Ball movement i50..

This needs to be talked about because more often than not this year it has been a real problem. Fly is our forward's coach. now I rate Fly but it's a bit of an ongoing issue.

I think it's because we don' have enough talent that can hit a target. I watch many other top teams & they seem (at least) to have far better disposers of the football.

That said we are winning games & (flags) regardless more often than not so something's working.
However that was based primarily on our small forwards applying pressure which also seems to have become far less effective this season.

Discuss..

Not sure kicking talent is the problem. I remember the bad old days when we couldn't hit a target coming out of D50, midfield or whereever. Our footskills are much better these days, only a very few in our team are unreliable at this now. Dimma and the list team are pretty good at picking blokes who can kick these days. Dustin, Lambert, Cotch, Shed, Short are all pretty good at finding targets inside 50.

In 2017-19 we were really good at spotting up the big blokes when isolated through quick movement and hitting them on the lead or letting them win the one-on-one contest. This year our ball movement is slower due to oppo tactics and also we have to contend with flooding in the back half. Need to get better at seeing the free blokes near the 50 arc.

Yep, more or less saying what I just said. After Sydney got numbers back we seemed to have been working on a more deliberate forward entry, this was noticeable when we played the Dogs.

We seem to be having a problem with even kicking the ball 40 metres on set shots, let alone 50.

Castagna and McIntosh both failed to make the distance from what should be simple distances last night. Happens quite a bit. They are not the only culprits.

Do they try to steer the ball, rather than kick through it from this distance? Anything can happen when either of those two try to kick the cover off the ball. Maybe they are sacrificing distance for accuracy? And failing at the accuracy bit too!

Is it the humid Queensland air?

Separation, separation, separation.

Don’t be all crowded going for the same ball.

Lower the eyes.

Don’t just blaze away.

Keep leading, leading , leading.

Kick the ball to dangerous spots. Too many times we all reverting to old habits by kicking to the boundary line.

Bring to ground and have a small swoop on it but our smalls are really struggling. Rioli & Castagna.

Of late we get it right and we score within a 15-20 metre range. This year it seems one out of 2-3.

If sides want to flood that means we have spare(s). Look for that player(s).

Only problem when oppositions flood our forward 50 is that our spares (usually Tigga Broad and Grimes and Dave/Noah) just sit back and set up the defensive wall as has always been our way, and what happened against the Swans which we were then pilloried for when it was them wankers who ruined the game.

The viable options need to be the half backs and wingers who push further up into our half forward area.

It is clear that back lines stay deep against us. They don’t care how much we outnumber them by in the middle third of the ground, they are going to outnumber us deep in defence, no matter what.

It makes our games very boring.

Of course, if umpires paid a few free kicks for shepherding in the marking contest in our forward 50 we would win by heaps every week. Not many of our marking players at either end get a chance to fly for marks.

Figgies flood.

To be fair to George his kick was pretty accurate, sailing right through the middle of the goal posts, just it fell short, so if he was sacrificing distance for accuracy then that part worked but still need to kick the distance.

I think we are seeing far more of the flood with weaker opposition than the better sides, teams are flooding back to strangle us and hope to snag a few on the break.

I agree we need to try and pull their defence further up the ground and having better kicks for goal outside 50 should be one tactic. I thought about that as I was watching it last night, last year Short always seemed to be sniffing around the ball carrier just outside 50 but hasn't happened much this year. Its difficult to see on tv, but maybe its happening but he's being manned up. We do need the talls to seperate though, the amount of times yesterday that Lukosius could go up as the 3rd man in front of Lynch or Jack was too many. Its much easier to defend a 3 on 2, than a 2 on 1 and a 1 on 1. We should be targeting the 1 on 1 in that scenario.

That killed me, I did a fist-pump when I saw it was on line, couldn't believe it dropped short.

Yep.
As he lined up i was trying to predict which side of the goal post would it sail through.
Nope, split the middle, "You Ripper" i yelled.
Then see it drop short and marked on the goal line by a GC player..

I went too soon. Should have know better.

To be fair though George is finding new ways to disappoint every week, who can keep up

Exactly the same here!
I really wasn’t expecting a straight kick but then thought Wow he’d finally nailed one
Alas not

Counter intuitive idea. If the plan is to bring the ball to ground in the fwd line - why kick it in the air? As we see it's more likely to be an intercept mark than a forwards mark due to the outnumber. Why not scrub kicks into the forward line along the ground unless there is a clear 1on1? No one would dare, but it might just be crazy enough to work! It is done in other sports like Rugby League.

A few people have mentioned that we got better as GC got more tired.

The shorter quarters don't do our game plan any favours. The response needs to be to tweak the game plan.

Need to mix up our forward 50 entries. Not so easy when the pressure levels in footy are so high these days but a bit of variety from both the mids delivering into F50 and the forwards giving different options.

Aarts will never be a big marking forward, no idea why they kick it to a contested mark when he is about 5'9" or 5'10".

I’ve often wondered why no one tries this. This kind of thing certainly happens in the rugby codes. The conventional thinking is because taller players try to bring the ball to a predictable spot for smaller players to run and gather from. But if you have a mismatch of, say, Rioli and McGovern then a scrubbed kick is preferable IMO. If it happens to get within Jeremy’s reach first, I reckon he’s gonna feel pretty vulnerable taking possession. Dan, however, will feel pretty good about taking possession, and will feel even better after he kicks a goal.

Or even a kick to space where the ball will bounce and a smaller forward could run onto it.

well put TOTty.

Back when I had a Queensland visa, my eyes were telling me Higlets Half Forward Rover role,

and 2 way running was important in countering Bucks Covid Flood

Im not sure where or why he's gone?

I think Dusty standing in the goal square randomly will rattle it too

stick Shorty and Notorious on the wing for brief spells?

like a few posters note, we've lost a bit of the chaos.

lets get back in touch with that. Chaos is hard to control

because instead of going 50m plus it'll struggle to get 30m

we're not dragging oppo defences out with our forward handballs and surging game like previous years

in part due to the absence of shed's magic hands and prestias gap finding ability which means we're not as effective in penetrating the oppo midfield and have to bomb long.

usually we find ways through the mid scrimmage and surge to the 50 arc dragging the defense out opening things up more.

not looking forward to Darwin’s humidity. We have not been great up in Darwin andCairns in the past. The ball was like a cake of soap.
