Coronavirus

$$$$ over safety & lives!

I wouldn’t trust our government to do the right thing.

I wouldn’t trust the Chinese government to do the right thing or it’s data on what’s happening with this virus.

they original tried to hide this from its people and the world of its existence and threat !

first SARS now this!

The wealth of a national or the health of a nation.
A Chinese women has passed the coronavirus to 5 relatives while not showing any symptoms.
Now is not the time to lift the travel restrictions.

This potential risk is of course the reason for the 14 days quarantine. I have heard however that there is now some doubt it may be long enough with evidence that some people who have the virus may have been asymptomatic for as long as 19 days.
I am not really in favour of lifting travel bans but if we do then quarantine has to be long enough and that may actually be more than the current 14 days

Here we go..
Scotty from Marketing is a fecking idiot.
He's beside himself with excitement that the Rapture is coming. Unconfirmed reports he's been rolling around on the floor at Kirribilli, speaking in tongues: "Ooogityboogityhummanaflummana!"

Bizarre. The short gain of fees from a few students versus risking a pandemic and its catastrophic consequences.

The problem is we are talking a hell of a lot of fees from thousands of students (think billions of dollars) and a higher education system which would collapse without the fee income.

Add to this the reputational risk and consequent huge loss of income in the future and you get a very nervous government.

Plus, each student spends a lot of money in Australia as they are living here.

I don't agree with relaxing the travel ban until we know what is going on and we know that any risk can be dealt with. But you always need to understand why something is happening, even if you disagree with decisions.

Agree with your points DS and well laid out. Understand what is at stake. But also understand the big picture - only need to look at the ABC's article today on life in Wuhan the past month to gain an insight into what life in Melb/oz would be like with a broader global pandemic.

With so much of China in lock down, the flow on effects will be interesting to say the least in the next few months.
So much of what we rely on is made in China.
The effects of that will soon bite..
A mate works in one of the biggest clothing chains....said stock is drying up as little coming in.

Another 99 cases aboard the Diamond Princess. You couldn't get me off that thing quick enough, even if it meant another two weeks of boredom locked up in a military barracks.
lest I be accused of 20 20 hindsight but did anyone else think quaranting 100s of people on a ship was not going to work out well?

Sure they are well qualified but the best credentialed doctors in particular medical specialties are working in clinical practice is my point not working as medical administrators. Put it this way, if I was given medical advice related to a coronavirus by the chief medical officer of the state and also by the head of infectious diseases at a major hospital and they were different I would definitely take the advice of the 2nd one in preference.
But hopefully it’s moot because the best medical advice is being given to our medical authorities by those who are experts in this field.
I'm guessing the Chief doesn't just operate solo. In fact he probably calls up his former Uni mate the Head of Infectious diseases to inform his official statements. And I would think he would be talking to the research teams in university labs and those who specialise in disease infection modelling. Not everyone in this game wears a stethoscope to work.

The frank admissions begin.

Victorian coronavirus outbreak ‘very likely’ (paywalled)

A coronavirus pandemic is very likely, if not inevitable, according to Victoria’s chief medical officer.

Dr Brett Sutton said his team was hoping for the best but planning for the worst.

“It’s clear that with local transmission in several countries that a pandemic is very likely, if not inevitable,” Dr Sutton said.

“We are working rapidly on planning and surge with our health sector.”

The chief doctor confirmed Australian authorities were working on containing anyone with symptoms or who test positive in a bid to contain the outbreak.

He said the chief health officers from around the country were in contact every day.

“This is critical — pandemics challenge all sectors with effects on supply, workforce and business continuity,” Dr Sutton wrote on Twitter.

“I’m confident we’re well placed to meet the challenges ahead, whatever they might be. Hoping for the best, and planning for the worst.”

The doctor confirmed around 1300 Victorians had so far been screened for the virus.

Dr Sutton warned healthy adults had died from the virus.

“The elderly and those with existing medical conditions are definitely more at risk,” he wrote.

“But some healthy adults have also become severely unwell or died.

“For children under 10, the news seems good — mild illness and no deaths I’m aware of.”

The chief doctor advised Victorians to stay on top of the current health advice, which he said would change as the situation develops.

“We’ll go into a phase when it’s time to focus on hand hygiene, coughing into elbows etc,” he wrote.

“Isolation if unwell and quarantine if you’re a close contact of confirmed case.”

Coughing into elbows was a technique advised for use by the general public during the SARS outbreak.

Just as long as there's no stigmatisation, eh doc?

Good luck finding P2 or better masks.

Japanese authorities didn't really care. They didn't want anyone coming off the ship and escalating the rate of infection to the general population.

Saw the writing on the wall a month ago.
No way known we were going to contain this.
Whilst you cannot for a second trust the information coming out of China, South Korea just updated to Red Alert which gives you some idea of how bad things are.
Batten down the hatches.:(
