2021 Draft Thread

Trade Period Net Loss / Gain Summary:

In:
Tarrant, Pick 27, Future 2nd Round (tied to norf)

Out:
CCJ, Chol, Pick 42, Pick 47, Future 3rd (to Lollingwood), Future 4th (to norf).

That's a clear FAIL.
Not sure how you can jump to this conclusion without seeing the players we recruit. Your reasoning is based on an artificial scale that gives little credence to the cattle available at the time. Would you be happier if we manage to secure another top 20 selection?

Not sure its a clear fail personally. Assuming the North pick is 20 and we finish 10th (I think we can do a lot better than that), then the net points gain is 445 or around Pick 39, so essentially Tarrant and 39 for Chol and CJ who both (or either) could have walked to the PSD.

If we manage to get back into the top 4, its Pick 31 and Tarrant for CJ and Chol.
Just read about the pick swap on AFL.
But havent read these pages.

Posh, why did we give up a F3 next year. Seems way overs for me. Is that right?

FFS can people stop comparing the points value. What use are points unless you are looking to get a father/son or Academy player? No use at all.

What use are late picks, like 3rd round assuming we make the finals? We are already struggling to fit newly drafted players on our list (hence rookie listing a couple) so chances are we were barely going to use the 3rd round pick next year anyway.

Were we really going to use both 38 and 40 this year, do we have the space on the list, would it have limited our options in terms of possibly trying out a player or two to potentially take in the rookie draft?

What use are lower picks? Damned useful, you get a better choice of players.

Good deal, we lose picks we would barely use, and if we used them it would have been speculative picks so late in the draft, and we get a more useful pick.

It’s not a fail. On the whole the trade period has been a pass mark because of the CJ deal. Just that in isolation, the packaging of picks to move up was a bit of a fail.

Anyway let’s just get back to the Draft itself.
Who do you like at 26, 27 & 28?

Purely on a points value then yes it appears over, but as with any sort of currency it comes down to the value you can gain out of it.

I was thinking about Pick 27 earlier today and was actually thinking that it suits the Pies more to have a pick in this years draft and a pick in next years rather than both 38 and 40. Depending on where people think we could finish next year (and in reality it could be anywhere from about Pick 40 to Pick 54. Thats a massive swing, and with uncertainty, you pay for it (its kind of like a hedge in the business world, you pay for something top provide certainty).

Theres also the focus that other clubs may also have offered very good deals for Pick 27, and it is highly likely that others did and also that we wouldn't have used Pick 40 (other clubs would probably suspect that too, any of them can do maths, and as it stands, we don't have the available slots to take 6) so that reduces our value in Pick 40 somewhat.

Its why people need to look at the trade period as a whole, rather than individual trades as some individual trades you do wonder why they occured.

As I think Sin said too, it provides an indication of what we are planning next year, we may well be into 1 or 2 free agents from next year and don't have the need for that pick, and if we can use that to benefit our position this year in order to draft a player we think is better, then we should do that.

it might be, but thats the thing with negotiating, they would have been dealing with at least 1 other club & we offered more to secure the pick we wanted, I dont get the angst

I'm loving this 3 in a row thing...

if we keep them - psychologically it will mess with other clubs - Pick 26 Richmond, Pick 27 Richmond, Pick 28 Richmond ..

if we trade them up - they're useful - like we just did with 38 and 40.

We must have our eyes on something and or someone.

Ah I’ve got a bunch in mind but there’s no point going into them all until it gets closer to Draft week when you get a better sense of which club is in for what players, testing info leaks etc. I see people changing their mind on players every second day on this thread - no need for me to add to that.

Suffice to say however, that range of picks allows us to think positionally and brings the likes of Bazzo and other kpps into play.

On the subject of which, don’t think anyone has mentioned this, but like Gibcus, Bazzo has played much of his junior career at CHF - not down back. Worth keeping in mind.

Five picks inside 30, let's stop stuffing about and get four mids and a mid-forward.
All for this, maybe three mids, a KP and a hybrid. Howes, Rankine good prospects for pick 28. Bazzo and Williams prospects at 27.
Would be happy with Matthew Roberts in the 26,27,28 range. Looks like he's slipping but he'd be a good get if he's around.
Not for this. Plodder.

I hope they just take the five picks in the draft now and not worry about trying out a few sliders for a rookie pick. These are all quality picks. Maybe consider swapping 7 and 15 for 5 and 21 with the Hawks or 6 and 19 with Freo, other than that, take the five picks now.

For next year, we currently have three similar picks to this year. Amongst the strategies we could employ are to bring forward a future first round pick from 2023 and add a quality free agent.

That‘s 9 top 30-ish picks and a free agent in two years.

Surely we can rebuild for sustained success by allocating those resources to get the job done.

You've left out the Chol compo pick.

5 quality picks is good.

Let's look at the last time Deledio, Tambling, Meyer, Pattison and Polo ........... :devilish:

I wanted JVR but reckon with our picks we miss him and I'm not keen on many other other talls.

The Roberts thing I get, footballer only, no athlete. Reckon he's now underrated as a prospect.
