2021 Draft Thread

points smoints.
Pies gain 200 points this year, which they could have used from their next pick 46 anyway.
To do the trade they obviously wanted to get a 2022 draft pick.
its done now.
Points in the third round overrated and I say this using all the historical information at my disposal, the likelihood of getting a core player or even an A grader pretty much the same from about pick 50 onwards.

For that trade to be worthwhile you would want a pick in the first dozen, but even then I reckon you might have more success with three more speculative types, all depends on the player you are targeting. Now if that player was Wanganeen-Milera and he was a bust then it might wind up being a disaster. Two picks for a potential A grade outside player better in my opinion.
Another pick in the teens almost guarantees us a Sonsie & Johnson combo.

Classic example is 2017
Picks 29, 30, 31 (adjusting 26,27,28 for Daicos, Darcy, Fahey) in 2017 were Charlie Spargo, Tom de Koning, Bayley Fritsch.
or 2016 were Shai Bolton, Sam McClarty, Josh Begley

The 3 picks give a great opportunity for an AFL 10 year player

You still haven't told me what you would of given for pick 17 to beat what the Dogs eventually got. It is easy to be critical but you need to explain how you would of done better. I certainly don't agree with everything the club does and I think we have paid slightly overs on this deal but sometimes you have to pay a bit overs, you win some you lose some. I just didn't like you smart arse tone about the cheer squadders and giving you the chance to show what the club should of done. In other words put up or shut up.
We already know the value ‘give up’ that would have gotten it done ! What are you talking about ???

To get the Dogs pick 17 Melbourne were part of a 4 club trade that saw the Dogs realise a net value exchange increase of 499 points.

We’ve just given up conceivably 470 points to get 27 - not even a first rounder.

You wouldn’t have found an extra 29 points to get 17 instead of 27 eh TT ????

Again, if you think that’s not worth discussing, I politely disagree. Otherwise, it’s now your turn to put up or shut up.

Well, we got caught a bit short is the reason. And Cwood took advantage. A few people were calling this out and then had a few cheer squadders labelling it as “panicking” when really, it was just logical reasoning that we were going to have to pursue a sub optimal outcome to avoid a really unpalatable outcome ie excess de listings or unused Draft picks.

Anyway, moving on. Lot of decent picks to still be able to use in an exciting Draft.
Spot on Red nuts you and I were onto this early when we missed the Dogs 1st rounder. We called a firesale was likely and that's exactly what's happened.

If we take Rachele then I reckon we can let Sonsie slide, it's one or the other from my perspective. The reason I say this is both guys will be started on a flank due to aerobic limitations, so effectively competing for one spot. Now if you value Sonsie more than Rachele, then grab Johnson first and then hope Sonsie slides to our second.

You still haven't answered my question. Which specific picks ?

Read my post to TT. It explains the strategic ineffectiveness that’s resulted.
I think it is a fair point, what would you have offered that beat what the dogs got out of the deal? Also keep in mind we were working the CJ deal.

I give up, you are like a politician and won't answer my question. We will have no idea of the effectiveness of any of these picks and drat strategies for some years but obviously you have a crystal ball. Kink Kong reckoned there was only 8 kids worth picking in this draft so if he is agreeing with you I would be worried. Anyway, have a good day, it is what it is now and we can carry on as much as we want, what's done is done and who knows there might be more pick swaps to come.

Agree with others. Not sure why we needed to give away next year's third when the deal without it still advantaged the Pies.

Maybe...just maybe... it's because other clubs were trying to get pick 27 and we needed to offer the best deal to get the trade over the line?

Yes, Geesook would have been up to their eyeballs in discussions. Its too much to pay though. We should have held our nerve and traded on the night when players slipped to 38 & 40 and multiple clubs starting coming for them. We could have got Future 2nd rounders for each.

Wonderful result. Bulldogs traded pick 17 and 75 (1025 points) for 23, 44, 45 (1524). They got significant overs. We could not compete with that offer. That's what happens with any type of market system.

Yes we paid overs for 27.....but that was always going to happen if we wanted to obtain an earlier pick. Reckon there may just be better value in what we did in any case.

yeah - we probably overpaid for pick 27, but the key is gonna be nailing these 5 picks. Clark's early picks of recent times haven't really delivered yet so hoping he can turn things around in this draft and doesn't get too cute with his selections.
