Changes v Dees

For me, this is Mini's first misstep as coach.

If we line up as suggested, we have lost this game at selection.

It's cliche, but in sport you gotta risk it to get the biscuit..

We cannot win playing the same style and personnel as last week. Cumberland needed to come in. Pickett needed a change of position or to be dropped. Coulthard needed to play. And if not Balta forward, then Ryan.

That forward line cannot deliver a winning score against quality opposition.

It's a shame. We needed this win for top 4.
Top 4? Us?

Whilst I agree with you regarding selection, we haven't lost the game just yet.

Please, can we give up on the Balta forward rubbish. He's clearly a better defender. Has tried and failed at AFL level, or at least not succeeded.
I agree I'd have put Cumberland in, but I wouldn't move Balta. Our back 6 is doing pretty well as a unit. Don't unsettle it.

You are joking about wanting Coulthard to play a full game? He would be monstered by the Melbourne side if he started at the first bounce. He’s value at the moment is to come on as an explosive sub sometime in the 2nd half.

Looking forward to seeing how the Tigers perform in this big game.

He only did it for a little, as a young player, and kicked 4 in a game once, as I remember.

But that's not the point.

The point is that we need a marking target forward, or a Lever and May will just the blanket the air. He doesn't need to turn it on. He needs to negate their strength.

We have exactly one tall who can reliably take a contested mark at the moment, and it's Balta.

I'm not advocating for him to be a forward. Just to play on their best aerialists for this game. Which is not Petty and Van Noone.
Grimes, Vlossy and Young can handle them.
He won't beat Lever as a forward particularly without any recent experience in the position. Let's see what happens. I'd be very surprised if our best backman Balta plays the game as a forward.

Yes, but losing with a settled back 6 is still losing.

Me too.

He won't.

But we've gone in with no forwards. Cumberland and Ryan were options. Not taken.

Top 4? Us?
It was a possibility.

But stupid bloody Collingwood deciding to suck tonight means that it isn't anymore.

Unless Carlton happen to lose to St Kilda next week, or maybe GWS. So yeah... We're still on!

No matter what changes may have occurred, Balta forward was/is never going to be one of them.

Cartoon's turn around in form pretty much means we need to win 4 of the remaining 5 to have any chance of playing finals. Yeah nah.

I’ll keep my powder dry for now but I thought our forward line was absolutely shocking last week & the week before despite the victories against lowly opponents. Here’s hoping the consistency of selection pays off.

I have GWS and Saints going out, Blues and Tigers going in (providing we keep winning). Cats are 50/50 to make the 8.

I have GWS & Geecheat making it and us/Aints out. Both probably got it wrong, nothing ever works out the way you anticipate it to even with few games left.

Melbourne forward line interesting.
Ben brown out and a balance of mobile runners.

1 tall. A 2nd year JVR.
Melksham.
Kosi Pickett (part small part floating mid)
Petracca will play deep at times.
And Petty as a poor mans Miller.

Small forward line but not overly fast.
What role does Young play?
Grimes, Broad, Flossy and Balta will cover this.
I'd be very tempted to drop Young out, let Balta go head2head against Van Rooyen, and bring in a runner. (actually I'd bring in Cumbo and let team balance go to hell)

It was/is an option.

It would be a stupid coach who isn't willing to entertain all of their options.

Other options (perhaps more likely and better ones) include Cumbo, or even Ryan as a target.

I've liked everything mini has done to date.

This week's selections are Hardwick level conservative, and to me it seems we are conserving a style of play that can't win the game.

When we lose, mini can fall back on the excuse of selecting the unchanged winners.

But when you're challenging from this far back, you need to take some big swings.

Team selection was weak this week and playing it too safe. Forward line is pathetic and needs work.

Very surprised with that team selection.
This is the side that struggled for 3/4's against the 3rd. lowest team in the comp. to then win by only 1 point.
Hard to see us competing against one of the best teams in the league right now, with hardly any forwards of note.
Miracles do happen though, like last night, the Mudpies going down to the Blue boys.

These are the umpires for our game.
What do you know about them?
Daniel Johanson (6), Mathew Nicholls (15), Nathan Toner (25), Andre Gianfagna (27)

I hope they dont typecast Matty C as a sub specialist after last week.

Small forward line and Lever and May will get 20 intercept marks between em if they play dumb dump kick into 50.

They play Shai forward to cover for a lack of small forwards, then we lose his influence in the middle.
He basically got 7 touches and a good dose of pressure in a quarter on debut. He deserves a full game on that effort.

Obviously Short was never going to be in the team for Sunday, and with a short turnaround “five day break” We play the dogs next Friday night he’ll be in for sure for that game.
That statement is wrong @AstuteTiger Shorty and Club fully intended and planned for him to play this week.
ps Issue couldn't have occured at Captain's Run though as that was this morning
