I've just gotten home from Jack Dyers funeral and thought I'd quickly post so you could all get a feel for what went on.

I got to the church at about 9.20 this morning so that I could go inside. I got seats about 7 rows back from the front, and slightly to the right. The main thing was, I could see Jack's coffin with the Tiger Skin and head on it. Looked fantastic. I was also in view of a large painting of Jack Dyer from his playing days, as well as the pedestal where people would speak.

I was in a fantasy land, as I watched all the legends of the game, from Richmond, and also other clubs, all become one for today, shaking hands and reminising on days that have past, as well as talking of Jack's tales.

Such people that were there, were the current Richmond senior list, coaching staff and admin, past palyers such as Francis Bourke, Neville Crowe, Matty Knights, Paul Broderick, Chris Naish, Disco Roach, Bruce Monteath, Tony Jewell, Lou Richards, Ron Reiffel, *smile* Reynolds, Dale Weightman,as well as former staff by the likes of Leon Daphne, and The Geish himself. Also present was none other than Eddie McGuire. I usually hate Eddie but I applaude him today as I'm sure he recognises the importance of Jack in regards to his own position these days in the media.

I'm sure others like Sheedy, Hafey, Benny gale, Royce hart etc were there but the church was crammed so I couldn't see them.

I will also mention this, that a lot of the players were visually upset. In particular, the ones I sat near who I see cleary and were emotional were Roden, Stafford, Coughlan, Campbell, Richo, Andrew kellaway, Pettifer, and even Rory Hilton. I cannot comment on others because i could not see them. So it would be wrong for me to pressume anything.

The service was wonderful. The highlight for me was the speaches by kevin Bartlett and Bobby Davis. These two spoke so well given the circumstances. I really admire Kevin for coming back to the club, albeit in a way that he has. Doubt he will be back at Punt Road this afternoon, although this could be his perfect opportuntiy.

Anyway, I was so proud to be there. One of the songs that brought me to tears was Wind beneath My Wings by Bette Midler. The players looked very upset during this, and then it had a domino effect.

Jack was carried out of the church to Tigerland being played over the organ, and was then cheered as he was driven away fro the last time. It was excellent for the police to block off Church Street and Swan Street, and I was so very proud to be Richmond Supporter. I will be going to Punt Road this afternoon now, and I will join with the thousands of other people at punt road and celebrate this day, the fantastic life of OUR CAPTAIN BLOOD, JACK DYER.

that sounded like a really sweet service. i'm glad that they had such a fitting tribute to such a great man (i'm at school at the moment, and reading that is making me all tingly!)

its also really nice to read about how our current players reacted at the funeral. even though they didnt have much to do with the great man personally, he plays such an important role in the club, and is a role model to any player that puts on the yellow and black guernsey.

Great report BA. Wish I wasn't interstate... Sad but wonderful day to be a member of the Tiger family.

Thanks for that BA. I saw a snippet on ABC news but that was it. Unfortunately don't have FoxFooty and live interstate.

Anyway, go and celebrate his life now. Go and belt out the theme song, have a drink for him and give him a send off that befits his celtic heritage.

It certainly was beautiful. I have just got back myself.

Touching, funny, moving and sad. But I am so glad Iwas able to get there.

Agree BalmyArmy - I too am very proud to be a Richmond person today. Actually that should probably read "proud to be part of the Richmond Family today.

My thanks to the Dyer family for letting all of us be part of it.

You are spot on about some of the players too. I saw Richo coming into the church you could see the emotion.

I walked with some of the players as I went back to my car. I spoke to one (who I shall not name) and I could tell he now has a greater appreciation of what the RFC is all about.

KB's eulogy was fantastic as was Bob Davis'. ...

"Jack Dyer loved football and we loved Jack Dyer" about summed it up for me - thanks KB

Thankyou BalmyArmy & Koalalill......

That all sounded so beautiful......it made me cry, just reading about it......

Luv ya Jack, Luv ya Richmond....you've made us all so proud!

It sounds like a fitting tribute. Thanks for this post from all of us who couldn't be there in person.

Thanks for the personal account BalmyArmy and koalalill. Despite the loss of such an icon it would gladden us all that he was given the respect and adultion that was befitting of his statue.

Well done richmond in sending of captain Blood... im sure he'd be looking down with tear in his eye.

You can name the player Lil.

Thank you for your synopsis aswell.

Sorry - Shawry - I wont name the player because it was a private conversation between the 2 of us and I do not want this thread turning into a bashing session of some of our current players.

This thread should be a bashing/troll free thread IMHO

I really hope KB does go back to the club. I think this is one day all differences should be put aside and stand united for the love of this great man and for the love of the club.

Agree re bashing/troll free thread.

Fair enough.

Anyone know if the service wil lbe replayed on Fox Footy?

Agree also Walstar, could be the remaking of the club despite it being such a sad occasion.

I thought the image in this article from the age was very symbolic and emotive

http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/articles/2003/08/26/1061663793972.html

The dark stormy clouds, sadness. But after the sadness is a beautiful bright rainbow, happiness as we remember Jack, a new beginning.

i was there just got home from punt road great too see guys like nighter, naishy and bondy at the club, when the song was sung and the balloons went up i felt that lump in the throut and in all a great effort and great too see a good turn up from the yellow and black supporters

Terrific reports Balmyarmy and KL. Thanks for that.

They played snippets from KB and Bobby Davis on 3AW. Agree KL both were fantastic.

BA and KL,

Thanks so much for that. I had a lump in my throat reading your account of the service.

Once again thanks Cap'n!!
