Captain Blood is dead

My earliest memories of Jack were his radio calls on 3KZ

The crowds are roaring
The Big Men Jump
Push in the Back, oh come on ump!
Ian Majors and Captain Blood
For footy we're way ahead
That's Melbourne 3KZ

Through the years i've read heaps about him, and heaps that he's written. I'm trying to dig up one article written in the very early 60's about Jack Dyer.

It leaves you in no doubt about his ability as a footballer. This columnist put Jack ahead of any footballer to have played the game and backed it up with a lot of facts now forgotten by time. If i can find it, i will post it up.

Bear in mind this was written before time could grow the legend. A mere decade after his retirement.

Go easy on'em up there Jack.

Now it's truly the field of dreams.

in the pulse section in todays herald sun, they had the top 10 dyer quotes...

1. If you don't mind, umpire
2. Euthanasia: They're the same as the youth here
3. On whether marijuana should be legalised: I've got no comment on spaghetti marinara
4. Son, tell me your height, weight, and how tall you are
5. He's a good ordinary footballer (on Carlton's Peter Bosutow)
6. Bamblett(Melbourne's Les Bamblett) made a great debut today and an even better one last week
7. I hate Collingwood so much I won't even watch a black and white television (<---i particulary like that one!)
8. He's loping around the wing like a giant tarantulope
9. Bartlett is older than he's ever been before
10. I won't say anything in case i say something.

Jack, i never had the pleasure of watching you play, even watching you on Wide World of Sports, but to me you are THE true champion of Richmond. You are invincible. An immortal.

R.I.P CAPTAIN BLOOD

To the Dyer family my sympathies.

To Jack 'Captain Blood' Dyer. Thanks for giving Richmond everything. We love you and we will miss you passion.

My favourite Cap'n Blood saying.....

"Champagne Football"

Rest In Peace Jack.

You know, you don't need to see a footballer to know how good he was. And you don't even need to know a man to know how great he is. You only have to hear the way people speak of him to know all of that.

So in listening to people and reading books and articles over the years, it became easy to admire Jack Dyer. Even though I didn't know him and never saw him play, I just know he was a great footballer and a truly great and wonderful man.

For one thing, it was easy to admire and be taken in by his endearing nature. His strength of character and the Legend that became 'Captain Blood' have withstood the test of time. And through the many decades, he maintained the respect and admiration he gained as a player, coach and media personality.

When you read and hear about Jack Dyer, it's easy to admire the sort of courage, toughness, resilience and eat 'em alive spirit he showed as a player.

Great men inspire greatness in others. And no one inspired our football Club like 'Captain Blood' Jack Dyer. His very spirit lives within the Richmond Football Club

On the football battle fields, you wore the Richmond jumper with pride and brought pride to it. You had the ability to restore order and right wrongs. Always tough and in true football and Aussie spirit, the mighty Tigers were always hard to beat with you on our side. So when you now take your place alongside the other footy Gods, we know that the Jack Dyer spirit will keep things even for us.

Send our regards to the other Tiger men. Tell them how we miss them and that their spirit lives on.

Jack Dyer is the reason we love Richmond so much and why it means so much to so many. You some how come to be in awe of the larger than life courage, character and eat 'em alive spirit he displayed. So it is no surprise that, all those life times ago and at a time when people needed heroes, Jack Dyer provided inspiration to many.

And even though some of us can only imagine the past deeds and glories, no words can express the gratitude felt for the immense joy, pride and inspiration Jack Dyer brought to generations of Richmond supporters and how still today he lifts our spirits, fill us with pride and allow us to walk that much taller.

So you see, it's easy to admire Jack Dyer - a truly wonderful man.

And, in true Richmond spirit, we honour and pay tribute to a club immortal for his immeasurable contribution to our football club, our great game of Australian rules football and especially our lives.

'CAPTAIN BLOOD' JACK DYER, your spirit lives on forever, because to us, you are a hero, a legend and immortal.

So many wonerful things have been written and said during the last few days, that I am lost for words, and somewhat overwhelmed.
I cried when I heard the news on Saturday, and I will cry again at the game this Sunday. Just as I cried when Teddy did his final lap at the 'G'.

Thanks Jack.

R.I.P.

Jack Dyer epitomises everything good in life. He played hard yet fair on the field and off the field. His humour made us all laugh. His courage inspired everyone you saw him play. Captain Blood is more than the greatest Tiger or a football legend. He has been and always will be an inspiration. I know that I feel like I have lost a member of my own family and my deepest sympathies go out to all of the Dyer family. I'm sure that when he reaches the pearly gates on judgement day he'll have no need to utter his immortal line "If you dont mind umpire".

Thanks you Jack for all that you gave us over such a long period of time. A getleman who will be fondly remembered and sadly missed. May you rest in peace.

If anybody else wants to include a tribute I'll print them and send them in a card over the weekend.
If you don't want your message included please PM me, if not I'll assume I have permission. :)
