MATCH REPORT
by BBC compiled from watching the Foxtel broadcast from home
Match conditions – driving rain and very slippery with the surface greasy
Foxtel Commentary Team – Matt Campbell, Jason Dunstall, Tony Shaw and David King
Richmond started with a “plus one” behind the ball attempting to create a loose man and overlap run and carry.
Notable matchups were:
- GWS playing Tom Scully on Brett Deledio.
- RFC starting Reece Conca as a defensive forward on the Chad (Cornes) eventually rotating Daniel Connors as well.
Conditions made it a scrappy affair with Richmond dominating inside 50’s in the first 10 minutes 7 to 1 before registering a score (a point). We probably should have taken advantage of the possession to be further in front.
Daniel Jackson used his footy nous (often commented on PRE) to register the first goal
Daniel Connors was bright early playing across half forward.
Ivan Maric was effective in giving us the first use of the footy at stoppages as well as dropping a kick behind play, giving nostalgists a flash back to the 1980’s.
Q1 RFC 4.2.26 GWS 2.0.12
GWS made a bright start with the opening 2 goals.
The umpires also made an early impression by awarding a free kick against Jake Batchelor off the ball for the first of these goals. Consistency has become an issue with these free kicks which is as polite as I can be.
This inconsistency continued throughout the quarter with the lowlight being a free against Batchelor for deliberate out of play, 2 minutes after overlooking a more obvious example by Luke Power.
There was a tactical change by the GWS to make it a one on one contest which worked to their favour as they won the quarter.
The forward combination of Patton and Cameron showed how much potential they have. When their young hard bodied midfielders start to click, these two young guns will monster the competition.
Richmond also kicked 2.5 for the quarter starting a trend of wastefulness.
Q2 RFC 6.7.43 GWS 5.1.31
Quarter 3 commenced with Batchelor giving away a soft 50 metre penalty, which resulted in a goal to GWS. Young Jake seems to be one of a number of Tigers looking forward to the break.
After 5 minutes of the third quarter scores were level with memories of the Gold Coast defeat last year flooding back to the supporters and probably the coaching staff.
Fortunately, Jack scored a wonderful goal from the boundary line.
We then added a number of points which was wasteful in the extreme.
With 14 more scoring shots at ¾time to be in front by 18 points told the story of the game.
Q 3 RFC 9.14.68 GWS 8.1.49
The Tiger coaching box was pulling its collective hair out as quarter 4 continued the trend of waste in front of goals.
This was a game that was up for grabs until late in the quarter when two goals from an impressive Daniel Connors saw the Tigers home. The number 19 goes well first up and has done for most of his career. He has talent to burn and should be a regular by now at 24, hopefully he has grown up now.
Shane Edwards, who had been very lively with 2.4 appeared to injure his ankle late in the quarter and hobbled off.
The Fox Commentary team unsuccessfully barracked hard for the home team throughout the last team.
Tony Shaw’s input of “Ahhhhhhhhhhhh”, every time Jeremy Cameron or Jonathan Patton went near the ball gave us a timely reminder of how closely the human composition is to an ape (83 per cent in common I think).
He was a parody of a special comments person. Seriously, subscribers to Foxtel paying approximately $60 a month deserve better.
GWS won the quarter, making it 2 each for the game, but we snuck home by 12 points recording the 4 points but not many highlights.
Dimma’s reaction on the sound of the final siren said plenty. He looked exasperated and annoyed with a very poor display.
Q4 RFC 11.20.86 GWS 12.2.74

Observations
We were poor and would have lost to most other teams in the AFL but we would have definitely lost the game last year.
Thank God Jack Riewoldt played, without him we lose. He is class.
Brandon Ellis must go close to a Rising Star nomination. This boy does not fumble, is hard at the contest and kicks like a mule. He is an absolute ripper.
GWS are a fantastic young team who have two of the best young forwards – Patton and Cameron - in the AFL. They applied a lot of pressure on us which effected our kicking on the day especially in front of goal.

The Tigers went into the bye this week with a second scrappy affair in appalling conditions on the trot. Fortunately we managed to secure the 4 points to keep finals a possibility for 2012.
In the voting this week Tuck was recognised for his tough work in the wet conditions. 29 possessions, 23 of them contested and 6 tackles summed up his contributions. He has been excellent this season and his 4th position in this contest demonstrates. The other votes this week went to Brett Deledio, who I had penciled in for the 3 votes at half time, but was more subdued in the second half. Titch Edwards probably would have secured the best afield if he had converted his opportunities in front of goal. He wasn't alone with his inaccuracy by Tigers on the day, but 2.4 would have looked much nicer as 6.0. He has become a dangerous proposition in front of goal, which is a great string to his bow, adding to his ability to play stints in the midfield and use his creativity by hand around the packs.
The Tigers now have what appears to be a much need rest before taking on the second half of season 2012 and an opportunity to make a finals appearance for the first time since 2001.
