The 1980 team was fantastic with the possible exception of the key defensive posts - Jess was great at CHB (but had to go forward whenever Cloke got injured) while we also had an ageing but still reliable Francis Bourke and more dour defenders in Strachan and Dunne.

Mount was a very talented player who never went on with it for some reason (he came as a star Tassie footballer who I saw while growing up in Hobart). Should have been a ten year centre half back. We ended up recruiting an aged Alan Martello instead for the 1982 tilt.
We also had Bruce Tempany who was a very good player. Really missed him in the 82 side due to injury and would have made a huge difference in the backline that day we lost to Carlton in the granny. He would have controlled their mosquito fleet from kicking the goals they did.

til my dying day I'll always hold Francis Bourke accountable for that loss. I was at the G on the last training session when he "tested" Mick Malthouse's damaged shoulder. Seriously the way he tackled Malthouse he would've smashed a good shoulder. Result ? Malthouse hurt and omitted and the Carlton smalls could breathe easy.

Then Francis decides not to play Brian Taylor, who knows why, perhaps poor weather forecast.

Anyway it came as no surprise to me the knives came out and Bourke didn't coach Richmond for any length of time.

Still my bitterest GF loss.

'72, Carlton had a day out, you can't stop that, but '82 we contributed to our own downfall imo.

Broke his arm during the first half if I remember correctly. Great player and was a huge loss.

Should have stayed the course and played BT in that game to ahead of Ian Satori.

Agree with all the above. Another, more underrated contributor (to the loss) was the loss of Andy Preston with a hamstring injury he sustained in the 2nd Semi Final win against Carlton. He was another quick onballer with a penetrating kick that could hit the scoreboard. We could certainly have used him given the conditions.

Totally agree with all that. And instead we played Ian Sartori in the 82 GF which was a disastrous selection

Tempany didn't break his arm accidentally, it was broken when a dog of a Cartoon player kicked his arm deliberately as he reached for the ball.

That imo was the real turning point of the game. Tempany was flying at that stage.

We were never gonna win that day. Too top heavy. Parkin totally out coached Francis.

Even when we were in front, you could just sense things were gonna turn. And they did. Too quick and sharp.

Still remember as a young kid, behind the goals, KB and Cloke arguing with one another. Cloke kicked 3 from just 8 kicks but looked vacant the whole game. Few of his efforts were ordinary that day. Left the next year along with Raines.

Not sure that team had a lot of harmony.

An EITR is something that is obvious and undeniable that nobody wants to talk about or acknowledge. I disagree, I think most people openly acknowledge the dominant era of 2017-2020 is over and we need to rebuild for the next one. Its no secret we need to get more good players to contend again.
Yeh, agree snake. And personally I am excited about seeing this "new" group of tigers..

We (well actually the core group of players/coaches) achieved more than most could have dreamed. 3 flags! Those memories can never be taken away. They are treasured.

We took a shot this year, we needed everything to go right and it didn't. But this premiership was and is up for grabs. Our best was good enough. It doesn't diminish this group. It doesn't diminish the three flags. The *smile* about could dimma really coach, was it purely that we had dusty, etc etc is just noise. 3 flags in 4 years is not down to any single thing. (although in my mind it was all GEORGE).

It's time for a new era. New ideas. Fresh players. We need to embrace change. I'm looking forward to see it evolve.
