Callum Coleman-Judas - extricate yourself to Nth Ballarat, you git

This is an interesting one. I’ve often wondered why they don’t take extra time in developing the skinny kids with more work in gym and on the training track in their first year on the list and less games/game time.

This could well be the way if the future with more individualised plans for first year players. Really focus on getting them physically ready to play against mature footballers.

Had knee surgery last August.

An "Draftee watch" on 22/01/18 said that he was batting knee and Achilles soreness. Sensible to manage him if that's what's happening.

This is exactly what they are doing. They are concentrating on getting his physical side right first. He won’t play seniors and only part of the VFL season.

Not really concerned with game time at the moment with CCj , Happy for him to even not play a game this year and just work on his fitness, speed and build up his frame as well as be ultra conservative with his knee injury he suffered last year.

Still only 18 years old and 200cm 97kgs - He is a long term player that needs to be looked after well and given 3 years good development similar to the way Carlton and North have done with the Mckay boys

Development coach Ryan Ferguson was a guest speaker at 3121 before the Brisbane game. On CCJ he said we probably won't be seeing a lot of him as 2018 will be more about building him up and getting conditioning into to him for 2019, ie blocks of training and then maybe a game here or there and then more blocks? Sounds like progressive forward thinking man management with a view to the future.

Makes some sense that some 18 year olds of a certain body type may require an individualized program.

Other posters might be able to expand? but don't expect too much this year.
Could be being held out to cover for injuries in VFL? that's a surprising plan to me i have to admit.

So this. Yeah it’s no rush.

Coleman-Jones made a few very classy cameos in the preseason. Smart footballer. Quick-thinking. Orthodox but creative. A very Richmond selection.

Oh how times have changed. Once upon a times a Richmond selection was a skinny flanker that picked up 12 touches a game but had undeveloped X factor

Gotta love our progressive forward thinking.

Hopefully other clubs don’t copy our model of not expecting 18yo ruck prospects to play senior football right away.

Balta not getting the progressive treatment by the sounds of it, but he’ll still make it IMO :p

They were still interested enough to grab him after Higgins and before Balta.

Oh how times have changed. Once upon a time a Richmond selection was moaned about if they weren't at least starring in the VFL by now, let alone "rested" for a year, and the knives were out for the recruiters.

Yes, times have changed since we drafted 18 year old Andrew Browne as a rookie ruckman, Wallace called him the messiah and through him under the bus by playing him in round one against Carlton.

That seems to be incredibly conservative, almost unprecedented. We are doing a Ben Simmons!

Malcolm Blight made a good point on most clubs depth, he said something like even the best sides would only have about 27 players that they could confidently call upon that is near AFL standard. He said it is RIDICULOUS that 18 year kids that are drafted are immediately called AFL footballers as in reality the majority are a mile off it.

Patience required on all draftee's not many will impact at all in 1st or 2nd year.
