captain next year ???

Lets just hope he's the player we need.
Have no doubts about that. More worried that we may lose him.

As DD has said on numerous occassons, Lids and Wallace did no see eye to eye.

With a coach who sticks to his word and gives direction I think he wil be a real superstar. Only worry is how he will handle a "very close" tag. Hopefully with Cuz and Cotch working with and for each other we can develop a HUGE midfield presence.

2 Jack Dyers in a row wouldn't be considered "earning it"?

Absolutely not, winning 2 Jack Dyers right now in a row, just means that the best player amongst a rotten playing list got the award. Making Delidio, Captain next year, no thanks, he has to improve even more and become what his Number 1 Draft Pick was all about. Delidio has admitted that he's been slack in the past, the chat with Rawlings must have shaken him up and if anything Rawlings has possibly done him a big favour. With a new coach in Hardwick, a clean out of the football department staff particularly Assistant Coaches, Fitness and Psychology Staff, Delidio may now start to develop into the player that we all know he can become.
The Captaincy should be offered to him as an incentive to improve dramatically in the forthcoming season, if he can do that then I'd consider him for 2011, with young Cotchin as VC in 2011 or 2012.

Its up to Brett if he wants to become Captain he will have to work for it, no one else is going to give it to him on a plate.

Which begs the question...."How did Newman EARN it?"

I don't think anyone can answer that one, perhaps Terry Wallace could answer it with his usual SPIN SPIN SPIN and we'd still be all wondering how Newman got it.

According to SEN we may not have to worry about Lids as skipper. They claim talks have broken down.

How accurate and where they get their info from I do not know.

I am a bit old fashion and reckon a captain should lead on field by example and slot the goals when they are needed, get a crucial centre clearance through sheer will and determination and generally inspire those around him to lift. Michael Voss is my ultimate example of this. He was so predictable. Last qtr and the lions were 5 points down, he would just bulldoze the centre scrum, wrench the ball out and boot a goal from 55. I watched him do this time and time again. Inspiring the team with skill, will, determination and poise under pressure.

Who is the bloke on our list most likely to be able to eminate these characteristics? I say Lids. He has shown this year how hard he works in the most dire of situations. Against the Pies flogging, he kept trying his guts out and demonstrating polish under pressure until the end. Newy is just a good player. Give Lids the cap now and by 25, he is at the height of his powers, comfortable in the role, and ready to inspire a little like Vossy.

So is tomorrow's Lids last game for the club? If he wants to leave and his heart isn't in the RFC guernsey anymore he can get stuffed for all I care, as long as we're compensated appropriately.

Must be given to Cuz for 1/2 years until Lids/Cotch/Bling steps up. The guy is leading the team already should make it official.

According to Greg Denham we are now working on it as our top priority.

No need to flip out just yet, there are far more articles around saying Lids will sign in the next couple of weeks

I'd stick with Newman who I think has performed well in a tough year. Cousins & Richo will hopefully continue to provide leadership and support for Newman and the younger players on field and behind the scenes, their role doesn't need to be official. Delidio, Cotchin, Tambling and Foley should be told that one of them will be taking over in a year or two when Newman steps down, giving them the challenge to show why they deserve the job.

Make Lids earn it. If he can consistently play both ways next season without a kick up the bum, then it is his the following season.

I agree. He has shown brilliance in some games and is getting better at his defensive aspects of his games. I think he could make a very good captain on day.
I think Newman has had a tough first year as captain. Next year will be a better season if he is captain still. But who knows if Hardwick wants to pick his own captain.

just coz lids is a good player, doesnt mean he will be a good captain, or that he is even a leader.

Newman is just a puppet on a string, which is being pulled by Cousins.

Job must go to Deludio, not someone who has had 1 BOG in 10 years!!! DUD!!!

1? gee thats being generous in newman. are you related to him? :hihi

Look at Tom Harley...premiership captain and by no means in Geelong's elite players nor do the public have 'respect' for hin yet he has the respect of his peers

i actually reckon thats a very harsh call on harley. harley is twice the footballer newman is. 2008 all australian vice captain says it all
