Changes v Mutts

Markov, Balta ,Egg, Stack, Pickett, Aarts ,Chol, Ross, Soldo have a total of 122 games an average of 13 games. Only two have won a Premiership. Rioli & Graham have two each & get the chop. How strong are the Tigers then ?. Find out tomorrow night will we not.

The dogs are a bit of a yo yo side. The fact they won last week is good for us.

But Vlastuin out is gonna make it much harder. We don't have a natural replacement for the role he plays.

Hoping Ross is played in his correct position and both he and Stack can step up and cement their spots in the team as they show some talent

It’ll take an inspired performance to get it done tomorrow night, as the dogs have been playing pretty well.

No Edwards, Nank, Houli, Ashbury or Vlastuin.

And the question marks over Stack’s ability to slot back in and make an immediate impact, and whether Markov will cut the mustard on the big stage in a crucial game!?

Not to mention the diabolical entries into an out of form and misfiring forward line.

It feels a bit like we’re rolling out out of the pits with a space saver tire on the front right; loose wheel nuts on the front left and an untested new compound on the rear right, and are hoping it’s just gonna be a smooth run and hang together in the straight somehow.

After reading all the interesting and mostly thoughtful posts here, I'm still trying to figure out how this team is going to work. My ideas are just what come to mind with these selections against this opposition but there are conundrums with such a weakened side:
  1. Soldo should and must crash in and crunch English at CBs to enable us to at least get close to equalise these clearances opposed to the Dogs hot midfield team. They just gather so many possessions around the stoppages that they can win the game right there. English will out-run Ivan around the ground though and could take marks over our depleted, short backline. Chol to go with him often then. Thank gawd Cotch is back.
  2. We cannot replace V1. But agree with trying Balta if Broad can handle Bruce. Pros - Balts is a promising, strong intercept mark; brave and hard at it; reads the game well for a youngster and disposes of the ball very well. Cons - Bruce 197cm v. Broad 192. If the struggling Bruce turns into Aaron Naughton 2019 suddenly, then Balts might have to go to him as our biggest backman. [Or try Grimesy? Then who watches Bont moving forward?]
  3. Grimesy to take Wallis or anyone else until the Bont comes forward. He is so good in the air and in attack, got to have a top, tall back for him
  4. Egg and Short in charge of other SFs like Lloydy - should be motivation there for either of them.
  5. I like Baker down back as our spare/sweeper but I want him forward this game to curb Daniels who is their amazing tiny quarterback. He gets them out of trouble, intercepts and delivers to the best option nearly every time. We have to put effort into him. Baker will keep him occupied and maybe even work off him to score. Otherwise, if we have to keep Bakes in defence, Aarts must go to Daniels
  6. I think/hope Markov is in to take their other key driving force off HB and counter-attacker in Johanissen. There's a team - maybe the Skunks - who always play a lockdown on him which works a treat. Recommend we do same. Obviously, like Baker, Markov to match him for speed, chase and tackle plus run off him for offfence when he shows no respect. Overall, Oleg to inject another fast-leading, marking target into our attack too
  7. So who bolsters the defence without Floss? I think they might try Ross initially (on this Vandermeer guy I really know nothing about). The training in defence should assist. (Sure, I want him to go into the midfield too, but we have a further depleted BL)
  8. Think the selectors have gone for flexibility: if Ross fails, Markov can be tried, if he fails, Stack will have to go back
  9. The team announcement says Stack to play midfield which is best planning option. He might be tried on Smith etc. but we need his pace, attack on the ball and opp, along with his attacking abilties/delivery
  10. I don't think we have anyone who can really stop the Bont but expect the captain will take on the responsibilty in the middle; because that's what he does.
Overall, as others commented, was not that impressed by the Dogs who could/should have been beaten by a fairly inexperienced GCS side. We can, should, must get over them. But if we let someone do a Toby Greene on us, forget it.
If a few in our FL just wouldn't mind breaking away on a good lead, creating separation (just look at how WCE undid the vaunted skunks' defence), holding their marks and converting their opportunities, it would make a huge difference. And some pressure from our SFs that creates goals would come in handy too.

We look weaker than last week.

Really? I looked at the team and thought wow we look so much better, bar Floss of course.
Cotchin the bull with more skill and pace than graham.
Stack quicker and harder at the contest than Rioli
Ross provides another midfield option.

Markov was our best at halfback in the scratch match, but hope he plays as a lead up forward using his pace.
His selection brings flexibility.

Naish and Rioli were bordering on useless. Graham not far behind with 6 possies and let's face it he is superslow. I reckon that was one reason he wasn't selected as the dogs are a fast hard-running side.

Very astute, Astute. Beating the doggies, it's all about curbing their run and speed of ball movement. Intercept or force turnovers, then catch them out of position and score on the counter-attack.

Good summation. Plenty of alternative options. Our record against dogs of late is meaningless as like North its always at Marvel. I'm not 100% sold on the dogs but with our 7 players out it will be tough. But we have shown we play both Gabba and Metricon well, call it intuition but I reckon the boys will come out firing as they did against North.
In saying that, we do need the forward line to fire. One of Lynch or Jack needs to have a big game.

Apart from our kicking at goals thought with the personnel we did well against GWS on their home deck. 6 14 50 (20m scoring shots) aint gonna win many games, then u look at west coast and they had 21 scoring shots for 18 goals.

This, and better delivery into F50.

Definitely. Tried to reference this in my point 9 on Stack who I reckon has better delivery and pace to both get the ball and break away, than Graham (out) and Ross (in). That's why I'm thinking Ross to fill in on the HBF to cover V1's absence for now.
But we have to stop or at least greatly reduce the constant long bombs.

Exactly, Astute. Even the Aints kicked 12.1 to give the rabid Poort fans a rude awakening to reality. The Saints - formerly renowned for their profligate inaccuracy. And like our game, their opposition actually had more shots on goal (although not sure on how many rushed).
The Saints are a Richmond clone side in many ways, except their fast ball movement is being rewarded by plenty of goal shots from the corridor well within range - like we used to get !
But they value winning in the air and have recruited good marking/intercept players. As well as valuing speed - like the gift of Butler.

Anyway, we need to get our act together tonight.
