Changes for Round 4

These changes becoming a little too predictable and putting us behind the 8 ball without a ball bounced. Dogs are a small quick team but we bring in another tall defender when they hardly have a tall target. Need to also start rewarding form in the 2s. Mansell should have come in.

Would be interesting to know the real condition of The Bont's shoulder.
He was heavily strapped in the training vision.
A lethal crash tackle by Nank could put The Bont out for a couple of weeks.
Remember Nank laid a crushing tackle on Zaharakis, some years back, his shoulder popped out.
Marlion is another bloke Bont might want to give some space to

Good to see back to one ruck. A positive.

Like others thought we already had enough height in defence (with Balta in reserve) to play Mansell over Miller.

Anyway, let's see what we bring.

Still reckon we win this. Big mids are our kryptonite, we just don't have the size to match them i.e. Cripps and Steele.

Dogs are midgets like us in there. Match them there we win (like last year).

Huh?

Cotch 185cm - dunk 191cm
Prestia 175cm - j McRae 191cm
T dow 181cm - bont 193cm
Bolt 175cm - b Smith 185cm

In: Prestia, Riewoldt, Miller, Sonsie
Out: Grimes, Soldo, Ross, Hugo, Aarts

B: Gibcus Tarrant Miller
HB: Short Broad Rioli
C: Pickett Dow McIntosh
HF: Bolton Balta Parker
F: Riewoldt Lynch Castagna
R: Nankervis Cotchin Prestia
I: Edwards Graham Baker Sonsie
Sub: Ralphsmith

Edwards into the defensive rotation.
Shedda back would be a smart move.
Get experience where we need it and give him the ball to regain form

Fair call Gaz.

Should have said in size/aggression to what we will face.

McRae is big in measurement only (very outside) and Bont is patched up and will play forward.

They are bigger than what Leysy thought.

In both of our losses the trend was the same . For a while we won centre clearances and held our own in clearances around the ground and we got enough ball to be in front. Both games turned when we lost control of clearances, quite dramatically in both cases.
If that happens again we are toast against the Dogs as well. I would have brought in another mid, probably Sonsie or even RCD, and not replaced Grimes with Miller.
We have to break even at worst around the ball.

While replying to your post, I realised something that I hadn't realised before.

There's a linear series of situations to limit the oppo's ability to score:

A -> B -> C -> D

A is clearance
B is midfield pressure
C is defensive structure
D is marking contest in D50

If you solve A, then you don't need to worry as much about B, C, or D.

In general, I think most clubs tend to gravitate towards solving A first. It feels right.

But what fascinates me is at our dominant best, we've been poor in A but still dominant in B, C, and D.

And the more I think about it...

It's much better to be dominant at B, C, and D instead of A.

If you accept you can't be perfect in all areas, then you have to embrace 1 least desirable strength.

In B, C, and D conditions the opposition's defence is not setup. That means when you succeed at winning back the ball in B, C, and D conditions, you'll be attacking with more space and time, so you'll find it easier to score.

Condition A is the only condition with an opposition defence that's fully setup and mentally switched on. You'll be attacking with less time and space, so you'll find it more difficult to score.

Therefore, condition A is the least desirable strength to invest in... while also being the most common strength that other clubs invest in.

You still invest in all areas, but sacrifices are required because you can't be perfect, so you need to prioritise your imperfections. In this case, I've reasoned a case for clearances being the lowest priority in a chain of situations that lead to an opposition goal, because it's the only condition in which the opposition's defence is ready.

Should more attention go towards addressing conditions B, C, and D?

By extension, are we trying too hard to solve A by taking a calculated risk with Prestia?

Just putting some late night thoughts out there, I hope it makes sense in the morning lol

Josh, Dow, Hugo and Matt have cemented their positions in the senior team.
Will be hard for a player like RCD to break through.
I saw Ross after round two, looked very forlorn.
He knew he had been mediocre.
Down on confidence, he can regain it in the VFL.

Good to see Prestia straight back.

He is a footballer - no cotton wool, sink or swim.

My main concern is our forward line. Lynch looks cumbersome, slow and dumb at the moment. Jack is as slow as a wet week.

The doggies back six ain’t much chop but I can see us getting a mess of inside 50s for little return.

Still, and strangely enough, we seem to match up well against these jokers.

I won’t argue with 2-2 with Grub, Vlastuin and Lambert still to come.

Oh and if someone could smack Cody Weightman in the mush that’d be good too

Lost it at the selection table.
That would be 3 out 4 games this year.
Nakas & Graham not fit for round 1
Grimes injured going into round 3
And now playing 'The land of the Giants' defence against the smurfs.
Makes sense. They must have drinks on selection nights.

No schache or west is a huge concern for us

Strong chance that somebody won’t do that but he’ll still hit the ground like they did.

Maybe our taller team will give them trouble with match ups. We can't always be picking a team to counter the opposition's team, sometimes we can pick a team to try and force them to counter our team.
