Another game, another convincing Richmond victory.
That was my sentiment at about 1.30pm yesterday as I strode confidently to the G. I should have known better, when I arrived at the ground my sister texted me to say she had gone to the game – she hasn’t seen us win in 5 years. As I sit here writing this she still hasn’t.
The sun was shining, the pre-game pie I had was excellent, there is no team I despise more than Carlton and we were going to win – we were actually going to win – it was going to be a great day.
So what went wrong? Things started off according to script. My mate from Uni and I couldn’t believe our luck when we snuck into second level seats amongst a horde of Carlton supporters, and things got better when we piled on 8 goals in the first term. I remember seeing Bootsma line up on Jack and thinking he was in for a big one, and it looked that way when he snagged the first and had a hand in the next 2.
I think Tyrone finds a little bit more against Carlton. I have fond memories of him crashing into Mitch Robinson in the first round, and he started well yesterday with a goal and a few marks in the opening minutes.
My mate said he knew yesterday’s debutant Matt McDonough and he was a pretty down to earth lad. He was certainly in the earth when he picked up the ball for the first time right in front of where we were sitting, took a fraction too long and got driven into the turf by a Blue to the tune of 30,000 Carlton supporters screaming “BALLLLL”. Welcome to the big time.
But quarter time came and we were 5 goals up thanks to great quarters from Ellis and Foley in particular. We were home right? No-one scores 50 points in the first quarter and loses? Right?
Wrong. Things started to unravel when the MCG steward kicked us out of our seats and told us to go elsewhere. We went around and sat in the top deck of the Olympic stand, next to a bloke called Adrian who had come by himself from the Gold Coast. He was only 34 and I am plenty younger than that, but we have both seen enough Tiger capitulations to know the warning signs that another one is coming. And when Brock Mclean is baulking around blokes and kicking bananas from 35m out, that is a sure sign that we’re in some strife.
The Blues ended up playing some pretty reasonable footy and me and Adrian lamented the absence of Chris Newman, our mutual hero down back. I cannot stand Mitch Robinson but I had to admire his ruthless attack on the footy yesterday. Our heads went in our hands when big Casboult swung his leg wildly and not only connected with the footy, but somehow put it through for a goal with about 10 minutes to go to kill us off. We staged a brief comeback but time wasn’t on our side, and Tucky’s miss from 40 out was evidence it was not going to be our day.
We headed to the Richmond Club in Swan Street to drown our sorrows, and it turned out Adrian is a financial planner. I think he must plan his finances pretty well because he was buying us pint after pint of Richmond lager.
Anyway after a few froffs, the pain of losing to Carlton had worn off, and I came to the conclusion that this can happen. Every game I have expected us to win this year we have won, except for this one. We have consistently beaten teams that we should beat, and so this should be treated as a blip on the radar and nothing else. I just wish the blip wasn’t against Carlton.

Thanks to Draga for a report that summed up the day. Good to hear you were able to drown your sorrows after our capitulation. You weren't alone.
My day started well with a couple of beers with tigertim and Yinnar (& Son) in the Maurice Rioli room. We all agreed that the game could be a potential hurdle, but after the first quarter I was settling in for a thumping victory. As the report clearly stated, things rapidly went downhill from there. The leaders in this poll had their worst games that I can ever recall and that was a major reason why Carlton ran all over our side in the final three quarters.
On the bright side, Deledio had a great game and has reignited the 3 way race for the PREmier Fighting Tiger Award. After sitting in third for the past few rounds, he has rallyed and is now back on top with two games to play. It really sets it up for one of the closest finishes in this award's history.
Dan Jackson also continued his great form and has cemented that 4th spot, which is now really his to lose from this point. Nick Vlastuin, Tyrone Vickery and Steve Morris also continued their quiet accumulation of votes that has typified their solid seasons.
I am sure that Dimma provided some home truths to the side with finals only a few weeks away. Capitulation in a commanding position may be an important lesson to remember come September. The boys can show their resolve this week as we go in as unbackable favourites against the Giants. I have a wager that involves streaking at a poker match on the line, so I'm sure the Tiges won't let me down.
Carn' the Tiges!
