Turns out most of the "refusals" for testing in quarantine was mostly small kids who's parents didn't want them to go through the discomfort. Not evil ethnics after all.

Not sure who said it was evil ethnics. Anyway, allowing anyone to refuse a test is ridiculous considering Andrews was happy to fine a bunch of teenagers hanging around a park together. Can't have it both ways; the response has to be all in.

I've had the test. Sure it's uncomfortable but that lasts all of 3 seconds. These are unprecedented times and unless there is a compelling medical reason not to do it the kids can put up with a few seconds of discomfort.

Reckon they will try and lockdown those 10 hot spot suburbs; the overwhelming majority of cases are coming out of those. How realistic that is and how successful it will be is another story.

This is turning into a categoric failure by the Victorian Govt in relation to hotel quarantine. It appears that the failure of hotel quarantine due to amateurish management of the program is in the main responsible for the spike in cases. The Vic Govt response started well but has gone off the rails.

They will first lock down the hot spot suburbs. If that fails then we all got back to Stage 3.

An epic fail from the government. The change in mindset from all when the government turned a blind eye to the mass protest has definitely played a part.

Weren't we told kids were immune and don't pass on the virus? Shouldn't be an issue then.

I don't believe in the Easter Bunny either, but I don't buy into the evil leftist progressive government of Dan Jong Il Andrews lies to us at every turn to avoid admitting mistakes. That's just not possible in a system where the data is collated and held by many different institutions and political actors.

There's critical thinking which I'm a big fan of, and then there are conclusions based on ideological predisposition. As always, if you have data or information that shows otherwise I'm happy to change my mind.

Hard to understand how it got back here when the most comparable state, NSW, had far worse early numbers & eased most restrictions earlier. I imagine they've had more returning travellers to manage as well. The argument that the spike has been caused by the cave in of gov't to pressure does not stand up to scrutiny.

Probably should be some sort of investigation of the VIC health department management of cedar meats/hotel quarantine outbreaks.

I heard they were enlisting the Sherriff office to manage the hotels ...that sounds so ridiculous it has to be fake news.

This is from a friend of mine on facebook recently. Nothing in the constitution would prevent a state government mandating testing, but this is the kind of thinking these days.

Are the other states testing to the levels of Vic ? Are they testing at all? They've probably taken the Trump approach and stopped testing.

It would be helpful if the Vic government would provide more info around the numbers, sure a spike to 75 sounds high, but if they have been testing more its not necessarily that there is a spiralling caseload.

Positive test data versus total testing data would be useful to assess where we are at in Vic. The spike today was expected due to the increased level of testing over the weekend.

I believe NSW is still testing on a similar level to Victoria. Read something about over 20,000 tests on one day last week?

Good point and would be good to assess as I just posted too. If we had the data set showing positive test correlation to total testing.

With testing asymptomatic people our rate should decline though the base number goes up. If the rate stays the same then we have a bigger problem.

I was heading to Vietnam after the original season so I've been taking a bit of interest in it.

They certainly responded early and hard but I wonder in a country where most people as so poor that they bury the dead in their own rice fields how accurate their numbers could be.

The Vietnamese are highly disciplined as a society, and coupled with tighter social control, they've done superbly well. They had one guy (British) in hospital on a ventilator for 64 days or something - he survived. They also have good socially funded healthcare.

This article explains a lot of how they did it - cracked down hard and early before the virus penetrated much. Some things they did we can't do, like using surveillance mechanisms to keep control and taking down hoax postings on social media. Targeted test/trace and quarantine for big numbers of people (in the thousands) if a single positive was found.

Doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Certainly sounds better than contracting it out to the cheapest security contractor.

Why not do this properly and set up a quarantine station, somewhere nice and close to the airport so there is as little travel as possible.

Yes but I'm meaning more than that. Ie. some people will see the 75 or whatever it was and thats a big jump from yesterday in the 40's and it will spook people. If as expected the increase is due to more testing, what you should see is the rate as a % of tests should decline. ie. the growth in numbers is increasing and this was expected as we went on a testing blitz. We were aiming to find those asymptomatic people and therefore while case loads increase, the rate declines indicating that we are finding those that are unaware carriers. If the rate remains the same with the increased testing then it indicates that community transmission is much higher than we thought and we have a bigger problem.

Data points to conclusions and the people are being given very little. Just seeing numbers increase provides absolutely no context and ultimately is leading to panic buying. My Coles yesterday there was maybe half the fresh fruit, things like 2 minute noodles (which my kids like for lunch) were wiped out, as were several other things that did not have restrictions like milk and even things like eggs that did have restrictions.

We need more information and more contest around the data. I'm certain they have this data, its not like at the start of the pandemic. We are well set up for this, we just aren't providing information to the community which we should be doing.

The NBA is set to re-launch with all teams in Florida in less than a month, and yesterday they had 30+ players test positive and 9,000+ new cases in Florida.

Gotta hand it to them for showing us up on how to more ineptly run a competition.
