that the virus spreads rapidly in high density, low socio-economic housing.

The residents are less likely to have access to the best medical care and advice and have inferior facilities.

There are few lifts, few places to wash clothes and there are often language barriers.

None of this is to condemn the less well off, rather to point out that the situation in Flemington and North Melbourne is highly complex.

Geographically, the worst of the virus contamination in these latest outbreaks, has been in the outer suburbs.

Now we are seeing the virus start to become highly active in the inner city.

It is on a march, with activity right up to the CBD.

With this is mind, it looks like the government is losing the fight to contain it.

It will be no surprise if within the next week or two there are markedly wider lockdowns.

Strategically, there should be discussions within government about whether it has the right structures to respond long term to the crisis.

Andrews is absolutely relying on an inner sanctum crisis Cabinet but now may be the time to widen that advice.

Particularly given the size of some of the mistakes committed while executing the emergency response.

The hotel quarantine scandal is utter political folly and driving these latest outbreaks.

Andrews, at the same time, is losing respect nationally for having exposed the country to what looms as a significantly longer economic hibernation than might have been necessary.

The stakes have always been high.

But, having all but tethered the virus, 25 per cent of Australia’s engine room is now close to being shut down for the second time.

Untrained airline staff to work in bungled quarantine hotels

Qantas and Jetstar airline staff have been brought in to work in Melbourne quarantine hotels.

The Herald Sun can reveal employees of the grounded carriers are helping at several major hotels in the latest major development in the coronavirus containment drama.

Hundreds of the staff will be used to replace private security operators who left in recent days.

There has been a major overhaul of the running of quarantine hotels recently with Corrections Victoria workers - including prison officers - seconded to the venues.

Much of the transmission has been linked to the quarantine hotels.

There are suspicions that security guards are linked to its spread from the hotels to major community outbreaks in recent weeks.

Those have had a devastating impact, causing postcode lockdowns and the shutting down of public housing towers.

Thousands of Qantas and Jetstar workers have been left jobless by the impact on the travel industry of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sources close to the bungled quarantine program have raised concerns over the use of airline staff, questioning why poorly-trained security guards were being replaced with an even less trained workforce, rather than defence force personnel.

It comes as Victoria recorded another 74 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the state’s total to 2536.

Probably requires some clarification, but raises questions as to whether the Vic government actually has a clue about what it is doing.

Seems like bad times in Victoria right now. I hope for all your sakes they can get this under control.

Pretty damn close though. A coincidence? We'll never know.

we do know. I dont buy Lee's ridiculous conspiracy theory that the government is censoring any stats about Covid from the demo. Trump supporter style thinking, especially when they've been honest about the hotels fiasco, a much bigger scandal.

Conservative virtue signalling.

The security firms make convenient scapegoats, don’t you think?

This government has accepted zero responsibility to date.

Scapegoats? Were they on site? Were they doing their job? Seems not. There is fault in terms of their selection but they can't be considered scapegoats, no.

Who’s responsible for the decision to hire them? The lack of action until too late? The calling on the army and then sending them back?

Nobody in government is responsible. It just happened.

Gone, is she? I believe she still has her title. And you had to dig pretty deep to find an incidental remark from Dan.

He hasn’t accepted responsibility properly and I wouldn’t expect it of him. But it’s gone bad on his watch.

PS the protesters were selfish arseholes.

Of course they were, and all the mums and dads flooding Bunnings and Chaddie are saints.

Was it Sutton who decided no golfing? Might explain a few posts on this thread.

Obviously security guards and commission housing residents playing too much golf. Hopefully Sutton will be banning the main source of transmission again soon.
