In addition , if they wish to take ILLEGAL substances, nobody is making them play AFL , they can opt out and live any illegal lifestyle they like, after all it is a choice.

I gather your forum name is ironic.

It's perfectly fine for a company to take action if an employee's work performance is affected by drugs, including alcohol of course. This certainly happens where I work.

Too my knowledge, not many companies/industries have the right to force an employee to have a drug test - aside from those for which impairment can kill (eg airline pilot, truck driver). Even fewer employers have the right to test an employee when they're on holiday.

I'd sack people with poor grammar.

Not with the current AFL policy.

Even fewer employers have the right to test an employee when they're on holiday.
That is something we agree on. I don't think the clubs should be able to do testing while the players are on a break.

Sorry Luke. Fair points.

Huh!!! what was that , nothing like drawing a very long bow. Here's another. I liked to drink and drive but I don't because it is ILLEGAL , you get caught you lose your job , even if I am on holidays. I repeat it is illegal and can cause injury ,illness or death just like ILLEGAL drugs. To do so would be a choice.

So does your boss monitor your drinking and breathalyse you on your holiday trips, because funnily enough that is actually the issue we are discussing here.

ie How far your employer can carry out what are essentially law enforcement tasks.

By the way I like the old adage about the thing about common sense is that it not that common.

There are several people arguing about topic A here, while you seem to be talking about topic B, which may belong on a different forum.

No one is saying that the police should not do their job in respect of the 800 or so players on an AFL list. This will continue and is a good thing.

I'm thinking that most people on this thread are arguing whether or not a boss can force an employee to take a drug test.

Skydiving and rock climbing can cause injury or death. Shall we ban them too Common-wowser?

Were any of the gold coast players caught by their club ? ILLEGAL is ILLEGAL . Are you suggesting it is okay to do illegal things away from work.?

That's one aspect of the policy and one I think should be dropped. What they do on their breaks in the off season is up to them. With the only caveat being is if they get caught either by the law or tabvloid press, they can expect that the club has the right to impose sanctions even if that means instant dismissal for tarnishing the image of the Club (Company).

No they are not illegal. And sorry lukeanddad the underlying theme on this has to be, is it Ok to do illegal things at any time without consequences when and if you are caught.

That's fair enough. One law applied equally to all.

Whether the law is in fact desirable or effective is another discussion.

Answer the questions Commonsence rather than just trolling.

Is it OK for your boss to test YOU for drugs and alcohol when you are on holiday and to sack you if you register a positive test?

And should skydiving, rick climbing and even swimming be banned because they can cause injury or death?

Sorry Baloo isn't that just saying it is ok to do anything illegal in offseason as long as they don't get caught. There has to be a road less travelled here.

Not at all. No one is saying it's ok to do anything illegal. The question is whether the employer has the right to test for anything illegal while the employee is on holiday.

Or to labour another analogy, is it ok for a boss to monitor whether I speed while on a driving holiday...?

I think commonsense has the answer he/she is comfortable with. Being required to hold up his/her argument to logic is not to his/her liking.
