MATCH REPORT
by Dyer'ere

Waking or sleeping I can summon either – Grace with a voice like a river, knees together, perched on a laundry bench or Angelina, legs crossed, sitting on the balustrade of that Northcote bridge, her voice like vodka jelly.

Against my will, Grace comes to me at night, kisses my forehead; I wake with Angelina's jaw in my hands, kissing her eyelids.

I have not seen Angelina for six months but two days before the Sydney game Grace held me like yesterday's sporting page. Then I drove north.

None of that worked out. Except for my resolve to bet against Hawthorn the next week. I told the Gyps. I told everyone. Richmond would spank Hawthorn the next week. The Sydney loss just improved the price.

The Friday night before the game I saw Grace again. Her boyfriend had to go home earlier. I walked her to her car. I felt light as I put her through her driver door, not a monster. She didn't feel light, kinda just normal. Good bye.

When I went back to the club Bamba was high on life. No Persians. Pen was rappin with Birdlet, real close. I love the brother thing.

Then they went.

I only told ya half the rule – emotions are for ladies – tequila is for men.

That's what the barman said.

The next day I woke to the Gyps shoving Gatorade in my face.

He said “We've missed the game. I can get you to the TAB in time if you can get up.”

I said “If WTF?” threw the doona off, donned clothes and then we were at the Moreland. Time was invasive but important. Light was that too.

I had money. $4.75. $9. $26. $100, then $80. Missed a hundred on the $80 through pride or slow.

Gyps said “Lets go to Nana's.” (Like last year.)

He drove me to me mum's where we watched the game. I got her to hold the tickets and maybe pray, but you can't pray for money only health or somesuch.

I told him that when we flogged Hawthorn we had to go to Texas. He is proud but was ok.

Looking back I know that I had pneumonia and some rip of the whatsisname and I was sadly out of form. But Mum didn't know and so she prayed for something, some wild delusion that I know is not palpable but I don't mind, eh.

Me an gyps got to Glenroy about half way through the first quarter. It was an indictment of the Hawthorn fraud. Destruction of all that the mythlovers would have you believe. Thirteen clearances to nil. Not enough on the scoreboard. The Tigers dominated another ten minutes for little.

The money matters; it proves the truth.

Many would panic after an almost goal-less second quarter. Hodge getting a kick. Ceglar playing hardman with a genteel elbow.

Rumours and myths. Check the press – Fremantle was depleted but Hawthorn was not.

Big iVvy, Chimp. Tross dominant. But many waiting in the wings. Dimma had cards to play.

After half time we let down. Shame it rained. Hawks jibbed as they so often do. Bachar kept laying down the law. How can Buddy (injured) get a kick when Cyril is getting flogged by Mozza?

It was what it always promised to be – a massacre. The Hawks could never admit to being grateful for the rain, but we know what we think.

Me an Mr X were exchanging texts in the final quarter when the Tiges might have got the ten goals. The Gyps was jumpin. Mum has doin that Kareem high five with the jangling fingers. I don't know what God was doing, and I didn't ask Mum.

Then it all might have turned to sh!t but it didn't. I wrote five texts to Mr X – *smile*. *smile*. *smile*. *smile*. *smile*. But we did get the 39.5+. The money.

I was a bit too crook to go out. I took some (prescribed) codeine and went to bed. Grace came to me like she was here right now and sang - “You're so far away/ doesn't anybody stay in one place any more.”

What happened next is like death.

I awoke with Dr Angelina's face in my hands. I was kissing her eyes.

No one describes the game quite like Dyer'ere. Thanks for stepping up and providing back to back reports.

The game itself was a beauty and the PRE voters turned up to reflect their pleasure in the result. Rance's ownership of Buddy saw him voted best on ground, but Cotchin wasn't far behind. The skipper has left his top shelf form for late in the season, but he is now ramping up for some September action. At this rate he should reach his peak sometime in late September. Finally, the big Ivan had his best game of the year, with his physical presence an important factor in the Tiger victory.

Apologies for the late report this week. A big weekend down in Queenscliff saw me miss my first Tiger home game of the year and prevented me from posting the results of the Hawthorn match until now. With 4 matches to go, this year's race for the PREmier Fighting Tiger award is tighter than ever. Can Dusty hold on? Will Cotchin's late rise continue? Can Lids rediscover his top shelf early season form?

Great sequence of reports there Dyer'ere. Didn't know you'd done the Sydney one and just went back and read it. (watched the first half of the Sydney game in a bar in Shanghai I stumbled into, couldn't believe it, had to leave but I thought we were gone).

