We arrived at Adelaide Airport on Friday night to the exciting news that Carlton had been beaten by the Hawks. Much jubilation by fellow Tigers convinced us that this was going to be a lucky weekend. We were now ahead of the Blues on the ladder and surely, by the end of Round 14, we would be in the eight! Saturday morning was dry and the sun actually came out before we left for AAMI. Adelaide has an excellent express bus service to the footy and even the Crows supporters welcomed us on board. By the time we arrived at West Lakes, the skies had opened. We waded through water to our seats and looked across the saturated oval. Would Jack be wearing gloves?
We were seated with the Cheer Squad, right behind the goals. One minute the sun was shining and then it would rain. The news that Dan Connors was the ‘Sub’ surprised us all. Wasn’t he good in the wet up in Sydney? But so was Reece Conca!
1st Quarter:
Both teams were slipping and fumbling the ball. We seemed to be over-possessing and indecisive, but Shane Edwards performed some magic for the first goal. Sloane quickly replied for the Crows, followed by an easy Taylor Walker goal. The Tiges were winning at the centre clearances and goals followed to Nahas, Martin and Jack. “We’ve got the BEST Riewoldt in the league,” chanted the Cheer Squad. We were even getting some free kicks despite the one-eyed Crows crowd booing the umpire every time. Titch crumbed and we goaled again. Lids was on fire and drove another one home. A rainbow stretched across the ground and it seemed that the Tiges could do no wrong.
Our excellent goal square view of the tussle between Rance and Walker revealed early signs that Alex might have his hands full. Walker made effective leads and Rance was never really close enough to spoil. He continued to lose his feet or just lunge and scrag Walker. A free to Walker led to the Crows’ third goal and appeased the angry Adelaide crowd.
Fortunately the Crows were making lots of errors and despite some casual kicks and lairizing by the Tigers, we finished the quarter with another two goals from Cotchin and Jack. The Cheer squad were ecstatic and we looked forward to another Tiger goal-fest down our end in the second quarter.
2nd Quarter
Our hopes were dashed quickly as the Crows started getting the centre clearances and kicked three quick goals. They had the momentum. Rutten had been moved on to Elton and Daniel Talia gave Jack no room to move. Jack was double teamed at most contests. The Crows became dominant in the ruck and were prepared to play direct football. Taylor Walker marked again, scoring the Crows’ fourth unanswered goal. Meanwhile, the Tigers were mucking around, playing dumb football and slipping over. Against the flow, a lucky turnover led to Dusty Martin breaking the drought for Richmond followed quickly by a Chris Knights goal.
Jake King had been working hard, but after one of his typical hard contests, he hobbled off the ground and Lids followed with blood streaming out of his eye. It was danger time (29:31), but with the ball heading down to Taylor Walker, we were saved by the siren. Our lead was down to 15 points.
3rd Quarter
This was Jason Porplyzia’s quarter. He was inspirational and too good for Dea, Grimes, Ellis and Morris. The Tiger backline was just too loose. Tippett also started taking strong marks and Walker continued to lead Rance to the ball. The Tigers were looking very shaky. Down the other end, Jack was being held and young, promising Todd Elton was having a tough time against Ben Rutten. The Crows were playing direct football, while we were kicking across the ground and favouring dangerous handballs. Our game plan was just not working!
4th Quarter
With a lead of only six points, the Tiger faithful were quiet. We looked up at the flags and hoped that the breeze would bring us home. Maybe Dimma would make some match winning moves. Unfortunately nothing could save the Tiges. Poor old Steve Morris was thrown head first into the ground and Taylor Walker smugly collected a free and goaled. Adelaide were playing smart, confident football and had all the momentum. Martin and Grigg managed to kick a couple of goals, but we never really looked a threat after that big first quarter.
The bus trip back to Adelaide was a glum affair as we rued what might have been our finest victory. Being devoted Tiger supporters, we will quickly get over the pain and focus on our next challenge against the Demons....yet another “danger match”!

Thanks to happytige for a great report from the ground this week. A disappointing result and a drama-filled week has meant the game against Melbourne, one that was a definite only 7 days ago has taken on a different sheen. I am still confident that we will secure victory, but in a season filled with off- and some real on-field success, we need to ensure that the distractions of the Connors/Martin incident don't lead to a loss that would effectively derail any finals aspirations for this year.
In the voting from the Adelaide fade out, only 42 PREnders cast their ballot, reflecting the disappointment of the game and the fact that it was interstate. The voting this week was dominated by our engine room, with Deledio and Martin very close at the top and Cotchin bringing up the 3rd position. Looking at the stats in this game, it is clear that these guys had a huge influence, but the team as whole were not as cohesive as they needed to be and the Crows were able to gather some momentum and secure the victory.
Let's hope the boys can rally this week and beat the Dees, who will no doubt sense an opportunity and be up for the contests.
Carn' the Tiges!
