2024 Training With The Ooze Crew

Worrying but convincing comments about uncle Mozz. Just hope Mozz learns properly on what's needed at the club. Let's also hope this ankle problem doesn't return to Dan.
Yep, it’s his 4th year so no excuses really. We should’ve just put Daniel on ice last year, stupid to keep playing him. He could hardly run in the last few games

I won't be surprised if we start the season with Young, Miller and Gibcus all in defence, with Broad for support. None of them are slow, and Miller and Gibcus are quick.

Balta's playing forward, at least for now.

Balta is the big rock in defence, him going forward we need someone who can play on the big power forwards. Young I think can as he develops. Gibcus will be more of an interceptor and spoiler and play on the 2nd or 3rd tall forwards.

Now for it to work with Balta going forward, Ben Miller has to play aggressive, crash packs, and use his frame to outmaneuver his direct opponent. He hasn't shown these attributes at all to date.

He is quick, mobile, and can take a mark but now needs to play aggressively at the man and contest. If he can play this way then Balta playing forward can work without affecting the backline structure.

If Miller and Gibcus rotate on the second tall each week based on match ups I think it’ll be alright. Or we could just go Gibcus and Young as the key talls, and play Trezise or Brown alongside Broad and Vlastuin, then the runners in Short and Rioli. I’m not writing Grimes off for the season but I doubt we’ll see much of him, especially early in the year seeing as he’s basically done no pre season. I know we recruited Kosi to play as a key forward but he was an u18 All Australian full back so there’s another option. Don’t want to be throwing guys all over the place but we have options

Think I would prefer to see Kosi in that role rather than Miller. At least he has some chutzpa.

I’d be surprised if we moved Kosi from the forward line, unless we really need another key back. Seems Yze is completely set on Balta forward

Pleased he will see midfield time. Assuming he is fit his speed is badly needed.
Not so sure abound his nephew!

Miller still has a lot to prove, but he has the speed and the skill..
Havn’t given up on him yet.
And if he doesn’t, expect that this to be his last year at Punt road.

Totally agree about Daniel. To continue playing him was, imo, irresponsible.

AFL news 2024: Daniel Rioli midfield move, Richmond 2024 season preview | Herald Sun

Richmond dasher Daniel Rioli says new coach Adem Yze has dangled the carrot of some midfield time as a shock weapon like cousin Cyril Rioli in his Hawthorn glory days.
It comes as Rioli backed in his close relative Maurice Rioli to put his new-found maturity on show in a make-or-break season at Punt Road.

Tigers defender Rioli has packed a full career’s worth of moments in his eight seasons as a triple premiership small forward with a Goal of the Year award before winning All Australian 40 honours in 2022 as a half back.

Now the 26-year-old has a new coach in Yze and potentially new challenges despite his desire to again dominate at half back after limping through 2023 with a niggling ankle injury.

Rioli said instead of spending time on the training track he too often had his ankle in a bucket of ice as fluid in the joint saw him playing hurt for interim coach Andrew McQualter.

McQualter missed out on the new role for former Demons star Yze, who honed his coaching skills in a side with star small forward Cyril Rioli during their premiership era.

Daniel Rioli is again injury free and told the Herald Sun he still wasn’t sure how to take Yze’s suggestion of some midfield minutes.

“He wants me to play mostly half back but he made a comment to me: “What is your nickname? What about ‘Silk”,” Rioli told the Herald Sun after the club’s intraclub clash on Wednesday.

“He said if we needed a ‘Cyril’ or a Shaun Burgoyne to provide spark in the midfield why not? They were ‘Mr Fix-it’ players. He did make that comment and obviously I want to play half back this year. I haven’t played a lot of midfield time in my AFL career so I am excited if that does come about. Midfield, forward, back to the backline, I am happy. He has got a lot of confidence in our players and I am thrilled to play under him.”

“Last year was a bit of a roller coaster for us. We all have confidence in Yze’s game plan and what he brings to the club.”

Last year Rioli’s stats were almost identical to his breakout 2022 as a defender – resulting in a fifth-placing in the Jack Dyer Medal.

But too often he hobbled into games and played through contests despite re-injuring his ankle.

“It was tough with the injury and I just tried to do the right thing for the team to get out there. A nice off-season helped. I got off my legs for a bit and I am cherry ripe now but there was heaps of fluid on my ankle that kept bugging me through the year,” he said.

“I couldn’t even walk on it at some stages. The ankle was a bit blue and I had to be at home with an ice bucket every night and that got me through but I had a good physio who looked after me.”

Post-season Rioli and partner Paris Lawrence escaped for some sightseeing to Tokyo before returning to his home in the Tiwi Islands over Christmas.

The club had urged third-year forward Maurice Rioli to rededicate himself to his fitness across the off-season given his tank did not allow him to get to enough contests in a ten-game 2023 AFL season.

He returned in adequate rather than outstanding shape but Daniel Rioli said he had made up for lost time since then.

“Obviously Maurice has got a long way to go. He’s still young and he’s pretty raw to this game so we know what a good pressure player he is. He is now (in good shape). I go home a lot and have a lot of bush tucker which puts me over that scale a bit,” he said.

“We both try to come back in reasonable shape but obviously the club has good programs through training. He has been good. He is still young and learning and if he doesn’t come back as fit he’s got a good program with physios and coaches who talk him through things

“He is still getting to that stage where he is maturing. He is only 21 years old and this year he needs to get into it and show the people what he’s made of.”

Matches exactly what I said about his off-season return, just add the in and adequate together ;)

Yep I remember you saying so and thought gee Daniel is being a bit generous here. 4th year for MJ so absolutely no excuse to turn up in below average condition again

The only comment I would have about Moju is that towards the end of 2023 he was tried on the ball in the vfl. He obviously does not have the tank to spend extended periods there but at times he was electric. He has this 5-10 metre burst of speed that the opposition had trouble dealing with.
I'm not saying he will suddenly become a midfielder but it is the same burst of speed that helps him close down space defensively when he plays as a forward. It is his main asset and is something to work with
He is nowhere near the finished product and maybe he will never be, but he does have some attributes as an AFL player. I just hope we see him really fit at some stage

Won't last with that attitude when 99.9% of his team mates do the right thing and stay in shape during the break.
You can only live off your name for so long.

Nice! Keen for your report, hopefully lots of good news :D
It ain't much of one, after 38c yesterday i put on sunscreen and hat today only to be caught in cold and drizzle so left early.

So rehab report only.

All of Couthard, Bauer and Grimes commenced some drills today interspersed with what ever rehab/conditioning they are still on.

Tigga back.

Only Lynch and Prestia in full time rehab today.

Sorry, that is it.
