Ball movement i50..

well put TOTty.

Back when I had a Queensland visa, my eyes were telling me Higlets Half Forward Rover role,

and 2 way running was important in countering Bucks Covid Flood

Im not sure where or why he's gone?

I think Dusty standing in the goal square randomly will rattle it too

stick Shorty and Notorious on the wing for brief spells?

like a few posters note, we've lost a bit of the chaos.

lets get back in touch with that. Chaos is hard to control

just ask the chief! We need Gelegie playing Maxwell Smart to Rioli’s 99!

we're not dragging oppo defences out with our forward handballs and surging game like previous years

in part due to the absence of shed's magic hands and prestias gap finding ability which means we're not as effective in penetrating the oppo midfield and have to bomb long.

usually we find ways through the mid scrimmage and surge to the 50 arc dragging the defense out opening things up more.

good post. warranted more than a blue thumb

It is misleading to focus on the number of inside 50s.

The key metric is quality of inside 50s (so entries that are deep and result in a mark or a stoppage). As several posters have pointed out, if the opposition play with one or two spares and play deeper, this negates this.

Two things to address this:

1. The smalls and Chol need to compete better in the air, and bring the ball to ground causing a stoppage. This is an area Castagna has historically been good at, yet has fallen off. Aarts does not appear equipped to do this (his opponent Wil Powell took 7 marks last night).

2. We need to lower our eyes heading inside 50 and spot up leading players. Broad hit Riewoldt with a pass last night that illustrated this perfectly. GC had flooded back, Riewoldt doubled back and led to the ball and the Suns were powerless.

Definitely food for thought for our coaching panel. This needs to be addressed if we are a chance of competing.

So much was reliant on small forwards. Butler is gone, Rioli has been horrible, Bolton is in the midfield, Castagna has got worse by the week, Higgins just ok, Aarts is ok but not a class small forward.
We have also played 3 talls at times in the forward half, one too many imo.
Maybe it’s time to have Caddy play forward again or Markov? Perhaps Baker can play small forward?
Don’t know, lowering the eyes would help.

I’d go LEGO on a HFF

It's a good option as he played a lot as a forward in the vfl last year

I was watching some 2017 highlights for a bit of entertainment on the weekend and I forgot how good Caddy was as a forward that year. Different forward structure of course as it was pre Lynch

Hey @LeeToRainesToRoach bit of a long shot but related to this thread, do you keep stats on the number of free kicks given to each team in the forward 50m? It feels like we can’t buy one there atm.

I haven’t got the numbers, but they didnt pay 4 100% free kick.
*Jack going for mark is pulled back.
*jack going for mark, not only frontal contact but hitting the head of Riewoldt.
*arms around lynch when the balls is kicked into 50. Any other team on this planet would’ve been paid a free kick.
Bolton tackles a GC player, that just drops it. 45 out directly in front.

thats 4 off watching it live on Monday night.
If i sit down again and watch it there would be a few more.

we had 2 forwards with blood coming off there faces, but neither got free kick. Unbelievable.

thats 90% the reason we wont challenge this year. The free kicks that other clubs get we don’t.

We have lost several goals where a player streams through 50 under little or no pressure and instead of taking the shot looks for short pass and stuffs it. Lack of confidence or ability in goal kicking or a robotic mind set that says be a team player. Sometimes the team thing is to take responsibility and kick the goal yourself.

it could be in-grained, but not yet perfected, as part of the bucks Covid flood countering process?

we seem to be *smile* up the sharing from 50 a fair bit?

Dustys cross pass to Kmac. $hai's poor ball.

maybe somethings flashing in their brain, and messing them up?

and maybe it'll click in the next weeks,

and we'll barge through finals like Jona Lomu down a wing?

Agreed .. Bolton probably has most priors but maybe that's unfair because he sticks in mind due to his sidestep and balk which buys him that space. Would elevate him to A grade if he could take those opportunies.
Goal kicking midfielders seem to be a dieing breed right across the league. Even Dustys long range shots could be better...the freak ones aside

L2R2R just replied as I was writing this, as I thought, they don't publish these numbers as far as I can tell.

ToO, want to sit down for a few days and watch the games and find out?

DS

I don't understand game strategy anywhere near as well as others here but for the life of me I cannot understand why we don't kick to space I50. We have great talls that can lead onto balls delivered into defensive holes and speedy smalls who will beat their man to the ball most times.

It's a variation on the chaos ball, I guess. Just get it in there in a way that doesn't allow the opposition to take an easy contested mark.

In the absence of our talls bringing the ball to ground in crowded contests or free kicks being awarded to our forwards, it's all I've got.

Hate to quote myself, but this game was the above in a nutshell.

An inside 50 is utterly worthless if it is to a 3 on 1 which many of ours were tonight.
