2Day FM Phone Hoax

2Day FM, Mel Greig and Michael Christian. Hang your heads in shame.

I've been arguing about this one on twitter this morning. I don't think they can be held responsible for this woman's death. That whole "Gotcha Call" thing has been around FM radio since its inception. It's been done hundreds of times, probably thousands. Their expectation would have been to have a phone slammed in their ear, a childish giggle would have ensued, and everyone would have moved on. Most of us wouldn't have even realised it had happened. If you actually listen to the call, they are as surprised as anyone to have got past the initial call taker, sadly who we now know was a (probably overworked) nurse who answered the phone because the trained receptionist was away from her desk. A tragic set of circumstances we now know in hindsight. But what they did was no different to the industry of royal impersonators (the likes of Gerry Connelly) who go around impersonating royals at public events. It's just unfortuante that this call taker, for what ever reason, did not see through the shocking impersonation and that it weighed so heavily on her that she took her own life. Bear in mind also that we don't know if there were any other issues in her life that led to this. I think it's all too easy to blame a couple of young DJs just doing what all those in their industry have done before them in search of a laugh.

I certainly didn't for one second suggest that. I don't find prank calls very amusing. I've been a victim of them through PRE and they are extremely disturbing. Different circumstances I know but they can easily tip a person over the edge. I doubt those who haven't experienced it could even begin to understand that feeling of low self worth and desolation or other people have been put at risk. Maybe, as you imply, there could be other issues and this was the trigger that sent someone over the edge. Doesn't make any difference in my books. If someone isn't hassled they may never reach that stage. In my situation it's largely the reason I don't go to the football any more. I dread meeting those awful people face to face as they've threatened. No doubt those responsible for this episode think they're pretty funny, as shown by their follow up comments, but I wonder how they'd like their own lives encroached upon by people who want to get kicks out of harassing them, no matter what their purpose is. Not amusing at all and they should all be ashamed that their own selfish egos contributed in any way to such devastation for another human being.

It lacks class but not lowlife territory IMO. The English shouldnt get high and mighty about this - The Fake Sheikh anyone?

The hospital administrators should hang their heads. Fancy not having the protocols in place to deal with journos; prank callers etc who would try and get contact and info. Not like its made global news that Kate's in hospital...

serious?

is it ok to prank a shop attendant but not the royal servants?

phone pranks occur on most radio stations. hang your heads in shame all of you.

Tragic turn of events. Really shocked tbh. Never been a fan of prank calls... I dont think u'll see it in Australia for a while

How awful. There is always a risk that publicly humiliating people for laughs could lead to something like this happening.

Prank calls happen all over the world. Can't believe the blame is being laid at the feet of these two. I'd never heard of them before this and still haven't listened to them but I really feel for them. They're gonna be hung out to dry because a nurse was dumb enough to think the Queen would be ringing the hospital directly, in the middle of the night.

I bet everyone has laughed at You've Been Framed, or something similar, at some point.

Get off their backs.

See what in Australia, prank calls?

Nowhere does it state in this column that the nurse claimed to be affected by the call so at this stage it seems something of an over-reaction.

Agreed.

Nowhere near lowlife territory.

Agree. Hospital should feel culpable here not having someone trained on handling calls on duty while they have the biggest news story in the world in one of their beds.

To tar the djs with this brush is a terrible thing to do. If anything, it's society's fault for somehow placing 'royals' above the rest of us. Making them into celebrity gods who are untouchable.

Agree. The vitriol at these 2 DJ's is over the top. Not in a million years would they have thought that the phone would have been answered, let alone transfered through on the belief that their terrible voice impersonations would have been those of the Queen and Prince Charles. There may well be more to this womans life that led her to take this tragic step of taking her own life, than simply this telephione call. Maybe the hospital should take some responsibility here too.

Semantics to me really. I think it was an extremely low act, and thought that before a woman took her life, but didn't think it worthy of a devoted thread so posted it here. Anyway taking your comments on board I shall split the discussion and make a separate thread. Hope that's more acceptable. :)

Very serious.

Not sure why you ask me if it's ok to prank shop attendants. :headscratch

The fact this involved "royal servants" is irrelevant, although I do think the press/media harass them in an unacceptable manner. Princess Diana's death is an example of it going very, very wrong.

We should all have the right to hold a phone conversation without it being recorded and repeated in the media, risking shame and humiliation to others just for personal attention seeking purposes. I thought there were laws preventing that kind of thing. I know for a fact wouldn't appreciate it if I was treated that way. I'm sure others condoning the situation might feel differently if they were treated this way too.

This situation involved a hospitalised, very ill, newly pregnant woman, at risk of losing her baby was and used for public attention grabbing. Despicable behaviour imo...poor taste in the extreme. I'm dumbfounded that anyone would find that acceptable...regardless of the tragic circumstances following this instance.

I feel for the people responsible. Awful situation. They must be feeling terrible. I'd be deeply shamed if I was involved and deservedly so. We have to be responsible for the consequences of our actions. Especially, in my humble opinion, if those actions risked shaming and humiliating for our own cheap laugh, attention grabbing purposes.
