2024 Richmond Coach

If Terry Wallace is endorsing Newman I don't know what to think.

I was firmly with him right up until then.
There are plenty who would endorse Newy apart from plough.

It’s interesting that he does because as I recall Newy was a big part of the whole process that led to Wallace getting the sack

So Mini was ahead of McRae, Leppich and Kingsley. I’m calling bull dust on that.

Doesn’t paint Benny in a great light if this was even remotely true.
Yes hence why they all left all knowing they'd never get the job

Where mini has stayed loyal despite job offers at the blues the dogs the saints as well as the vfl

His known for many years he was the next one

I think that a pretty fair case can be made that Minie’s instructions were ‘don’t rock the boat’ when he took over.
The team has done pretty well apart from three games against higher positioned teams, who smashed us. (A one pt loss to ESS finally occurring because of a single catastrophic error, was not expected).

My point is that if the club had the confidence to put its lot into the hands of Mini rather than either of our assistants with AFL coaching experience, it did so because it had a plan.
Our executive has a reputation for sticking fat. I have seen nothing yet which persuades me that the original plan will change. Mini is still in front of the field.

This process is just a box ticker political stunt

Mini has been the chosen one since 2016 when dimma was on the out

Mini was pinpointed to take the reigns in 2025 which wax when dimma was ment to go this has just brought the silent succession plan forward by 2 Years

Mini already has the job a 3 year deal has been agreed upon hence the retirements his starting to make his mark on setting the list up to where he wants it moving forward
Why didnt you tell me 7 years ago?

Question on Newman does the part he was part of our poor culture and losing one worry you ?. Is he able to make hard calls and be his own coach worries me.
I always admired Chris Newman. There weren't too many players that came through Richmond at that time who carved out solid 200+ games careers, especially those drafted as late as he was... pick 55.

I remember Liam Pickering talking about the change in Richmond over the past 20 years, he drew on his experience managing players at Richmond and other clubs at that time and observed that Richmond wasn't known as a club that got the best out of players. He may have been talking out his arse because he was managing Jay Schulz at the time... but his point was that we weren't a destination club as club culture, player develpment and facilities were poor... he likened it to a graveyard for talent.

As mentioned, Newman was drafted at pick 55 in 2000. There weren't too many players drafted in the 5 years prior or 5 years after that made it to 200 games... he played 268... and many of those other draftees has more natural talent than Chris.

To succeed in that period required a lot of self motivation and determination. Newman did it in spite of being at Richmond... not because he was at Richmond. Newman worked hard and made the most of his opportunity.

I don't think Chris was anything to do with our poor culture... quite the opposite... I think the latter stages of his career and his leadership role was the beginning of turning things around. I haven't heard anyone from Richmond ever say anything negative about his time at the club. No overblown ego... humble, professional and hard working.

Don't know if he will get the job. I imagine people don't believe he has a hard enough edge, which is a similat criticism to McQualter. I've heard that McQualter can deliver a spray as well as anyone and can hit a player between the eyes when needed, just doesn't do it in public. Chris may well be the same.

I don't really know, I'll just have to trust that club makes the right choice and then surrounds whoever they choose with quality people, to build upon our strong culture and maximise our chances of further success.

Says a lot about the character of Wallace if that’s the case. Even if newman was the one to get rid of him he obviously didn’t let that stop him from seeing the good work he didn’t around the club! That’s impressive

I don’t think I could take a spray from McQualter seriously. He wasn’t hard or a great player or anything and as such he may not be respected as much as someone like a Hardwick, Kingsley, Voss etc.

Gotta admit, used to *smile* myself around, draft time, trade week and whenever we were looking for a new coach in the good old days, Just hoping the club wouldn’t *smile* it up again. Haven’t felt that way for quite a while, until now. Don’t know why, I should have confidence that they will get it right.

But…

Yeah Nah
McRae and Leppitsch left to coach the Pies
Kingsley went to coach Giants
They all knew Dimma was there till end of 2024 and weren’t prepared to wait 3 or more years to get their chance

We should hire a standards and ball movement coach for 1-3 years. Then sack the frown. Bringing back Kingley. Yes, Kinglsey. Nyeh, nyeh, nyeh...

There is a four year window in which our drafting manager has to shine. In that time our coach is just about basics.

All praise Matthew of the Potato Eye.

No idea what the rest of it meant, but this is pretty much it. We have 4 years of building a new team in front of us, so let's pick the best person to do that. Based on what I've read about the Job Description, that's the direction we're taking.

What’s your dislike about Terry ?
Great strategic coach unfortunately had sub standard assistants
Similar to what Hardwick had in 2016
