I really can't remember a time when we haven't had three or four potential captains. This is a really bad indicator and maybe Hardwick's first big task with his new group......to develop leadership qualities.
I think in negotiations with Deledio's new contract, capataincy will be mentioned - whether Brett wants the job is another matter. His form warrants the position in my opinion, both in terms of workrate and sheer class.
I also believe Cousins will be a valuable mentor in Deledio's evolution, possibly in the hope Brett will grow into a role similar to Chris Judd. Recreating such a partnership maybe pie in the sky thinking yet with some luck we may just strike it lucky in the upcoming draft and go some way to completing our own top shelf quartet - Vickery, Cousins, Deledio and pick 3.

i believe with a new coach being appointed, all leadership positions should be thrown open and have the players fight over it over the pre-season... it's just one way to make them more competitive. i also believe the skipper should be the coaches call.

Captains are allowed to have assistance from other experienced leaders too. Just because he's captain does not mean that Cuz can't share his insight into situations he deems he has knowledge to share. It's precisely one of the reasons why we drafted him. Noone knows what Newman is like behind closed doors.
Look at Tom Harley...premiership captain and by no means in Geelong's elite players nor do the public have 'respect' for hin yet he has the respect of his peers which im sure Newy does and in a team that's all that's required from a captain. Let the bloke learn, this year has been diabolical and by no means is it his fault for our performances.
It's too late now but have you sat back at a game and kept an eye on Newman for 10 minutes straight? He does things that you would expect a captain to do....he goes when it's his time to go, backs into packs and directs traffic. It's not his fault that he's captain of a club that has an abundance of poor players which he has to lead in and out each week. Don't make Newy 2009's scapegoat.
I'd be staggered if they took it off Newman. He's had a tough year and while I've been a critic, he deserves a more settled year to see how he goes.
Newy has had a tough year and may be in for a tougher one in 2010.
Not certain he can be assured a spot in our best 22 going forward. As someone said, 1 BOG in ??years and hardly an inspiration on the field.
Lids on the other hand can inspire and strikes me as someone, who if given the leader role, will change his mindset and he will become the onfield leader we badly need.
Cotch, if he can shakes injuries, looks even more likely as a leader but he needs to sort his body out first and put in a couple of solid consistant seasons.
