2023 Women's World Cup

Man that was intense! Incredible effort from the Matildas to get through that penalty shootout. That is some of the most nail biting sport you’ll ever watch.

Feel we probably should have won in regular time. Mary Fowler had some great chances but just couldn’t convert or choose the right option. Tough as she put herself in great positions. Then we did well to hang on when France charged at us late extra time.

Awesome stuff.

I thought Mary Fowler was brilliant throughout, on any other night could have had a couple in regular time

I’m usually not a soccer watcher but that was great.

Haven’t got cable TV. So didn’t get to see the England vs Colombia game. For those watching. How do England look covering Lauren James? Plenty of depth, or simply a hole very difficult to cover?

Pommies won 2-1 so we play them on Wednesday night 8:00pm (AEST)

What a game, and what a finish. I know everybody hates the penalty shoot outs but really there is little choice once the players have run themselves ragged for 120+ minutes.

Quarter finals and you hit a quality opponent and France are clearly a very good team.

Chuffed to see the Matildas win, I have never really watched much soccer but certainly invested in the Matildas.

Soccer does have that aspect which Australian Rules has in that it keeps going without timeouts or the like. It is a decent spectator sport because there is always something going on. But, gee am I glad I follow Australian Rules. That was just too tense. No release. One tiny mistake and game over with the scoring so low.

Let's hope they can knock off England in the Semi, to get this far is huge, but they can still go further, wow.

Yeah, I saw the result. But was more after what people who saw them play, assessed how they looked structurally without James in the side. How they filled the hole. Or whether it totally unbalanced them and they looked out of sorts.

From the highlights, seemed a bit lucky to get away with the regular time win. Although highlights admittedly can be deceiving.

Colombia had big chances. And from what I’ve seen over the past few weeks, Colombia get my tick as most spectacular, entertaining side of the World Cup.

The Latin Americans have barely scratched the surface on the women’s football/soccer scene (even Brazil and Argentina haven’t really gone all out in the women’s game yet, far from it). They are slowly waking up. And when they do, look out. Teams like the US, Australia, Canada really want to take their opportunities in this formative era to win tournaments, because as these traditional football/soccer powers wake up to the women’s game, it’s going to keep getting more difficult to win these.

I have a funny relationship with watching international soccer. Because it is just so international, as opposed to getting really invested and partisan barracking for a side. I’m simply fascinated by all the unique matchups that a tournament like this produces. Just love the contest.

I think it’s because growing up watching world cups Australia was never in the tournament, so I suppose I got wired to watch it in the above context. Don’t get me wrong, I like to see Australia do well (both Socceroos and Matildas), but it’s not the main reason I watch.

Hence, I was sitting there just as tense, really not wanting either side to lose. I couldn’t pick which side was a more deserving winner. Either side could fall into this category. Thus, as you say, I really hate penalty shootouts.

Had a reunion in a pub with some old mates, it was going off, the noise was unreal. I thought one old dear was going to have a heart attack.

Well done Matildas, bring on England.

I thought she was choosing the right options when passing its just others couldn't capitalise. Her delivery to other players borders on sublime.

Yeah she’s a great player. Finally discovered she is a right footer when she took the penalty. She is so smooth on either side I had no idea before that. Just thought last night she had a couple of great chances she could have finished and there was at least one other where she shot but should have passed to open players in the box. One of those nights for her; hopefully against the Poms it all comes together.

To the people who don't follow the game. Do you get it now?

It was awesome but for my own experience doesn’t touch the sensation and elation of Richmond victories in those big finals games from 2017 and 2019. Even the 2020 GF which I wasn’t at.

I really enjoy the world game at an elite level but others don’t. Whatever floats your boat. Fiat Multipla sounds like a tosser.
