2023 PRE Phantom Draft

Having seen some of my faves like Chedda and Simpson go just prior, there are still a few I like here and would be happy with on draft night for us. A bit of a toss-up but I'm going with Harvey Johnston, in part because if I don't get him now, he'll be @Scoop ed up before my next pick. A rubber man who resembles the Bond brothers Troy and Shane, there's a bit of Shane Edwards about him too. Great hands, good runner, creative, evasive af. Played mainly high-half-forward but did have 29 disposals and 6 clearances v WA when given the chance on-ball.

@Sammy Cougar up next.

I rang Ade Dud and asked him who Essendon take at this pick and he responded: "get that Harvey Johnston that Richmond just picked, tell em well give them next year's 4th rounder for him"

Essendon pick Lance Collard ( i think you can draft him before pick 40?)

Already taken
FFS, I do this every year! Apologies!

Take 2: Luamon Lual:
Height: 182cm
Weight: 72kg
D.O.B: 28-03-2005

SNAPSHOT: “An aggressive rebounding defender, Luamon Lual is a player who looks to keep the game moving forward at all costs, running it as far as he can and following up with typically clean ball use”

I love LL. flip of the coin with simpson at my previous pick. Could be the steal of the draft, if his name was Rioli he'd be top 12.

Collingwood picks Joel Freijah at 36, I think it's time to plan for a post Sidebottom world and Freijah has some good attributes for a hard running wingman. Shades of Paul Chapman when he's at his absolute best, I like his all round game and think he's decent value for a late second.

Thanks matey,

Essendon pick:

Kade De La Rue

Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country
FWD, 183cm, 79kg
Talent League: 8 games, 20.5 disposals, 0.7 goals

De La Rue is a smart and agile forward offering great decision-making with ball in hand. His football IQ is what sets him apart from the other mid-forwards in the draft, able to create opportunities for his teammates with skill and class.

And if I’m not mistaken Kades dad Ben was also a Stingrays player 30 years ago! Was touted as a draftee but didn’t get a gig.

Should I pick for Sammy? I reckon I can get him a good one, and if it turns out he would have picked the player I do next pick, and thinks I've pulled a swifty, we can switch them.

Pick 40: Brisbane pick Zane Zakostelsky. We need an athletic tall backman, Adams premature retirement left a big hole, ZZ Top will will fit the bill. Rapt.

Pick 41: Saints select Heath Ollington, Tassie Devils, Allies, medium fwd

Runs on the board is what Heath has, Impact, tick, performed in big games at the highest level, tick, consistency, tick. Hits the contest hard, at ground level and in the air. Pure footballer in the Ben Dixon mold. I know Sheahan loves everyone, but this is his spiel, and as a club who has watched him closely, he is spot-on here, included because he doesn't feature in any phantom drafts:

Heath Ollington
State: Tasmania
State League Club: Tasmania Devils
Community Club: North Launceston
Date of Birth: 10/12/04
Height: 190cm

Medium forward who presents particularly well as a marking target with his mobility, strong hands and courage. Was outstanding when given an opportunity to represent the Allies, seizing the moment with 21 disposals, seven marks and a goal to be one of his team’s best against Victoria Metro. Had a very consistent year with the Tasmania Devils in the Coates Talent League where he averaged 15.6 disposals and 5.4 marks as well as kicking 23 goals for the team which finished in first place on the ladder.

Commentators and fans note, as he is a Tassie native, his first name is pronounced 'Heef'.
