Changes versus Port

I just watched Dimma's presser. Sounded to me that Mabs is right in the mix.

If that's right, who's out?

He spoke glowingly of Astbury, Balta, Broad and Grimes. So I assume Broady stays. So who goes out of the forwards?

No chance Chol comes in imo. I'm still going with no change unless there's an injury.

Port and Adelaide supporters absolutely hate each other but unfortunately won't see many at the game so the crowd will be pretty hostile. We need to shut them up early.

They must be really torn then this week. Either barrack for Port or the team that destroyed their club. Massive dilemma for the crow supporters.
Wouldn't mind tipping Crows fans will want us to cut Port off at the knees to keep their 2 flags to 1 dominance over the Kochies.

There is no love lost between these two camps.

Then to repay us for 2017 they probably would like us to get nailed in the GF

Here's my guess...Since Port have 2 rucks at 203cm, we have 1 at 199cm it's very cheeky of Dimma to play mind games with Port about the ruck situation IF he has no intention of playing Chol. He knows Chol would have been flat after his Brissy game and Dimma has seen him play much better. Dimma knows his players and, heaven forbid, we may still need him so it builds up Chol's self esteem to be referred to as 'in the mix' for this week, just for ruck duties. Same for Caddy, etc.

Most of us believe that Chol 200cm should only come in if Nank can't play but the MC will have considered these important questions...
- What if something happens to Nank early in the game?
- Can Balta/Broad/Astbury/Lynch do most of the ruck work against 2 giants?
- Even if Nank stays fit, do we need 2 giants to match theirs?
If you were on MC how would you answer those Q's?

How much importance does Dimma place on our previous game v Port, Aug. 8? We had Soldo, Chol, Lynch and Riewoldt all in. (Nankervis inj)
Dimma remembers Chol had at least one passage of good play but he did not have an impact in the ruck., only 7 HO, Soldo 29, Lycett 16, Ladhams 11.

From the Match Report Aug 8, 1st qtr (https://www.richmondfc.com.au/matches/2831#match-report) ...
"Mabior Chol then ignited his side. As Derek Eggmolesse-Smith streamed off the half-back line and looked up the field, he saw Chol tracking back towards Richmond’s goal on the far wing, Eggmolesse-Smith drove the ball in his path. Chol sets his eyes on the ball, spoiled it back with the flight then sprinted after it. The athletic Tiger then tapped and scrapped the ball through half-forward, took the contact from a Port defender, tapped the ball inside 50, pick it up, took the brunt of a tackle then dished off the handball to Jack Riewoldt who snapped his first major. It was one of the best passages of play for 2020 and showcased the traits and tricks that Chol has in his arsenal."

Astbury had his knee heavily bandaged so how was his agility and spoiling v Saints? And did he pull up ok? How well did he train this week?
If Chol is IN and Astbury OUT then Broad could take Astbury's role in BP. Then Nank and Chol interchange ruck duties off the bench?
We don't have spies at training so how do we know if that's possible?

Most decisions have some element of risk/reward and this is another one.

I dunno. Given the way they were embarrassed in 2017, they should want us to win the lot so they can at least say they got beaten by an all-time great team.

Hardwick is just trying to talk up Chol's trade value.

Jack just said while discussing match ups up forward ,

with myself lynch and perhaps Marbz up there ,

would he drop that name if he wasn’t seriously in the frame ?

Heard the interview.
Will post it later once it’s available for others to listen.
Still not convinced as Jack didn’t convince me either way.

What pricked my ears was and in some small way if we are to go with Chol, “Chol is an impact player with his follow up work when in the ruck”. Words to that effect.

If they were to go with Chol, it would only be as an ‘impact player’ when their ruck changes to give Nank a rest. You would really have to have ‘confidence’ that he can deliver this as this is it. Spot in a GF. No second chance.

I still have concerns with their match ups if they go tall there.

Landhams- Balta
Dixon- Astbury
Marshall - Broad ( he has to play if all three play)

Our next 4 backs to take care of their medium & smalls.

Grimes ( dangerous small )
Nick ( interceptor )
Short
Baker boy
Houli Douli ( sweeper - distributor )

So it depends on their selections in my eyes as I don’t think Nank can ruck all game.

Astbury - no way should be rucking with his knee issues

Balta - depending on their selections could still be an option. Does he get first crack at Dixon? Redemption. Or does Astbury go to him. Strength wise a good match up but Dixon on a lead poses a problem if he gets his tail up.

Against Port in Aug. we had 2 rucks - Soldo & Chol (with Jack, Lynch, Balta) so Nank takes Soldo's place. Since Astbury's knee is heavily bandaged he might not tame the gorillas so Broad fills his spot. Certainly worth considering even if only for insurance if Nank goes down. Too late to experiment with Miller. Who else?

I think it will be no change, but I'm concerned about Astbury's knee, was surprised to see him in the ruck, given is knee history. Do we know how he has pulled up? As for Chol, I think he's a talented player, but clearly can't handle the pressure at the moment, needs more matches under his belt. I don't think he feels as though he belongs just yet.

Having said all of that, I've always been a fan of the 'surprise move' like when Hafey would put Billy Barrott at full-forward, that kind of stuff. So Astbury out Chol in plays a blinder on Dixon!!

Alot of focus on Ports rucks Stanley did the job on them both won the hit outs last game so why can't Nank do it coming off a great game last week against Marshall with a chop out.

I liked the balance with Broad back in last week.

Would be a risk though against 2 very tall ruckman to go in with only 1 ourselves. Can Chol bring more value & balance to the team then playing with a 2nd string relief ruck as per last week. Can't allow Port to dominate clearances with their strong midfield though. But even last time with Soldo & Chol we were smashed, but that more came down to Cotchin ,Prestia ,Edwards, Graham etc missing.

Glad i'm not on the selection panel with a player like Caddy waiting in the wings on top of the ruck situation.

Maybe Balta just plays on Ladhams? When he's forward, Balta on him as a defender, and follows him in to the middle when he goes in to the ruck. Nank resting forward would give Port defenders the same headaches as Lycett resting forward gives ours, both defences would be stretched for height. Just have to back our mids in

We can match their midfield - so Talls are the key to the match.