Did a peck sneezing, sorry, but that is a p!sser.

Bit of a nod to zipper's oldskool and poor old Petterd's situation, ts. Ta, broo.

BTW match report romance? Ya gotta try. And thank you, PT.

Furthermore I'm trying to tie in with the cowardice of bitterness and the bravery of longing idea I've expressed elsewhere. In this story the future is so close you can almost taste it. Feel the jaw of the kiss in your hands. The future. Albeit only of football.

MATCH REPORT
by Streak

It was uncharted territory for the mighty Tigers and their just as mighty supporters as the team prepared to play a game that would ultimately seal a finals berth.

Coming off a strong win over the premiership fancies Hawthorn, it looked how far early for the Tigers as they roared into life against a Lions team who had shown some form winning 4 of their last 5. It wasn't so much slick precision and poise as hard running and pressure for the Tigers. They looked like a team that wanted it far more, and the reality was they did. Cotchin, Jackson, Houli combined with lesser lights like White to tear the heart out of the Lions.

Jackson set an early tone to the game snapping a very quick opener, while the Lions labored and took just over 20 minutes to get a goal when Rich finally found some space to run onto clearance an kick truly.

As much as the Tigers owned the first quarter, their start to the second was captivating. The Lions were not getting near it as the Tigers played a possession game that threatened to turn this into a blowout. Matt White kicked a ripper running goal for the Tigers, who had by then built a sizable lead.

But just as the game looked to have become a formality, the Lions showed some ticker. Those watching would have been forgiven for thinking that the lead at halftime should have been much more. The Tigers dominated the second quarter but scored 5.5 when an 8 or 9 goal quarter should have been theirs. But the Lions conjured 3 goals, and the damage was 45 points at the main break.

The teams appeared to have swapped jumpers in the third term. The Tigers missed very gettable shots on goal, with Cotchin a main offender, while the Lions started potting them from everywhere, Staker's shot entering time on being a real highlight. A goalless quarter from the Tigers, with the Lions grabbing 3, gave the visitors some hope of a miracle comeback.

That hope looked well alive when the Lions continued to score goals, and got the margin to less than 3 goals mid way through the last quarter. Hanley's goal had the margin at 16 points, and while not nervous, Tigers fans would have been feeling hollow at the thought of just beating the Lions instead of getting the percentage boost that was anticipated only 45 minutes earlier. Fittingly gun forward Riewoldt showed posie to snap a nice goal (coincidentally his first of the day) to seal the deal for the Tigers.

When later that afternoon the feisty Bulldogs toppled an insipid Carlton, the finals dream had been confirmed for the Tigers. But as they entered a new era, their victory spelled a new era for the Lions as well. Few would have predicted that just 4 days later, the Lions would be looking for a new coach.

Like him or hate him, no one can deny that Michael Voss has had a major impact on football in general, and specifically the successful entrenchment of the code in Queensland. He was a champion player who returned to his club to answer a call as coach, and ultimately paid a heavy price. No doubt many Tigers fans would have felt some sympathy for him, given their own clubs record in this regard, had they known it was to be his last game as coach.

Cheers to Streak for stepping up to provide the match report this week.

As he said you could be forgiven for thinking we were in for an 80+ point thumping of the Lions at half time, but to their credit they were able to win the second half with some good contested footy and good shooting for goal. The eventual win, sealed by a boundary side goal from the previously wayward Jack Riewoldt sees the Tigers in September for the first time in 12 years (I just wanted to sound like a real footy commentator).

The voting was very interesting this week, with opinions divided on the best players with 15 players showing up on at least one ballot. In the end it came down to a single vote that separated the winner, Dan Jackson from the runner up Reece Conca. Both played great games, Jackson continuing his stellar late season form to continue to silence his critics and Conca playing some good hard footy and kicking truly for goal (on a day when some of his celebrated teammates struggled in that regard). The solid games of Brandon Ellis, Trent Cotchin and Bachar Houli and Matty White also saw them rack up double figures this week.

The leaderboard is now balanced precariously, with 3 realistic chances for this year's award. Can Dusty hold on, or will Cotchin continue to steamroll through the latter half of the season? Don't count out a late burst from the early leader this season in Brett Deledio. I don't think we've seen such a close finish with only 3 rounds to play.

Our last home game tomorrow sees us take on the under siege Blues, who tamely surrendered to the young Bulldogs last week. They have received some negative media attention this week, so we will need to continue our good form and be on our guard against a fired up opposition. There is not much better than beating the scum, so I look forward to hanging out at the 'G as we continue our journey towards September!
